How to choose the right bathroom door. Which door to put in the bathroom: types, materials and standard sizes How to choose the right bathroom door

Bathroom doors are an important element of the interior, which should be organically combined with plumbing fixtures, furniture and cladding. However, the main purpose of the door is still not aesthetic qualities, but its reliability and functionality.

Often among designers and homeowners, disputes arise about which door to put in the bathroom, but there is no definite answer, because much depends on the area of \u200b\u200bthe room, the level of humidity, the quality of ventilation and the design features of the canvas itself.

No matter how stylish and expensive the doors you choose, first of all, they must be moisture resistant, that is, protected from high humidity, hot air and contact with water.

Without a protective coating, natural wood or MDF board deforms: it swells, then shrinks, which is why it becomes covered with cracks and ceases to fulfill its main function.

The effect of moisture and high temperature can be mitigated by installing a bathroom or shower stall on the opposite wall from the door or by erecting an additional partition.

In a spacious room with well-equipped ventilation, you can install a door with any type of design - from processed baguette array to metal-plastic. The humidity level in a large bathroom is not dangerous, and direct water ingress on the door covering is excluded

The most successful for a cramped bathroom are metal-plastic and glass canvases, for a spacious room - any products with a protective layer.

For example, laminate products are covered with a thick synthetic film that does not allow moisture to pass through. So that the appearance does not contradict the general interior solution, they choose a laminate that imitates natural wood.

Let's also look at the different types of doors and try to identify their advantages and disadvantages:

Types of canvases by material of manufacture

Choosing the design of the product, its location, decorative design, rely mainly on the material from which the canvas is made. The texture of wood suggests one type of finish, plastic - another, glass - a third, and the possibilities of each material are far from endless.

For example, it is difficult to place a pvc product in a palace interior, and glass sliding doors in a country-style room.

Budget option - MDF

If you are interested in attractive products of the middle price segment, no doubt purchase MDF doors, which can be easily described in one word - universal.

Manufacturers offer quite interesting models in shades of walnut, wenge and cherry, decorated with glass inserts, for only 2000-2500 rubles. Design proposals, of course, will cost more, however, for a bathroom-toilet couple, standard canvases that do not attract the eye are more often selected, since tiles, furniture and plumbing equipment play the main role.

The most common option from MDF is a blank canvas of baguette or milled type, imitating popular types of wood (oak, ash, walnut, maple) and reinforced with a protective coating

You will be pleased with the relative ease and ease of use of MDF products - they are not as fragile as glass. Due to the natural composition (pressed sawdust and binder lignin) and environmental friendliness, doors are good in homes with a large number of children and animals.

They are moisture resistant, but there is a risk of minimal changes in size during the heating season. The primer and enamel covering their surface increases the resistance to mechanical wear.

Environmentally friendly solid wood

The fashion for natural materials has led to the fact that solid wood doors are becoming more and more in demand among the owners of country cottages and the owners of city apartments.

Wooden products do not need additional decorative finishing - the wood texture has a natural beauty. It is enough to saturate the surface with varnish or special wax, as the soft, porous and pliable wood turns into a durable, waterproof, pest and mold-proof canvas.

Solid wood doors, especially those made of valuable or rare wood, can often be seen in elite houses, the interior of which corresponds to the aristocratic style. The price range is wide - from 20 to 200 thousand rubles

Many do not see much difference in different types of wood - and are deeply mistaken. The color of bleached, with a milky shade of hornbeam or almost black, with the noble waxy shine of bog oak cannot be confused with anything. Alder, like cherry, gives off a light redness, and pine shades represent a whole range - from brown-pink to yellow.

Elegant veneer

Veneer finishing is an appropriate offer as an alternative option for those who value natural beauty and practicality. Veneer is a thin sheet of wood obtained by a special sawing process. For the manufacture of interior doors, sawn material is used, which is the most resistant to mechanical damage.

The use of veneering makes the door structure lighter, makes it more accessible, while the textured features and wood pattern are preserved in their original form.

Special processing of veneer - usually 2-3 layers of varnish - increases the strength of a thin sheet of wood and allows the use of interior doors in kitchens, bathrooms and bathrooms, that is, in rooms with high humidity

Modern methods of wood processing make it possible to produce veneer from various species - beech, apple, oak, poplar, olive. Due to the democratic price, the walnut texture is the most popular, and oak veneer models are distinguished by their durability and wear resistance, therefore their cost is higher.

The versatility of veneered products allows them to harmoniously fit into any design project - they are perfectly combined with sanitary ware and bathroom furniture.

Practical laminate

If you liked laminated doors, be sure to ask what type of film was used in their production. The cheapest products are covered with a layer of cellulose impregnated with synthetic resins. Obviously, a paper "shirt" is absolutely unsuitable for bathroom furnishings.

You should choose models wrapped in polyvinyl chloride elastic film 0.5 mm thick, or even more durable two-sided laminate with a thickness of up to 0.8 mm, more expensive and resembling veneer in appearance.

Caring for door leaves covered with laminate is wiping the film with a damp sponge or piece of cloth (microfiber). You can use a non-aggressive detergent such as laundry soap or bath cleaning gel

For a bathroom with a budget interior, laminated doors are ideal: cheap, easy to install and easy to maintain. If desired, among the monotonous models, you can find options with a curly panel or glass design.

However, it must be remembered that one should not expect an exquisite design from doors of this type, as well as special strength - products with a honeycomb filler are rarely reliable.

Plastic: a variety of choices

Plastic bathroom doors do not have to resemble standard white balcony blocks. Manufacturers offer a variety of options for swing, sliding, folding structures, consisting of plastic, metal-plastic and glass.

If the thickness and structure of the wall allows, you can choose an original modern solution - cassette doors. They do not require additional space for deployment, but are placed in the wall or parallel to it.

White plastic goes well with plumbing equipment and furniture of similar shades and organically fits into the interior in pastel, milky, beige or pearl colors

To save space and money, many people choose the "accordion" - a folding door made of plastic slats. Immediately after installation, you will notice the disadvantages of a device that is convenient at first glance: instability of the structure, large gaps, lack of reliability.

A sliding door on rollers is much more convenient and functional, and with precisely selected dimensions it is not inferior in sound insulation to a conventional swing structure.

Impact resistant glass

Glass systems are not yet as widespread as metal-plastic ones, but their popularity is growing every year. Beautiful, beautifully decorated, durable and completely non-responsive to the effects of water, the doors are made for bathrooms. Glass goes well with faience, porcelain, chrome and gilded fittings.

The safety of glass doors is guaranteed by the use of modern materials: polycarbonate, tempered glass, plexiglass, triplex. It is very difficult to break a product made of the listed materials, and in case of damage, the fragments hang on the sashes or crumble into pieces without sharp corners

How to maintain privacy and deprive glass of its inherent transparency? They recommend several successful methods:

  • gold, silver, color plating;
  • adhesive film coating;
  • drawings and ornaments with stained glass paints;
  • frosted or tinted glass;
  • stained-glass window made of colored glass.

Glass doors are often made to order, so there are no problems with decoration, framing, choice of texture or image. A small minus of glass is the appearance of streaks when condensate accumulates, but you can get rid of this trouble by adjusting ventilation and using ventilation.

Sliding and folding door systems

When it is necessary to save space adjacent to the doorway, or to complete an original design project, they choose not traditional swing doors, but folding and sliding type structures.

The easiest way to install is to mount the overhead system. It includes a door leaf that moves along a guide (metal profile or decorative hanger) along the wall.

Some structures in their functionality resemble the front of the wardrobe: to open the door leaf, it is necessary to move it aside with a slight movement

The design is so simple that many install it on their own, choosing canvases from various materials as doors: wood, MDF board, plastic.

Sliding one-way or two-way system consists of the following parts:

  • 1 or 2 door leaves;
  • guide profile (suspension) installed above the doorway;
  • rollers fixed in the upper end part of the flaps;
  • a stop that does not allow the doors to swing and is located on the floor.

To make a latch, it is necessary to install a stand on the opposite side and adjust the locking mechanism. A variant of sliding systems are cassette in-wall structures, which are great for new buildings, but in old Stalinist, panel and block houses, problems may arise with their installation.

The design, choice of material and external design of sliding doors largely depends on the area of \u200b\u200bthe bathroom and corridor, as well as on design goals. Suppose glass doors visually increase the space of the premises.

Despite the recommendations of experts, some residents choose folding doors and accordion doors. These are two similar options, united by one principle of disclosure. "Accordions" consist of many identical elements, which, when folded, are collected like the bellows of a musical instrument of the same name.

The doors of the "book" consist of two large parts that fold in a certain direction. Using both solutions for bathroom furnishings is extremely impractical, since it is difficult to achieve good sound insulation and reliability. These designs are more suitable for the installation of interior partitions.

The weakest point of folding doors is the hardware that connects the plates and fixes them to the top rail. If there are three or more people in the family, the fasteners will wear out very quickly.

Choice of doors and style solutions

One of the starting points when choosing a door model is the style of the bathroom. It is taken into account in wall cladding, selection of plumbing equipment and furniture, and, of course, it is reflected in the design of door and window openings.

The homeowners' favorite is the classics - noble, elegant, tranquil, perfect for decorating a room for water treatments. It is allowed to use wooden or veneered door leaves in a traditional baguette frame.

The color of doors in a classic interior should intersect with the shade of the surrounding walls, most often these are pastel colors - beige, gray, pearl, golden, pink or light blue

The country style is distinguished by simplicity and deliberate roughness of performance. Doors made of any material: solid wood, MDF, veneer, laminate.

To give the doors a touch of rustic imperfection, they can be aged using special impregnations and paints, as well as by choosing an unpretentious, outdated design

In a minimalist interior, the doors seem to merge with the wall, do not stand out from the general background. The design is the simplest; glass, plastic, moisture-resistant veneer are used for manufacturing.

One of the principles of minimalism is the absence of unnecessary details, which is also manifested in the design of the door leaf, however, it can still be decorated with neat discreet details, for example, frosted glass inserts

The luxurious Art Deco style emphasizes the richness and sophistication of the interior. This is reflected in the overall arrangement of the bathroom and in individual details, including the doors: rare woods are selected for their manufacture, handmade stained glass windows or skillful forged decoration are used.

Unlike minimalism or hi-tech, the art deco style is characterized by pretentiousness, extravagance and eclecticism. Sample door decoration - curly carvings against the background of Venetian plaster and designer tiles

Whatever the doors you choose, the main thing is that they match the interior design and your taste.

One of the tasks that needs to be solved during the renovation is how to choose the doors to the bathroom and toilet. You need to approach this issue with knowledge of the matter, since the requirements for doors for these premises are somewhat different. Let's figure out which material is most appropriate in this case.

Bathroom doors must meet certain requirements

Primary requirements

First of all, consider the basic requirements for the doors leading to the bathroom, they should be focused on the following factors:

  • high humidity;
  • temperature regime;
  • air exchange;
  • soundproofing.

It is these characteristics that will help you decide which doors are best for the bathroom. The environmental conditions in this small room are much harsher than in living rooms, so the material must be strong and durable.

Bathroom door blocks are made of materials that are resistant to high humidity

Constant exposure to water and steam is inevitable in the bathroom. Each time you turn on the water from the sink or bathtub, splashes fly out, and, since the area of \u200b\u200bthe bathroom is usually small, they necessarily fall on the surface of the door. Hot water contributes to the abundant formation of steam, which can adversely affect not only the coating of the canvas, but also its deep structure, in addition, such an environment is very favorable for the growth of bacteria, fungi and mold.

Without special antiseptic impregnation, there is a risk of damage to the product and a real threat to the health of all family members. Temperature changes also have a far from the best effect. Natural materials can dry out and crack, while artificial materials can emit harmful substances when heated, so you need to make sure the quality of the product.

To reduce the intensity of the above factors, it is necessary to provide good ventilation in the room. The doorway is also directly involved in this. Small gaps should remain between the canvas and the box, while large gaps are unacceptable, because a draft and a bathroom are incompatible concepts. The same factor can reduce the soundproofing properties of the door. Providing noise absorption is necessary in order to block the propagation of sounds of water, hairdryer, razor, etc., which may interfere with the rest of the household.

Color and design

When choosing in appearance which doors to put in the bathroom and toilet, you need to take into account the factor that in most houses they are located next to each other, therefore, for the harmony of the interior, it is best to select the same models for both rooms. In general, the product should correspond to the general stylistic idea and be combined not only with interior items and bathroom decoration, but also with corridor elements. Ideally, all doors in an apartment should be in the same style, from the same material and in the same color.

The style of decoration of the bathroom door should correspond to the general decorative mood of the room

In addition, the door leaf should provide complete privacy, that is, it is undesirable to use translucent elements. It is recommended that you install an additional latch-lock so that no one will disturb you while you shower.

One of the most common problems faced by apartment owners is the lack of space. In a small area, every centimeter has its own price, and swing structures take them away.

It is worth considering that sliding and folding systems are not able to provide good sound insulation.

Natural wood

When deciding which door to put in the bathroom, you need to familiarize yourself in more detail with the materials from which they are made. You should start with the most expensive - solid wood. Since we are talking about a bathroom, not every breed will be suitable. It is strictly not allowed to use wood with high levels of hygroscopicity: pine, cherry, sweet cherry. The best option is oak or beech, of the more expensive - mahogany.

Wood must be treated with antiseptic and water-repellent impregnations. It is imperative to varnish the canvas. The more processing layers, the higher the resistance values. But in any case, the coating wears out over time, and under the influence of unfavorable conditions, the tree dries up and may crack.

Coated doors

What other material can be used to put a door to a bathroom or toilet? Standard canvases are made of fiberboard or MDF. In order to prevent the main material from swelling under the influence of moisture, it is lined with durable wear-resistant coatings. Speaking specifically about the bathroom, PVC cladding would be an ideal option. It is imperative to make sure that the edge is well finished so that moisture does not get under the coating. Quite a good option -.

Glass + MDF with a special moisture-resistant coating is an excellent solution for a bathroom

For those who want to purchase a product with a woody pattern, veneer can be considered. But since veneer is natural wood, and it does not like moisture, it is better to give preference to its artificial substitute - eco-veneer. In appearance, it practically does not differ from natural, but indicators of such characteristics as moisture resistance, hygiene and wear resistance are much higher.

Regardless of the type of facing of the canvas, it is necessary to check the quality of its fit, the degree of processing and the presence of an additional protective moisture-repellent coating. During operation, the owners often face the problem of web stratification. If the integrity of the coating is violated, the service life of such a door in conditions like in a bathroom will be short-lived.

Plastic

What kind of door can be put into the bathroom so as not to worry about its condition? For rooms with high humidity, a metal-plastic structure would be an ideal and relatively inexpensive option. Of course, not every model will fit into the interior of an apartment, but such material is absolutely not afraid of water and steam, is not affected by fungus and mold, and besides, it is easy to care for it.

Plastic door in the bathroom - convenient, practical and stylish

Today manufacturers offer a wide range of plastic doors. Now you can order not only a standard white canvas, but also color variations or imitation of various materials, including wood or leather, however, the price of such models will be higher.

Which one is better to choose a door for a bathroom or toilet, everyone decides for himself, but in addition to the specified characteristics, the choice will be based on the available budget.

Reading time ≈ 21 minutes

Classic painted bathroom door

Approximately 80% of the production of interior doors is associated with wood processing. Previously, this figure was close to 100%, because alternative options, such as plastic and glass, came into our everyday life relatively recently.

So - wood, plastic, glass ... If you distribute materials according to hygroscopicity and, accordingly, moisture resistance, wood will go to the last place. Nevertheless, the production of interior doors is not transferred to a polymer-glass base, because a door in a house is also strength, beauty, warmth and silence.

Since in terms of other indicators, wood wins over the "allies", it is the No. 1 material in the production of interior doors, including those installed at the entrance to the bathroom and toilet. So that a model costing 10-20 thousand rubles or more does not crack, does not stop closing after a couple of months, people have come up with effective ways to protect products from moisture and condensation.

Eco-veneer door in the bathroom

The question of how to choose a door to the bathroom and toilet remains relevant. People want to know they are paying for a quality product. How to choose a door to a room with a constantly changing temperature and humidity background? What materials are used in production, how they create protection from moisture, select fittings - you will know the answers to these and other questions after reading our article.

All terms of operation and technical characteristics given in this article refer only to quality products. Materials for this article were prepared by experts store of interior doors "In the House".

Why do doors warp due to moisture

Different types of wood absorb and release moisture to one degree or another. This does not always happen, but under the condition that the air humidity in the surrounding atmosphere is greater or less than the moisture content of wood. When the moisture content falls below 30% (crosses the lower fiber saturation threshold), the volume of the wood pulp will decrease. Individual parts of the rock change shape, shrinkage, expansion of some parts, cracking of others occurs. These and other phenomena in professional slang are called wood warping.

White bathroom door

Unfortunately, deformation can happen with a live and cut down tree that has been processed. Why does wood warp when it is already being used in the form of an interior door? There are 2 explanations for this:

  • The manufacturer decided to save money and used not dried wood;
  • The type of wood, covering materials or protection technology was chosen incorrectly, therefore the door is sensitive to changes in humidity in the bathroom (cracks, increases or decreases in size, etc.).

Both cases are the result of non-compliance with production technology and are a factory defect. It is difficult to detect the tendency of a door to warp at the purchase stage. To protect yourself from purchasing a low-quality product, work with trusted manufacturers and choose doors made of moisture-resistant materials.

What materials are not afraid of high humidity doors?

The build quality, fittings, color, decor are characteristics that are always important, regardless of the expected operating conditions. When choosing a door to a bathroom, a bathroom (including if they are combined), other qualities are of primary importance. The resistance of the structure to humidity and temperatures directly depends on them.

Wenge eco-veneer interior door in the bathroom

So, the door to the bathroom should be chosen taking into account the constantly changing environmental conditions. Even a family of three adults takes a shower at least three times a day. Add to this washing, wet cleaning, the direct effect of water on the structure when it is located close to the sink. It turns out that the humidity in the bathroom "walks" 24 hours a day.

You can avoid negative consequences if:

  • Order doors from a manufacturer with a good reputation. You will be confident that the doors are made from well-dried high grade raw materials;
  • The door is made of moisture resistant wood;
  • Used high-quality depth and surface protection with materials with high barrier functions.

We propose to talk about suitable materials for bathroom doors and types of protection further.

What kind of wood is the most moisture resistant

The list of wood with the highest moisture resistance is headed by exotic species. The costs of transporting and handling such varieties significantly increase the final price, therefore doors from ulin, merabu, balau and other varieties are rarely found in the product line of enterprises. It is believed that “native” timber is more suitable for operation in a certain climatic zone. In Russia, these are oak, ash, beech, alder, pine. Each of the listed varieties has its own attitude to changeable humidity.

Bathroom door made of painted solid alder

Oak

A sound breed ranging in shades from deep red to light yellow. Oak is in demand among manufacturers of doors, including entrance, furniture, flooring, construction, design due to its high strength, hardness, resistance to decay.

The breed has a beautiful texture and pattern. Oak is often used in bathroom doors. Provides unlimited possibilities for the use of labor-intensive decor techniques as well as making natural veneers.

Ash

Another member of the heart family with brownish wood. Possesses high strength, moisture resistance. Due to its inherent toughness and flexibility, it is easy to process. They are widely used in carpentry - in the production of parquet, furniture, decoration materials, stairs, railings, interior doors. Installation of models in the bathroom is allowed provided that they are carefully treated with enamels and varnish.

Beech

He is loved for its naturalness and pleasant shade, although many consider it boring and expressionless. Mainly used for the manufacture of parquet. Relatively high strength at low cost are the main advantages of the breed.

Beech is extremely susceptible to moisture. Untreated material quickly cracks and swells. They are rarely used in the manufacture of bathroom doors: only if multi-stage protection is used - deep and external.

Alder

Swampy breed. To maintain the moisture balance, excess moisture is removed through the bark. The composition contains a lot of tannins. Possesses favorable physical properties for the use of wood in the decoration of saunas, baths, for the production of drainage systems, doors to the bathroom for finishing with veneer or for painting.

Pine door with translucent white wax coating for the bathroom

Pine

The wood is soft, careful handling is required to avoid chipping and other defects. The pine species is easily recognizable by its beautiful woody pattern and pleasant resinous aroma, which persists even after varnishing. Colorless protective compounds are used more often so as not to disturb the natural beauty. They are used in the production of bathroom doors in a low price segment.

The moisture resistance of the base, of course, is taken into account when choosing raw materials for the production of interior doors. Nevertheless, primary importance is given to the technological processing and characteristics of the finishing coatings, which have both decorative and protective properties. Laminated bathroom doors

  • Laminate;
  • Eco-veneer.

Door with an eco-veneer covering installed in the bathroom

Laminate coated bathroom doors are the cheapest. They are made from solid pine (sometimes from chipboard). Laminate with cellulose-based material. Economy class doors, if they are suitable for installation in rooms with a constantly changing humidity background, then as a temporary option. In an atmosphere of jumping humidity and temperature, under the influence of condensation, the laminate will become unusable in 2-3 years and cease to perform a protective function. The service life of structures can be extended by creating good ventilation, by installing a powerful heated towel rail, possibly by heating the lower air masses with a "warm floor" system.

PVC coated doors

Films cover doors sheathed with veneered MDF, or structures made of inexpensive solid wood. The polymer is applied in special chambers. To achieve 100% tight closure and exclude the formation of seams, each part of the future structure is covered with a film separately. After that, the "dressed" frame and panels (or tsars) are connected to each other. A high-quality PVC door does not have butt joints on the surface, including on the edges. It reliably protects the wood from moisture, and also makes the door durable, beautiful appearance.

Snow-white doors with PVC trim in the bathroom

All PVC doors are in approximately the same price range. It is not advisable to use the film to cover an expensive array. As a rule, these are doors made of softwood or composite MDF. To enhance the heat-saving, sound-insulating characteristics of the canvas, an inexpensive and lightweight honeycomb filler is put inside.

Eco-veneer coated doors

The name of the material misleads buyers. Eco-veneer has nothing to do with natural veneer, but only looks like it. In fact, it is a thin film (up to 0.5 mm thick) based on polypropylene, ideally imitating the structure and color of natural wood. For the price, such doors are approximately on the same level with PVC models. The minimum thickness makes the material very flexible, so it neatly wraps around all structural elements, including 90-degree end connections, shaped inserts, etc. The polymer does not allow moisture to pass through. Eco-veneer doors are suitable for installation in a bathroom, kitchen.

Prefabricated eco-veneer door in the bathroom

Bathroom doors covered with natural veneer

Natural veneer - the same solid wood, only transformed into a thin film. The material has the same properties as the wood from which it is made. It perfectly absorbs moisture and quickly deteriorates if appropriate protection measures are not taken.

Natural veneer does not have the flexibility of PVC and PP films. To apply it to structural elements, a different technology is used (hot pressing method). It is important to achieve a strong adhesion of the film over the entire surface, especially at the edges. To protect the door from a negative environment, several layers of varnish are applied over the veneer.

Veneered bathroom door in white ash

Doors made of natural veneer are more expensive than models with film coverings and require more careful handling. After several stages of varnishing, the surface retains the noble color of natural wood, and also acquires mechanical strength and moisture resistance.

Solid wood doors to the bathroom

The most expensive and beautiful interior doors. The conditions for installation in the bathroom are the same - it is important to choose the right means for long-term protection and correctly place the technical clearances during the installation process.

To fight humidity more effectively, provide room ventilation (if natural exhaust is not enough, install forced ventilation with automatic humidity control), an electric heated towel rail (power is calculated taking into account the area of \u200b\u200bthe room) and a "warm floor" system.

Decorating and protecting a door made of natural wood from moisture and mechanical damage is carried out using enamels. Manufacturers have at their disposal a huge arsenal of colors in order to be able to choose a tone that matches the color of parquet, baseboards, etc.

Is it possible to strengthen the protection of the structure from moisture at home

In order not to ask this question, we advise you to immediately choose a door with a moisture-resistant coating. Usually, manufacturers select and apply formulations in compliance with SNiPs and GOSTs established for certain types of goods. A person who does not have knowledge in this area can harm the product. For example, not everyone knows that when recoating paintwork materials, you should choose a composition that does not dissolve the previous layer, i.e., it will be made on less aggressive solvents. To do this, you need to know which tool the manufacturer used. And there are several such nuances.

At home, you can spoil the existing protection and make the door even more vulnerable. If additional protection is very important for you, try to paint the places where hinges, locks and handles are cut with a colorless varnish, as well as to walk with the tool along the top and bottom ends, because these are usually the places that remain untreated. For work, it is better to use a water-soluble varnish.

Bathroom door dimensions: what to do if the opening is non-standard?

They try to adjust the dimensions of doorways to the bathroom, as well as to other rooms in the apartment, to standard parameters. Most manufacturers supply products with heights of 190 and 200 cm to the market.The width can vary from 60 to 100 cm.In old buildings, an opening 60 cm wide is used. furniture, jacuzzi and other volumetric equipment.

If the parameters of the doorways did not go beyond the specified centimeters, the problem with the choice would not be so acute. After all, you can always compensate for a few millimeters using polyurethane foam or telescopic extensions. It's another matter if the discrepancy is 10 cm or more.When it comes to a very high or wide door, you have to act differently:

  • Find a manufacturer who works with a wide range of doors: we are talking about a factory in which high, wide leaves are put on stream, and are produced along with standard designs, even if in a slightly smaller quantity;
  • Create an individual order.

Of the three options for the production of interior doors, the last one, which involves production according to an individual sketch, is the most expensive and time-consuming. In order not to overpay, try to find a company that produces models of the size you need.

Or you can go the other way ...

Not a door under the opening, but an opening under the door

The option is laborious, but it will solve the problem of finding an interior door once and for all. We offer:

  • Expand (narrow) the opening;
  • Install the transom to match the height standards.

The recommendation to reduce the leaf height by a few millimeters is only suitable for solid wood doors (not covered with foil). In this case, accuracy is important, otherwise the decorative layer can be damaged. After trimming, the end side must be varnished, painted.

Do not cut MDF doors and hollow structures. By cutting off at least a couple of millimeters, you open up moisture to the inner layers. Such a door will swell very quickly.

Another tip - it can come in handy when performing redevelopment. For example, you decide to give under bathroomanother room with a wide double-leaf door at the entrance. If this option does not suit you, use a wide opening for installing the sliding system - beautiful, modern and economical.

You can add a little width using an additional strip. There is a special groove for its installation in modern structures.

An equally important parameter that affects the performance of the model is the thickness of the box. Everything is logical here - the thinner the material, the more it is sensitive to moisture.

In practice, the operation of a box that is too thin is as follows (an example from life): the box of the door to the bathroom will swell several times a day and return to its normal state. This happens due to a flaw of the installers, when an insufficient amount of polyurethane foam is placed in the groove. If you leave the assembly seam unprocessed (it would be correct to seal it with tile glue), moisture will freely penetrate deep into the box. To prevent such incidents when installing MDF doors, try prophylaxis: we advise you to walk with paint on the inner surface of the box. One layer will be enough.

Is it possible to put a bathroom door with glass

There are 3 situations when you should refuse a bathroom door with glass inserts:

  1. The exit to the bathroom is in the common corridor, where blind structures have already been installed at the entrance to the living room, to the kitchen, and to other rooms.
  2. The interior design uses the loft style, minimalism, and the canvas with glass does not fit into the concept.
  3. The entrance to the bathroom is arranged through the bedroom, and the burning light will interfere with the rest of other family members.

Bathroom door with large glass and painted ash veneer

For inserts, a multi-layer triplex is used - matte or tinted. There is no need to worry about the safety of the structure. To break such glass, you will need to make more than one blow with a hammer. A polymer film is used as an interlayer between glasses. It holds the triplex on impact, prevents it from turning into fragments and scattering on the floor.

Of course, triplex is not influenced by high humidity and temperatures. A door with glass will be useful to scattered people. You will remember to turn off the bathroom light every time you leave.

How glass is attached

In order for the glass to sit firmly inside the frame, a sealant is placed along the edges. It is better to use silicone with a special groove where the glass is inserted. In order for the silicone to slide over the surface, it is moistened in water, and then pulled onto the ends. A kind of vacuum connection is formed, very tear-resistant.

If the seal does not have a groove, the attachment is made with silicone glue. You can check how tightly the glass "sits" in the niche by closing and opening the door several times. If the connection is good, you will not hear knocks or other extraneous sounds.

Bathroom door fittings - hinges, handles, screws

Bathroom door fittings must be resistant to corrosion, so choose hinges, locks and handles made of brass or stainless steel, coated with a layer of nickel and chrome. Brass models are more durable and more expensive. Steel components are processed by galvanizing. A strong protective film forms on the surface, which protects the metal from corrosion. Such materials are not afraid of either high humidity or direct contact with water, therefore they are often used in the manufacture of mixers.

Bathroom door with wrap and magnetic catch

By design, the hinges can be of two types:

  • Overhead;
  • Mortise.

Overhead models are attached to self-tapping screws to the end sides of the canvas and box. Such structures are one-piece. To make repairs, you will have to unscrew the hinges to remove the canvas.

To install mortise loops, grooves of the same size are made on the end sides of the structure. Loops are inserted into them, after which they are attached to self-tapping screws. These hinges are more expensive. Their installation requires more time and work with a special tool. Mortise elements create a more stable fastening of the canvas, therefore, they are more effective when hanging heavy solid wood structures.

Three-piece painted bathroom door with wrap

A kind of mortise fittings - hidden hinges. Their advantages:

  • Beautiful design - they are more compact, available in a wide range of shades, you can choose the mechanism for handles and locks for gold, silver, bronze, antique silver, stainless steel and other materials;
  • Easy adjustment: there are several screws on the hinges. Each performs its own function. It is enough to twist the desired one to adjust the position of the canvas vertically, horizontally;
  • Concealed installation: the hinges remain invisible when the door is open and closed.

From the rich assortment of handles and locks for the bathroom, three models are more suitable:

  • Conventional bolt: quick to install, no hole required, little cost;
  • Knob handle: A ball-shaped handle that flushes out the latch when placed vertically. It will be impossible to open the door from the outside;
  • Plumbing wrap: works like a regular mortise lock, only a simplified version. It costs a little more than a latch. The cut is made in one hole made with a drill.

Entrance door to the bathroom - needed or not

The presence of a sill at the entrance to the bathroom is enshrined in rules supplementing SNiP 2.03.13-88 and 3.04.01-87. It is assumed that the difference in height will be able to prevent the spread of water through the apartment for a short time if flooding occurs.

Bathroom door with threshold

There are two ways to install the nut:

  • The floors in the bathroom and in the adjoining room are at the same level, between them there is a barrier at least 2 cm high;
  • The floor in the adjoining interior is higher. At the entrance to the bathroom, a step is formed - the so-called bath-trough.

The device of the nut is a private matter of the owner. Its presence will give at least 15-20 minutes of head start to notice flooding and turn off the water. If, nevertheless, the stream has time to rush overboard, you risk ruining your floor covering, but you will not have time to flood your neighbors.

What is the most convenient way to open the bathroom door

All doors can be divided into 3 groups according to the type of opening:

  • Swing;
  • Sliding: on a roller mechanism, "in a pencil case", folding (accordion, book);
  • Mixed: rotodover.

The opening method at the bathroom door can be any. The main thing is that the model does not create inconvenience when opened, it was installed on a high quality mechanism that does not lend itself to moisture.

Swing

According to the current SNiP, the swing door to the bathroom must open outward. It is easier to open or push out in case of fire. If suddenly a person in the bathroom becomes ill, if he falls, he will not lock the door, and help will be provided faster.

Just match the opening option (left / right) with other doors nearby and choose a method that will not interfere with opening all at once.

Sliding bathroom door

Sliding (on a roller mechanism, "in a pencil case")

Installation of the system on a roller mechanism is reduced to fastening the guides in the upper and lower parts of the opening, followed by hanging the canvas. Such designs are called overhead. To save money on updating the door, you can buy only the mechanism and install the leaf from the swing door.

Installation of the lock will take a little more time. For the insert, it is necessary to make a separate wooden rail, make a slot in it and fix it on the wall, where, in fact, the narthex should be located. When closed, the canvas with the lock will enter the structure with a slot and snap into place.

The system called "in a pencil case" is a cassette unit with a finished door and a false wall. Neither the left nor the right will require additional free space where the canvas will roll out. Opening, the door enters the niche, and the mechanism itself remains invisible from the outside.

The system is delivered to the customer fully assembled, ready for installation. Disadvantages of the cassette model:

  • Expensive fittings;
  • Professional installation is required, which also costs a lot;
  • Suitable for apartments and houses where it is possible to remove part of the wall near the doorway. If the entrance to the bathroom is surrounded by other doors, installation is not possible.

Folding door (book, accordion)

The names of the models were assigned by analogy with the corresponding items. They are similar to each other, only in the "book" there are only 2 folding panels, and in the "accordion" there are 3 or more.

Both do not require free space in front of the opening to open. The flaps slide to the side and remain inside the box. The canvas does not slide along the adjacent wall, so it can be decorated with paintings, vases and other accessories. The downside of folding doors is that when open, they reduce the opening by the amount of folded leaves. Perhaps it is better to refuse overall furniture and plumbing, or you will have to remove the canvas during unloading.

Rotodoor

The model looks stylish. A mixed type of opening is used: the leaf swings open and at the same time moves to the side. One half of the door remains on the territory of the bathroom, the other goes into the adjacent interior.

A sophisticated rotary mechanism ensures smooth, quiet opening. Installation can be carried out in an opening of any size. The magnetic lock prevents self-opening. To open the door, you need to push it away from you, from which side you enter.

When choosing a bathroom door, be guided by the control parameters, which are usually used to test the quality of all interior models. Measure diagonally. The error should not exceed 2 mm, otherwise a slight misalignment can very quickly develop into a noticeable deformation.

After installation, check with a building level how even the door "sits" horizontally and vertically. Open the canvas about halfway. With a good installation, it should stay in place. Examine the coating carefully again. Often the inaccurate use of piercing, cutting tools ends with a peeled and hastily rubbed PVC film or chipped enamel, and this is a sufficient reason not to pay for the work until errors are eliminated.

The proposed video will help when installing the door with your own hands.

When choosing a door to the bathroom, several important points are taken into account. Wooden canvas is afraid of moisture, but this drawback is solved by applying antiseptic impregnation or varnish. Glass is appropriate in any interior, it is not afraid of moisture and temperature changes. Plastic doors are durable, practical, are cheap, are not afraid of exposure to detergents, but they are not suitable for every interior. When buying a door, it is worth choosing canvases (if the interior does not require otherwise), since scratches or chips are not so noticeable on them.

Previously, high thresholds were made in bathrooms so that in the event of an overflow of water, it would not enter the room and spoil the decor. But this decision is not suitable if the family has small children and elderly people. Now the market offers special devices that prevent water overflow, as well as automatic systems that turn off the water supply system in case of occurrence.
