The history of the Italian company Meritalia dates back to 1987. Its founder was the talented entrepreneur Giulio Enrico Meroni, who opened his own small enterprise for the manufacture of original designer furniture. Today Meritalia is a large industrial company with four factories and its own design bureau. Famous designers such as Gaetano Pesce, Dante Benini, Tobia Scarp, Massimo Adami, Mario Bellini and many others have made a huge contribution to the success of the products.

Simple lines, glossy and transparent surfaces, an abundance of light and designer furniture. In this project, everything is based on the principle of through motion of space, which flows freely through translucent partitions and dissolves into the environment. The purity of forms and minimalism are dotted with bright accents: an ironic picture, an unusual chair or an optical illusion.

High quality workmanship, noble materials, comfort, reliability of invisible fixings - all this makes Italian beds desirable in any bedroom. Fans of modern style will appreciate the purity of the lines, along with the unusual design and functionality. Lovers of the classics will find exquisite models, decorated with carvings, hand-made upholstery and finishing details.

In any bedroom, the bed is not only the main piece of furniture, but also the focal point of the space. It is around the bed that the whole concept of the design of the room for sleep and rest is built. The interior of the room depends to a large extent on how the bed will look, and our well-being, the quality of sleep, and hence the state of health directly depends on how it performs its functionality. A healthy, sound sleep will help ensure a stop in the bedroom - a calm neutral palette, pleasant textiles, comfortable and high-quality furniture. This publication will focus on the acquisition of the central element of bedroom furniture.

Considering that we spend a third of our lives in a dream, it is necessary to approach the choice of the main subject to ensure a sound and deep sleep with all seriousness. You can save money on other pieces of furniture, decor and even decoration of the room, but for a good rest you need a good bed. Let's talk in more detail about what are the criteria for choosing a berth.

Bed design - features of choice

Bed frame

Simply put, the bed structure consists of a frame and a base on which the mattress is installed. Conventionally, all existing frameworks can be divided into two types:

  1. The frame consists of two supporting backs and two drawers (panels)
  2. As part of the frame, four drawers and hinged backs can be distinguished. There can be two such backs or only one (headboard)

If the bed is designed according to the second type of frame, then, as a rule, it is located on four legs (sometimes castors, side walls, additional structures such as a podium or platform can act as them).

Which of the options you prefer is up to you. In fact, the design features of the bed are not as important as the manufacturer, material and conscientiousness of workmanship. If we talk about statistics, the legs of the beds break more often than the backs, but this is not an absolute.

In addition to the design, the material from which the bed frame is made is of great importance. Sleeping places made of metal and solid wood are the most reliable and durable option.

Beds made of MDF and fiberboard show themselves less reliable. The most common problems with such structures are cracks in the attachment points, due to which furniture looses and begins to creak. If the frame of the berth is made of chipboard, then such troubles during operation will arise even earlier. Chipboard beds are the cheapest, but such pieces of furniture will not last long.

Bed base

The bed frame is responsible for the solidity of the supporting structure, but the quality of your sleep will directly depend on the choice of the base and mattress. The base can be called a frame or lattice, which is attached to the bed frame and serves as a support for the mattress (the choice of which is a question for a separate publication). The bed frame can be made of metal, wood or chipboard. Lamellas are installed on the frame (sometimes they are called armor), which are made of wood or plastic - these structural elements must bend. There should be as many slats as possible, the service life of the bed directly depends on their number. The distance between the slats should not exceed the width of the slats themselves. For a double bed, the number of slats equal to 30 is considered normal (but more is better), for a single bed for sleeping, it is, respectively, two times less.

Among the design features of the beds, the existence of models with a lifting base (gas-lift mechanism) should also be noted. Rising gently, the base provides access to the spacious storage system created by the bed frame. The large drawer can be used to store seasonal blankets or extra bedding sets. But such mechanisms also have disadvantages - the base of the bed in this case is not ventilated, which means that the lower part of the mattress also loses air.

Similar ventilation problems occur with beds with drawers located at the bottom of the bed structure. Choosing beds with lifters or drawers only makes sense if there is a real shortage of storage space. Otherwise, it's better to ditch additional storage systems in favor of a much longer mattress life.

Headboards

Beds without a headboard are rare in modern interiors, because without this important attribute, a place to sleep is quite inconvenient. An exception is the option when the bed is installed against the wall, which is decorated with soft textile panels.

The back-headboard acts not only as a support for the resting person on the bed, but also serves for relaxation. This bed element is essential for those who like to read before going to bed or watch TV. From glasses of Feng Shui, the headboard is necessary for a sense of security for those who are lying in bed or reclining reading a book. This attribute of the central piece of furniture in any bedroom lends a sense of calm and reliability.

Wrought iron and slatted headboards aren't comfortable enough for bed-readers, but an extra set of flat pillows will help solve this problem.

Choosing a bed to your liking and to the interior of the room

Upholstered beds

The modern trend in bed design suggests that it is not just a piece of furniture for sleeping and relaxation, but also a beautiful, practical and at the same time safe object of your furniture. Upholstered beds have become popular precisely because of the presence of all of the above qualities.

Not only families with small children who run into the parent's bedroom, knocking over all the corners, love such pieces of furniture. A bed with an upholstery around the entire perimeter looks presentable, as if it invites the owner to plunge into the soft embrace of sleep and relaxation.

For children's bedrooms and rooms for teenagers, soft beds can become not only a safe piece of furniture, but also an interior decoration, bright upholstery of the bed can become an accent in design, highlight this already important piece of furniture.

As a rule, PPU filler is hidden under the bed upholstery - it is harmless and hypoallergenic. The lush upholstery of the double bed not only gives the piece of furniture itself a more luxurious look, but also transforms the entire design of the bedroom, making it more impressive and respectable.

Wrought iron beds in a modern interior

Now it is difficult to say exactly when exactly the first forged products appeared. Despite the abundance of materials for making furniture, metal beds are popular to this day. Having come a long way in tens of centuries, forging has become a multifaceted and skillful way to make not only a strong and durable piece of furniture, but also a real decoration of a modern interior.

Even such solid and impressive pieces of furniture as double beds can look airy, weightless, thanks to the skillful execution of forged details. The variety of possibilities in the craft of forging allows you to find the right bed model for a variety of interior styles - from classic to modern.

Rustic interior, or country style, successfully transfers the integration of wrought-iron furniture. A metal bed painted in white will harmoniously look both in Provence style and in a room decorated in a shabby chic style.

The classic solid wood bed is always in trend

No matter how much time has passed, no matter what new materials appear for the manufacture of furniture, solid wood will remain popular, in demand and one of the most reliable materials. A bed made of solid wood is itself a decoration of the room, and if the appropriate setting is selected for it, the bedroom becomes a cult place in the house.

It is difficult to imagine a classic interior without a massive wooden bed, with carved legs and a headboard decorated with carvings. A central piece of bedroom furniture made of solid wood will not only be a harmonious and sustainable decoration for your interior, but will also be an excellent investment for years to come.

A bed made of natural wood can become a focal point not only for a classic bedroom. Wooden products without excessive decor are very successfully integrated into the modern interior.

Usually a bed made of wood is not painted, but covered with protective varnishes to demonstrate the natural shade of the material. But there are also bed models made of wood and painted in a bright color. Such a colorful coloring of the bed allows it to become the focal center of the bedroom, to capture the full attention of anyone entering the room.

Four-poster bed - forgotten traditions in a modern interior

In ancient times, the canopy was invented as a means of keeping warm - it was made of dense fabric and in most cases had a thick lining. The canopy was mounted on four slats, which could be wooden or metal. Nowadays, the canopy plays a more decorative role, it is made of thin, airy fabrics, as a rule, tulle textiles.

According to the configuration, beds with the possibility of using a canopy come with slats that are attached to the bed frame and an integral structure of a berth located on a platform or base, to which the slats supporting the canopy are mounted.

In a modern bedroom interior, a bed model with slats for installing a canopy in the absence of the latter can be harmoniously applied. Tall posts designed to support textiles can simply be part of the bed's decor, design features.

Hanging beds - a new word in bedroom design

The fashion for hanging beds came to us from the Asian island countries, where such pieces of furniture are the usual entourage of bungalows and oceanfront villas intended for relaxation. In warm countries, hanging beds can be installed on an outdoor terrace or under a canopy for a relaxing outdoor seating. In fact, even the slightest movement of the bed leads to a measured slight wiggle that can lull even people with insomnia.

Hanging beds are either double or single, rectangular or round, with or without sides. Most often there are rectangular massive bases with a sufficiently high mattress laid on it. The base of the bed is fastened with four chains or thick jute ropes to the ceiling (with anchors). The bed is installed, or rather suspended in the center of the room or closer to one of the walls, but not close (you must leave a margin in the distance to the walls and other furniture for swinging).

In some interiors, an imitation of a suspended bed is used. The product actually stands on legs that are hidden in the depths and therefore it seems that the bed is hanging. Some models are mounted on one side of the wall, and the other end is suspended from the ceiling. The installation of any model of a hanging bed (except for imitation) requires serious calculations - not every ceiling is able to support the weight of the bed together with people lying on it or one person.

Beds with a ledge at the base

Such models are very convenient in terms of the correct operation of the bed. Sitting down on the firm ledge of the base of your bed, you save the mattress from constant local loads (which inevitably occur when landing on the mattress) and extend its service life. Considering that orthopedic mattresses often cost more than the bed itself, this aspect can be a key consideration when choosing a bed model.

Even if your bed is the simplest model, you can focus on the central and most important piece of furniture in the sleeping and relaxation room using a creative approach to the design of the headboard. For example, with the help of textiles, you can implement many options for decorating the head of a bed - from a soft wall to labrequins made of fabric that was used to decorate window openings.

A country or ethno-style bedroom will be decorated with a headboard made of almost untreated wood. Chipped boards or logs with wormholes will add brutality to the room, even some primitive rusticity.

A painted wooden headboard, as if it was aged, can also bring an element of surprise to the bedroom interior, but also make it more unique and personalized.

A colorful panel or colorful artwork can not only draw attention to the area where the bed is located, but also diversify the color palette of the bedroom.

Branches of trees, trunks, bark and much more are used by modern designers to embody their thoughts and fantasies in the field of decorating beds. You will not have to doubt the originality of not only your bed, but the entire interior, by purchasing a designer model of a bed, decorated with a special, individual style.

In fact, very practical decorative elements can be used to decorate the space at the head of the bed - open shelves, small shelves and storage niches, lighting and wall lamps can be used not only as part of the lighting system, but decorative items or even art objects.

And finally, a few practical tips for choosing a bed in accordance with its size:

  • if you purchase a bed in a finished bedroom interior, then exactly measure the area of \u200b\u200bspace that is allocated for it;
  • if it is indicated on the package or the price tag of the bed that the size is "standard" - check the parameters with the consultant;
  • it is better to independently verify the size of the product, often the price lists indicate only the dimensions of the bed, and not the bed itself;
  • choose the largest size that your bedroom can accommodate (standard bed sizes in double beds are 160, 180 and 200 cm);
  • when considering options for bed sizes, do not forget about the length - a size 15 cm higher than the height of the person who will sleep on the bed is considered ideal and sufficient;
  • the height of the bed above the floor is also of great importance, ideally if the mattress of the bed reaches up to the knee of the person standing next to it (the latest fashion trends in the area of \u200b\u200bbeds tend to low models, but they are not suitable for older people - the older the person, the higher his sleeping area should be a place).

Beds in a modern interior - lots of inspiring ideas

For a bedroom, this is an important and responsible process, because the bed should be not only spectacular and stylish, but also comfortable. The well-being and vigor of a person depends on how calm the sleep will be. The ideal material for such furniture is wood, which is environmentally friendly and safe for humans.

Wooden beds: what is good about natural material

More and more often, furniture from natural materials appears in designer interiors, and the designers themselves advocate a return to wood in everything: from couches to wardrobes. In addition, it can be supplemented with many functional little things: drawers for linen, a space-saving lifting mechanism, functional bedside tables or shelves.

  • The modern wooden bed is a great combination of simplicity and functionality. The wood is processed additionally, the corners are smoothed, and the joints are made invisibly. Such a double bed fits perfectly into minimalistic, and in a modern interior. Laconicism and austerity are what distinguishes these beds.

What to consider when using a wooden bed

Care and proper care of a wooden bed guarantees a long life, so it is extremely important to follow the recommendations and keep your bed in ideal conditions.

  • The room in which the wooden product stands should not be too cold, and the maximum humidity is 50-70%.
  • Air conditioners, heaters and radiators should not be close to the bed.
  • Direct contact with water can be fatal for a wooden bed: the tree will dry out and crack.
