How to make a fence from branches. Do-it-yourself wicker fence: how to make a wicker fence. How to make wattle: preparatory stage

To understand how to make wattle with your own hands, you need to understand this process in detail. This seemingly simple question has its own nuances and peculiarities. Do-it-yourself wattle at the dacha for a long time does not fulfill the protective function for which it was intended a century ago in the countryside. But as a decorative and auxiliary building is still in demand.

Beautiful wattle from branches

It is readily used by garden interior designers. Lovers of hand-made structures are used for zoning the territory or fencing creeping climbing plants.

Wickerwork in the imagination of many urbanists is a fragile, low wattle fence, not very presentable, built in haste. But this view is not true. The modern variety of building materials allows you to make a braid from branches treated with special tools, wooden slats, poles, thin long branches, even from a polyvinyl chloride rod or strips.

The folk experience gained over the centuries allows for sectional weaving, with a gap left between the canvases. If you use the continuous weaving technique, then it requires additional fastening, uniform distribution of joints.

Really creating a solid fence, if you use special materials. You can make a fence that is not inferior in height and strength to a brick, weave a low fence for a flower bed with your own hands, so that children and pets do not break the fragile stems of the planted plants. You can weave the fence in width or in height (horizontal and vertical weaving).

Powerful wicker fence

Each of the species has not only advantages and disadvantages, but also its intended purpose.

The classic horizontal weaving can be done in an inclined way. Then the inherent impression of infinity will be even more decorative and will give an additional unusual look when breaking down flower beds in a personal plot.

Fence Weaving Options

To diversify the impression and differentiate the target distinctions during zoning, it is possible to perform various weaving techniques of simple patterns:

  • a chessboard (chess) with horizontally arranged tufts of vines;
  • chessboard diagonal - when some beams are deployed and fixed additionally, while others are executed in a horizontal plane;
  • openwork weaving of willow with your own hands, which, with a little practice, allows you to create real lace (a long process, but worth the time spent);
  • multi-colored options using dark and light wood or vinyl rods that can be found in the desired shade;
  • braiding: multi-strand (several rods) and single-strand.

A variety of techniques for weaving a fence from branches and rods

Craftsmen manage to lay out patterns from the released loops on top of the wattle made already in the process of work, thereby reinforcing the decorative component even at the most utilitarian shield of bars exposed to cover the household building. So you can make wattle in different ways, the main thing is to decide what it should be. It is necessary to accurately measure the estimated dimensions and calculate the necessary materials.

Beautiful fence in the Russian style

For those who are sensitive to environmental issues and do not want to ruin the surrounding nature, there is a wide selection of plastic rods, even with the texture of a tree of different species, creating the effect of a natural. This material has undeniable advantages:

  • strength;
  • duration of operation;
  • permanently ensured safety without additional care products;
  • lack of a preparatory stage of procurement (except for the time spent searching in construction supermarkets, purchase and delivery).

In the photo you can see how wattle and natural materials look, compare and make a choice in favor of any option.

Procurement of material

For hand-made manufacturing, three things are needed:

  • set of special tools;
  • supports and fastenings;
  • wooden or synthetic rods.

Procurement of material

The owner of the site, who made the capital wicker from boards or pine branches, also inevitably has problems if he did not take care of impregnating the material from natural disasters, drainage to drain water and applying the composition from insects.

The wicker fence will last longer if you use the tree branches left after spring or autumn tree pruning. The optimal time for the procurement of improvised material is considered the time from mid-autumn to early spring, which will not bring much harm to the stands.

In the video below you can see how to properly prepare the vine. It has a lot of useful information that is not useful if there is no suitable reservoir nearby.

Residents of old urban areas can use the branches left over from the preventive pruning carried out by local authorities, but not all types of trees are suitable for weaving. Those who have a forest belt nearby can use cut young branches of old trees, and cherry orchard, apple tree, walnut, dogwood branches will be useful to orchard owners.

The standard option, repeatedly tested in the Russian regions - Amur grape vine, aspen, birch, maple, but the most traditional and common - willow vine.

The bark and autumn shoots are removed from it, soaked in water to give flexibility (then it is much easier to weave). It can be painted in different colors using potassium permanganate, hydrogen peroxide, coated with stain or boiled to get a brown tint.

The technique of weaving from a rod has reached a high level of skill, its methods can be found on virtual information portals. Below is a video demonstrating what can be done from willow with an elementary presence of skills and skilled hands.

Mounting methods and supports are selected depending on the wattle material.

It can be metal pipes, wooden stakes of large diameter and non-thick logs for which holes are specially prepared or holes are dug.

In the recent past, wicker fences were the main way of fencing private territory. The availability of consumables and its lightweight structure made it possible to build such a design without serious financial investments. The wicker fence has not lost its relevance today. Highlighted archaism and natural material organically fit into the countryside landscape. An advantage is the ability to do wattle with your own hands.

Features wicker fence

Traditional wattle fence is a lightweight fence made of flexible branches or shoots. A characteristic feature of such a fence is a chaotic, artisanal structure, that is, the material is used in a "natural" form, and is practically not processed. Wicker fences are decorative structures, as they rarely exceed 1.5 in height. High wattle-woods are found even now, however this solution does not justify its existence, since the dimensions do not compensate for the fragility of the material, and the cracks will not allow to hide the area from prying eyes.

It is customary to fence around relatively small private estates, or use them as additional fences inside and outside the plot, for example, to enclose flower beds, a garden, etc. It is also ideal for delimiting the area between neighboring plots, since the low structure will not greatly obscure the adjacent territory.

Preparatory work

To obtain a positive result, it is very important to qualitatively prepare everything for further work. Wattle making is no exception.

Material selection and calculation

Traditionally, willow (talnik), hazel and willow are used to form wicker fences. These long, straight and naturally flexible branches with a minimum number of transverse processes are ideal for such fences. This material is also symmetrical, which is a definite advantage. In some cases, weaving from wild reeds is practiced. Flat and long stems bend perfectly, but such a fence will be very fragile. Bamboo wattle will be more durable, but in this case the material will have to be purchased.

Calculation of the required amount of vines is carried out "by eye". On average, one armful of rods is enough to form a fence with a height and length of 0.5 m. The value may deviate up or down, depending on the diameter of the rods and the density of weaving.

Note! You can weave tyn from young shoots of any trees and shrubs, but provided that the branches are at least 1 m long. However, it should be borne in mind that when choosing this material, weaving will be chaotic, and the process itself will be more troublesome.

Large, even branches with a diameter of 4 cm or more are used as supporting posts. The use of a round beam, boards or metal rods is also appropriate, as this will extend the life of the structure, however, they will stand out against the general background, and the wattle will lose its naturalness.

On average, the step between the bearing cross-beams is from 0.5 to 0.3 m, based on which the required amount of material is calculated. The more often the supports are located, the denser the weaving will be, and accordingly the structure will be stronger. With vertical weaving, you will also need longitudinal bars, at least five to the entire height of the fence.

Procurement of material

Harvesting rods for wattle are made in early spring or autumn. During this period, the movement of juice is minimal, and the tree is not burdened with an excess of foliage. The most even and long shoots are selected. If the manufacture of the fence will not be carried out immediately after harvesting, the branches must be well dried. For standard weaving, rods with a diameter of about 1 cm are selected. Larger diameter branches strengthen the structure, but at the same time make the structure less dense.

Immediately before weaving, the shoots are soaked in containers with water to make them more flexible and remove the bark. On average, this stage lasts about a week; for freshly cut branches, the period can be reduced to several days. After the material becomes flexible, and the bark begins to peel off easily, you can start processing. Ideally, a crustacean is used to remove the bark - a split branch of medium thickness with a limiter. Under normal conditions, you can use nippers or pliers. The tip of the rod is inserted between the clamps of the cutting pliers or the squeegee, and is pulled onto itself. If the branch is well wetted, then the bark should be removed almost effortlessly.

Completely cleaned rods can be coated with an antiseptic and stain to increase the service life or color change. This operation is only relevant if a small fence is being erected, since each branch needs to be handled separately. The lower part of the support stakes are impregnated with antiseptics and moisture-proofing compounds to protect them from decay.

Tools

In addition to preparing the material, you must take care of the availability of all necessary tools:

  • secateurs;
  • hacksaws for metal;
  • roulettes;
  • a wooden hammer;
  • a large hammer or sledgehammer;
  • wire;
  • construction thread or fishing line;
  • screwdriver.

How to make a wicker wooden fence from branches with your own hands

Horizontal weaving is traditional, since with its help a dense and durable fence is formed. The vertical arrangement of branches will not provide the necessary density. Wattle installation is carried out in the following order:

  1. Marking is being carried out. A thread or fishing line is pulled along the line of the future fence. According to the established landmark marks are placed for the supports. The distance between the bearing stakes with horizontal weaving can be from 0.3 to 0.5 m. The posts can be driven in every meter with vertical branches.
  2. Bearing supports are driven in for a fence to a depth of at least 0.5. With a horizontal arrangement of vines at the beginning and at the end of the fence, two racks are located so that the rod can be wrapped between them, thereby fixing it.
  3. If horizontal wattle is collected, the tops of the support posts are fixed by means of a rail so that they are not “led” during the creation process. With a vertical arrangement of branches, transverse crossbars are installed. For their fastening, you can use nails or screws.
  4. Bars are woven between the posts. Work begins with a thicker end. Weaving is carried out according to the principle of eight - the first pole is bypassed in front, the second from behind, the third again from the front, etc. The lower rods are attached to the bearing poles by wire. This will protect the wattle fence from sliding to the ground.
  5. Surplus is cut off. If the rod ended, for example, on the fifth pillar, then weaving continues from the fourth. This is necessary in order to make the fence homogeneous. It is also necessary to periodically direct the rods to the other side, changing the course of weaving. The sticking ends of the branches can be fixed with wire.
  6. Before installing the last row of rods, the locking bar is removed. The upper row is also tied with wire to the bearing stakes.

The recessed part of the supports is the weakest point of the wattle fence, because it quickly decays and collapses due to the influence of soil moisture. Therefore, it is recommended to install the stakes in plastic pipes of a suitable diameter that are previously driven into the ground. This will increase the life of the fence several times.

Vertical weaving is carried out according to a similar principle, with the difference that each rod is recommended to be fixed both from above and from below so that the structure does not stagger.

Care for the ready tyn

On average, the wattle life does not exceed 5–7 years. After this period, the fence begins to decay. The main "enemy" of the wicker fence is dampness, which makes rot support and the lower part of the structure. To prolong the life of this product, it is necessary to prevent the accumulation of water under it. It is also undesirable for thick and tall grass to grow under the wattle fence, as increased humidity is created in the thickets.

For protection, you can use antiseptics or matte varnishes. They will protect the aboveground part from moisture. If you prefer lacquer coating, then it is advisable to use matte compositions, since the gloss will look unnatural. The annual treatment with protective compounds will help maximize the service life of the wicker fence.

It is easy to make a wicker fence with your own hands, even outside the city. At the same time, financial costs will be minimal.

At the country cottage, I want to do something with my own hands, so that it turns out beautifully and unusual. And where does the summer cottage begin? From the fence. And the most colorful wooden fence is wattle. If you wish, you can master the technology of construction of this picturesque hedge.

Wattle and its features

It is almost impossible to see the wattle fence in modern everyday life, but since it is an indispensable attribute of scenery in films and theatrical productions of past rural life, everyone has an idea of \u200b\u200bthis kind of fence.

His appearance is characteristic: stakes braided by flexible shoots are dug into the earth with a certain step. Such a design meets the definition of “cheap and cheerful”: it does not need a foundation, and building material in rural areas is easy to get for free. And any person can cope with the construction alone. Therefore, in the old days, wattle was a folk version of the fence.

The main value of the wattle fence is its artistry - among the layman, he is associated with antiquity and national traditions. The impression will be especially strong if a sunflower grows near a wicker fence, the canvas is decorated with stems of climbing plants, and an inverted clay pot hangs on one of the stakes.

Wattle can be decorated with clay pots, ornamental plants and flowers

But it is difficult to call such a solid fence, so it will not be appropriate everywhere. You can fence a suburban area with a private house with a wattle fence if it is styled in antique style. In most cases, a similar fence is used for zoning the courtyard, raspberry railing or for decorating flower beds.

The contour of the wicker fence is not necessary to build a straight line, so it is suitable for round flower beds and platforms.

Preparation for manufacture

First we think over: from what material we will build wattle on the basis of personal preferences and the advice of masters of wickerwork.

Wattle Material

For work you will need:

  • wooden rods (willow, vine, hazel, birch, etc.);
  • stakes wooden or thick branches of any trees;
  • racks, metal pipes;
  • poles and wire.

Any flexible and rather strong stems are suitable for him: a vine, young shoots of hazel, birch branches; but traditionally such a fence is woven from willow twigs. They combine strength, flexibility and affordability: willow grows in abundance everywhere.

And also live wattle is built from it: shoots are planted in the ground and laid as they grow.

Rogoz and reed, despite their flexibility, durability and widespread distribution, should not be considered a good material for wattle: after drying, the shoots become very brittle, so the hedge will turn out to be very short-lived.

Blanks for weaving vary in color, thickness and structure of each type of tree

Take a measuring tape or stick with you to measure the rods of the desired length. And it equals at least two steps between the supports, that is, each rod must tie at least three racks.

The rods choose plastic and even, from 1 to 3 cm in diameter. Instances with branching or painful growths are rejected.

It is more convenient to work with freshly cut vine. But if the time after cutting is missed, the branches have dried up - immerse them in water or hold them above the steam. The quality of the plant material will be restored. If you need to pre-prepare the rods for a long period, then the chopped vine is freed from the leaves, tied in bundles and stacked under a canopy for drying. To save space, build a temporary rack. Being well dried, the material is stored for a long time.

As stakes, pick up thick branches (with a diameter of four centimeters or more). They are buried in the ground, therefore, they must be longer than the height of the future hedge by at least 0.5 m in length. With a fence height of more than one meter, it is advisable to dig in stakes one third of their length.

A rotting pine, peeled from bark (containing a large amount of resin) or a metal pipe is well suited for this purpose - the racks will still be hidden by the canvas.

Calculate the number of supports based on the duration of the fence and the step between them. Racks are installed half a meter from each other, but the thinner and lighter the vine used, the smaller the distance between the stakes. You can do this as well: dig in the stakes after 1 m, and between them install one or two intermediate supports from a thick willow rod, dug to a depth of 30 cm.

In addition to the above, long poles and wire are useful.

Tool

You will need the following tools:

  • garden drill (there are models with a motor);
  • secateurs, knife, awl;
  • self-tapping screws;
  • screwdriver or screwdriver;
  • hammer mallet;

Prepare everything before you start work, so you don’t get distracted from the creative part of the work.

Types of weaving fences

The fence of the branches is woven in different ways. The appearance of the wattle fence directly depends on the functions that are assigned to it, and on the selected material.

In the direction of thin branches in the fence, weaving is divided into two types:

Vertical weave fence - video

And there are many ways to weave: use ready-made options or invent your own. Let's consider three main ones:

  • braiding - the figured frame of the pegs with one or two rods at once according to the principle of braiding the braids. The method is difficult for a beginner, since you have to hold several rods in one hand, draw them between the pegs and do not stray from the pattern. Such a wattle fence is placed in front of the beds so that no shadow is created, or used as a dividing strip;

    The fence in the form of braided pigtails is placed with the expectation that sunlight will pass through it well

  • weaving in one layer - from it begin to build their first fences, since this is the easiest way. The vine circled around the pegs, like a wave - then on the one hand, then on the other. At the edges it is fixed with a metal bracket or screwed with wire. The fence is obtained with small gaps, so it is used anywhere;

    Weaving in one layer is the simplest type of weaving of the fence, but if you add curly elements to it, it will adorn both a low flower bed with greenery and a flower garden

  • multi-strand weaving is the most labor-intensive and difficult way. The rods are needed very long, thin and supple, otherwise they will break. This wattle is dense and massive. It is placed on sturdy pillars or framed in wooden frames.

    Stranded weaving is used for fences that enclose other people's areas, or for a resting place where they hide from the sun

In addition to these methods, there are additional options for weaving, but they are all based on the principle of braiding vertical or horizontal sticks, poles, metal pipes or thick rods in different directions.

In addition to these methods, there are many others - choose the one that you think is suitable for your situation

Wicket fence installation methods

Wattle is convenient in that it is installed in different ways, depending on the operating conditions. The external fence is mounted on metal poles and framed in a rigid frame. It turns into a real solid fence.

Wicker rectangular blanks are made separately and are framed in a rigid frame and mounted on steel poles, used as a fence

A fence for zoning space is woven into the gaps between the trees or pillars of the summer terrace.

The fence visually divides the space into specific zones and is mounted between trees and other parts of the plot.

If you are going to protect the place for rest and shade it from direct sunlight, then the fence is woven into the finished metal structure installed in this place.

Woven into a metal construction, weaving will protect the resting place from the sun and will hide you from the eyes of neighbors

Wattle making: step by step instructions

First, they clean the area of \u200b\u200bgarbage. Then markup is carried out:

  1. Steel pins or pegs carved from wood are driven into the corners of the enclosed area.
  2. A nylon cord, fishing line or string is pulled between the corner pegs.
  3. Along the thread indicate the position of the intermediate racks (in increments of up to half a meter).

Installation is carried out sequentially:

  1. Holes in the soil are drilled at least half a meter in depth so that the fence holds firmly and does not fall after weaving.
  2. Install racks. It is cleaned of bark, impregnated with an antiseptic, and the buried part must also be coated with bitumen mastic, tar or wrapped with roofing felt (fixed with wire or sewn with a construction stapler).
  3. The angular supports are the first to lower the recesses into the recesses, but do not fill them, but only fix them with the help of wooden wedges or brick fragments. On their tops pull the cord and visually check the horizontal tension; if necessary, adjust the depth of immersion of the racks, and fill the holes with soil and sand, and ram. Metal racks can be concreted.
  4. Again pull the cord and, using it as a guide, establish intermediate stakes. If they are wooden, then in order to avoid deflection during braiding, their tops are fastened with equal poles.
  5. If the vine is dried - it is softened by steaming, which gives the fastest effect, or by immersion in hot water (the process will take several hours), or by lowering only the ends into the water (flexibility will be restored in 1 - 2 weeks).
  6. With the help of a double-tooth fork grinder, the teeth of which converge in a wedge and have sharp internal edges, clean the rods from the bark. If the bark is removed with difficulty, then the rods are not soaked to the end

    you can make the loaf yourself by simply splitting the branch and rewinding it tightly in the place of the splinter so that it does not go deep

  7. Weave the bottom row (15 cm from the ground) using a thicker vine. The individual rods that make up the row must be stacked with overlap in one rack. That is, if the first rod goes around the first 4 racks, then start laying the second one from rack No. 3. In the overlap area, the rods are tied with wire or tape.

    Wattle device diagram: other schemes can be used

  8. It is desirable to strengthen the bottom row - the vine is twisted with wire and screwed to the supports with screws. If the rods are thin, then metal brackets are used to secure the row.

    The horizontal weaving of the fence starts from the bottom - you can weave from single rods or circle the stakes immediately with a beam

  9. Where the first row bypassed the rack in front, the second should be located behind it, and vice versa. This alternation is also observed when weaving subsequent rows. When they are typed 3 or 4, tap on the braid with a mallet and tighten the rows. To harden the fabric, weave wire is used - every 7-8 rows with fixation on the supports.
  10. The ends of each row are cut and drilled to the extreme supports with screws.

    The ends of each rod should be securely fixed to the rack by drilling them or wrapping them with wire

In a living wicker fence, the vine is launched vertically. For this:

  1. Rods are horizontally tied to the posts - 25 cm from each other.
  2. The upper bar is led to the tops of the hedge so that they do not stick out in different directions.
  3. A live vine is twisted vertically between horizontal rods in the same way as between vertical pegs in horizontal weaving. At the same time, the lower end of each rod is pierced into the ground so that the plant takes root. The upper edge of the fabric is trimmed.

Over time, live wattle will be hardened. It is better to cut the tops of the growing wattle in early spring or late autumn.

Willow vine took root and the fence turned green

The hedge gives a shadow, cool and rustles with leaves.

How to make wattle durable

Upon contact with air, dead wood either shrinks or rots. Therefore, the finished fence is covered with a special varnish (furniture or yacht).

To change the initial color of the fence, it is stained with potassium permanganate, bleached with hydrogen peroxide or painted, renewing the color every year.

If painting wattle is not part of your plans, it should be treated with a good antiseptic. The lower part, which is most exposed to moisture, can be further treated with vitriol or heated bitumen.

And you can make Swedish paint. To do this, you will need (per 10 l of the finished product):

  • table salt 250 g;
  • rye flour 800 g;
  • iron sulfate 400 g;
  • drying oil or linseed oil 300 g;
  • iron minium 300-600 g;
  • water - about 6 liters.

Paint Recipe:

  1. 2 l of water is brought to a boil and dissolved in it is salt and iron sulfate.
  2. In a separate container, rye flour is mixed with water to a pulp consistency and this mixture is poured into brine.
  3. Cook for 30 minutes with constant stirring.
  4. Gradually pour the drying oil, after which the broth needs to be mixed with vigorous movements (an emulsion should form).
  5. Add meerk dissolved in hot water.
  6. The resulting concentrate is again well mixed and diluted with water to a volume of 10 l.

The tinted meerk mix will have a golden color. Instead, you can use other alkali-resistant pigments with an iron content (umber, ocher, iron oxide mummy). The paint will turn red or brown.

The composition is applied so that for every 1 m 2 it wastes about 300 ml. Rub the paint until the pores are full. The best weather for painting works is windless and cloudy, then the paint dries for a long time and better sets with the surface.

If the surface to be painted is particularly rough, put more flour into the paint. It acts as a leveling mixture and, thanks to it, the paint adheres to such surfaces better.

Swedish wood is not suitable for wood that is smooth-edged.

Old wattle in a new way

The forgotten wattle fence is gaining a second life today in the form of blanks from plastic products. This is the so-called polymer vine - a tube made of high-strength polyethylene with a diameter of 18 mm, the outer surface of which imitates a natural vine.

The artificial vine is a tube made of soft plastic, but looks like natural wood

Polymer rods are flexible, have high strength, do not rot and are absolutely indifferent to such weather factors as temperature changes, precipitation or drought. Manufacturers are assured of a service life of 20 years.

The color of the product may be white, ashy, brown or gray. Green vines are also delivered on special order, but they cost 10% more. The length of the whip is 3, 4 and 6 m.

Ready-made sections of the fence-braid are also offered, the frame of which is made of a metal profile with powder coating. They are of different heights, and the width is 1.5 m. There are options with continuous weaving, that is, without gaps, in which each row is formed by two vines. You can order a kit with a gate and a wicket.

The appearance of a wattle fence made of artificial material cannot be distinguished from wooden

The "branded" wattle fence looks presentable, since it is perfectly even and neat, so they can protect the area with an expensive cottage. At the same time, we can talk about the vandal resistance of the fence: the fabric is woven so that it is impossible to pull out the rod - for this you will have to disassemble the entire section.

The wattle is mounted on a strip foundation with a depth of 200 mm. Racks are equipped with wide soles, are screwed to the foundation, without deepening.

You can purchase a set individually and weave yourself not a straight wattle fence, but round. In the “baskets” woven from a polymer vine, flower beds are also arranged.

Video: weaving a fence in a simple way in one layer

Wattle for a long time remained popular among the people. Uncomplicated manufacturing technology, available materials and improvised tools, and with all this, an interesting appearance that gives the site an unusual flavor.

In addition to fruiting trees and beds with vegetables, at each cottage there are objects that do not have a practical purpose. They simply delight the eye, create a mood and make every time with pleasure to step on a summer cottage. It is great if decorativeness and functionality are combined. An example of such a successful unity can be a wicker fence. You can install it both on the border of the site, and inside, separating the garden from the recreation area or flower bed from the platform for the car. Such a fence looks very natural, creating a special cozy atmosphere on the site.

This decor item can be bought or made with your own hands. In the second case, pleasure will bring not only the possession of a beautiful thing, but also the process of its creation. The materials that are used to weave the fence are very affordable, you won’t have to pay a penny for them.

What materials can you make a wicker fence

The classic wicker fence is made of any thin and flexible wood. The choice depends on what area you live in and what grows in the nearest forest. It is enough to take an ax and go into the thicket to understand which of the possible materials is more accessible. The best for these purposes are considered to be willow and hazel. These are common plants with flexible but durable wood.

If they are not, you can use the branches of birch and alder. They are somewhat less plastic, of different thicknesses, but a fence made of such wood will last a long time.

For temporary barriers, reeds or cattails can be used. It is easier to work with them, but after a few years such a fence will have to be completely replaced or removed from the site.

Wicker fence made of birch branches

Since birch branches are not very thin and not very flexible, it is difficult to weave them in the traditional way. It is difficult to find material long enough for horizontal weaving. Therefore, from such wood most often make fences vertically weave. This means that the rods are installed parallel to the central supports, clinging to the transverse crossbars.

The construction technology of such a fence is not complicated, but it requires physical strength. Just because long branches of a sufficiently large diameter have an impressive weight. So, working with a birch is more likely a male occupation.

The decorativeness of such a fence is due primarily to the appearance of the material. The light bark, characteristic of birch, with black patches looks very impressive. Therefore, when preparing the material, it is important not to damage it too much.

Procurement of material

Harvesting branches for the fence is best during the period when the plant is at rest: from late autumn to early spring. Firstly, cutting branches during this period will not lead to the death of the tree. Secondly, such wood is more durable. In wattle, it is not treated additionally with protective compounds, so the factor of susceptibility to decay is very important.

You need to choose straight branches with a minimum number of branches. Cut them to the place where the thickening begins. For ease of transportation, birch rods are collected in bundles, tied with a rope and transferred to the vehicle. In order for the rope not to damage the bark during transportation, it is better to put a piece of fabric under it.

For wattle fence branches with a diameter of up to 5 cm are taken, smaller is better, for beams 5–7 cm, and for load-bearing supports - not less than 10 cm. You can use treated timber as columns and beams, but a homogeneous structure made of the same material looks more organic .

In addition to the prepared branches, you will need:

  • ax;
  • big hammer;
  • shovel or drill;
  • screwdriver;
  • self-tapping screws.

Manufacturing instruction

Work begins with the preparation and installation of support poles. Since the weight of the structure will be impressive, the posts must also be powerful. They need to be driven in or dug into the ground to a depth of at least 60 cm. If the soil is loose, and thick branches of birch are used as supports, they can simply be driven in. For this, the lower edge of the log is sharpened with an ax. Before installation, the part of the branch that will be in the ground needs to be cleaned and treated with an antiseptic. In a humid environment, it will be very susceptible to decay, therefore, it needs additional protection.

If the soil is dense, then the columns are easier to dig. To do this, we prepare a pit, the diameter of which will be several centimeters larger than the diameter of the column. We establish a support and we make backfilling. We compact the soil so that the column does not swing.

We fix the horizontal bars to the posts with self-tapping screws. Their number depends on the height of the fence. The distance between the crossbars should be at least half a meter. Otherwise, it will be very difficult to weave thick branches.

Getting to weaving. We cut the branches to the desired length and start from the top, tracing the crossbars from different sides. The position of each subsequent branch should be a mirror image of the previous one. To make the fence as dense as possible, knock branches to one another with a hammer.

Weaving pattern

The installation process of the poles and the installation of the crossbeams is shown in detail in the video:

Flexible willow vine fence

Classical wickerwork is made from willow vines. Its long, thin and flexible lashes allow you to turn an ordinary fence into a real work of art. If there is a place near your site where you can pick up this vine, you should not spend money on wooden or stone fences. Weave wattle, and it will become one of the main decorations of the site.

Harvesting vines

Harvesting vines can be done at any time of the year, but it is preferable to do this in the winter. The winter vine is drier, less prone to decay, but just as flexible and ductile.

It is advisable not to cut all the lashes in a row, but to choose a material of approximately the same diameter. At the gathering place they are tied in bales and taken to the site. Then sorted, remove the remnants of the leaves and cut off too thin tops.

Usually the winter vine is flexible enough and for the construction of the wattle fence it does not need to be additionally prepared. If the material seems fragile to you, soak it in boiling water for several hours, as is done with a vine for weaving baskets. From this, the lashes will become more elastic and supple.

Manufacturing instruction

For the construction of wattle, in addition to the vine, you will need:

  • drill or shovel;
  • knife and pruner
  • self-tapping screws and a screwdriver;
  • metal wire;
  • material for pillars.

The most organically looks wattle on wooden unprocessed posts. But if they are not, you can use a metal pipe or bar.

Work begins with the layout and preparation of the pits. Usually the columns are set quite often, at a distance of about a meter from each other. The depth of their digging into the ground is not less than 30 cm. Moreover, the higher the fence is planned, the greater the depth of the posts should be.

Between the supporting posts we have vertical crossbars, which we will then braid. This role should be played by the thickest of the rods you have prepared, with a diameter of up to 3 cm. The distance between them should be 10-15 cm and the same depth in the ground. The thinner the bulk of your vines, the smaller the distance between the bars.

Now we can start weaving. The lower lash should not be lowered close to the ground, raise it by 7-10 cm. This is necessary so that the fence does not rot during rains and snow melt. Connect the first rod with a metal wire, this will give the structure additional strength. Then weave according to the scheme, after every 3-4 rows, sealing the rods by tapping. In about every 10 rows, weave the wire.

There are many patterns of weaving a fence from a vine. Here are just a few of them:

The video shows the process of weaving a sectional mobile fence, which can be moved or removed for the winter:

Wicker fence from the boards

Even if there is no natural material at hand and there is no place to collect it, you can make a “modernized” version of the wattle fence.

To do this, you will need:

  • edged board of small thickness, treated with a protective composition;
  • beam for columns from 100 mm thick;
  • hammer;
  • screwdriver and screws;
  • saw.

Manufacturing instruction

There are two types of such fences: with a horizontal arrangement of boards and with a vertical. Which one to choose depends on your taste.

We always start work by marking and digging in pillars. The distance between the posts should be about 2 meters and correspond to the length of the boards. For reliability, the poles in prepared pits are best concreted, since the fence will turn out to be heavy and with high windage.

When the concrete hardens, we install intermediate columns of a smaller size, they can simply be dug into the ground to a depth of 30 cm. These elements are needed for horizontal weaving. When vertical to the supporting poles with screws, we fasten two transverse trims that will serve as the center of weaving. The distance between them in the center should be large, at least 80 cm. This is due to the fact that the board is not very plastic and it is difficult to get a large bending radius.

We start weaving, alternately tracing the boards around the supports from different sides. Each next board is installed in mirror image. After completion of the work, the fence can be painted or treated with a stain. It looks best in color close to natural while maintaining the texture of the material.

Decoration

Wicker fences made of twigs and wood can be decorated in ethnic style with clay dishes, putting them on the columns protruding above the weaving. Artificial flowers or annual flowering lianas with thin shoots look good on such a fence. But even without additional decoration, such worries look very impressive.

For several years, ethnic motifs have been in fashion. In everything - in the interior, clothing, landscape architecture, country trends are no exception.

However, it is at least strange to imagine the African savannah or equip a space in the style of an American ranch at your dacha. Whether it’s a matter - antique stylization, Slavic motifs, the beauty of Russian nature.

You can’t imagine anything better than your native landscape, maybe because this is how ordinary wattle fence at the dacha attracts the attention of our people, tyn, arising from the distant past, like greetings from our ancestors.

In this article, we will present a master class on the manufacture of wattle in the country with our own hands.

Advantages

Wicker fence has a lot of advantages, the listing of which begins with the beauty of appearance. The master’s flight of fantasy determines its dimensions, purpose, performance technique, decoration.

There are real canvases worthy of a place in the Tretyakov Gallery, but for some reason even unpretentious tyn attracts attention to themselves, causing nostalgic notes in the soul.

The advantages of the fence include:

  • aesthetic significance;
  • naturalness, environmental feasibility;
  • profitability;
  • ease of execution, accessibility.

The master makes a beautiful tyn, choosing its size depending on the destination. At the same time, the beauty of a light fence is an obstacle in itself. Of course, she will not resist a person, but she will not let stray dogs and other uninvited guests.

The construction of tyna does not require financial investments, the gifts of nature or household waste can be used as material.

If any costs are needed, they are so insignificant that they are completely invisible.

Everyone can make their own wicker fence in the country from what he has there, and then decorate it to their taste, because any old pot is the best decorative element for this, any unnecessary item is a chip!

Interesting fact: making hedges soothes nerves. Merging with nature, performing monotonous movements, while fantasizing, a person completely forgets problems and failures.

disadvantages

That this is not an ideal defense is understandable. A wicker fence is more of a decoration, although many villagers enclose their gardens with just such designs.

The disadvantages include:

  • short term of operation;
  • low reliability of protection;
  • impossibility of repair.

A fence of this type serves as a season, another. Wind, heat, rain do not spare its beauty. Wattle fence does not withstand a large amount of snow, breaks under its weight. The construction is practically not subject to restoration, since each of its parts is connected, woven with another and entails the destruction of the entire ligament.

Note: do not throw away old unsuitable wattle. A decorative fence that has served its time is on fire. Combustion product, ash, excellent organic fertilizer.

And it would be possible to analyze all the shortcomings, but there is no need, because such a fence weaves for the soul and beauty of the landscape.

Views

There are as many types of wicker fence as there are masters in the world involved in their manufacture. All the variety can be seen in the photo on the Internet.

Such fences differ in size, weaving technique and degree of decoration.

You can choose a fence for your cottage from the following types:

  • a high fence, which is fixed on a brick-concrete base, filling the space between the brickwork of the pillars, tightly pressed to each other by stakes of wood;
  • low decorative fences used to enclose flower beds, plots of land with decorative elements (well, alpine hill, etc.);
  • meter fences used for zoning the space, separating the recreation area (swing, gazebo, dry stream) ;
  • horizontal
  • vertical.

A woven piece of the fence can be mounted on a prepared base.

Rounded decorative fences do not need a base.

Due to their lightness, they are installed without fastening or attached to pegs stuck in the ground.

Masters advise: it’s more convenient to weave the fence in sections, and it’s easier to repair, and if the section cannot be restored, it is easily replaced with a new one.

What to make

Any flexible materials can be used as materials for the manufacture of wattle, that's where the flight of imagination is.

Someone twists the painted old newspapers, so that they get long sticks, someone knits twigs of grass, by the way, the strength of nettles is quite suitable for weaving a fence.

Traditionally use materials such as:

  • cattail;
  • reeds;
  • vine;
  • hazel;
  • winds;
  • birch tree.

The latter, however, is a pity. She already gets it, they tear off the bark for crafts made of birch bark, and destroy the tree.

To extend the life of the fence, the material is coated with an antiseptic, varnish, which leads to higher construction costs.

Take note: reeds, cattail will serve for 2 years, no more, the grass and at all for the season, winter will destroy it. Quite a long time, about 4 years, there will be wattle from willow branches.

Willow wattle

Willow wattle workshop:

  1. Horizontal wattle from a rod. Collected branches exempt from leaves, bark. You can use pliers or a sharp knife. The resulting raw material is soaked for several days.

You can soar the raw materials in hot water, so the vines are ready to work faster.

They make the basis - they drive the stakes into the ground at the same distance from each other. The smaller the distance, the stronger the wattle fence. Then they thread the branches between the stakes, skirting them one by one, then with one branch, then with the other;

  1. Live vertical wattle. Prepare a groove in which to close freshly cut willow branches close to each other, securing them together with ribbons, colored ropes. Ditch, pour the groove with the sticks of the willow stuck. Over time hedge comes to life, turns green, with such beauty never wants to part.

Note: start weaving immediately when the vine is steamed. Choose the same branch size, but don’t cut too much, take care of nature. Wattle looks best in the openings of a brick fence, aesthetically and reliably.

Weaving principle

How to weave? Put two vertical pillars, choosing branches thicker for this, strengthen in the ground.

Between them, set the branches vertically, insert a horizontal rod between the branches in such a way that the first branch hugs him on the right and the next branch on the left.

The next horizontal branch should also be put on top, only now with vertical branches hug it on the contrary, the first on the left, the second on the right.

You better understand with your eyes how to weave correctly when at least once you watch a video on weaving. Everything will immediately become clear.

The weaving principle is simple: the first branch runs on one side, the second on the other. Docking parts are woven into the structure, giving it rigidity.

Specialist suggestion: train in the sand, sticking sticks and taking them out without difficulty, until you master this simple science. Try to bind small branches, put your hand on the manufacture of the mat, which can then be used to decorate the fence.

Fencing made of other materials

The use of modern materials is also acceptable in the manufacture of decorative fences.

Packing tapes from PVC boxes are perfect for this purpose. Weave them best with cubes, starting from the corner.

To do this, lay out strips of a certain length on the table surface, so that it is convenient, fasten the first two strips with a stapler, sequentially attaching the following strips.

You will get a nice rug, which can then be fixed with wire or multi-colored strips of fabric to the racks.

Decorative wattle fence is a mobile design. To firmly stand on the ground, the base must be made in the form of triangles.

In a strong wind, the structure will tip over, but natural phenomena are temporary. Tapes can be painted in different colors with a felt-tip pen or paint. A bright spot of the fence will decorate the landscape.

Any materials useful for creativity, armed with the desire and pieces of old plywood, you can invent incredibly beautiful decorations, while the amount of garbage in the house will be significantly reduced.

Surely somewhere somewhere old artificial flowers, New Year's wreaths, garlands are lying. Use old toys, restoring them. You can update the hedge at least every day, dressing it with wreaths of flowers, pumpkin fruits, pots of petunias, loach.

Gardener Tip: decorate your cottage. The beds surrounded by a wicker fence look very impressive.
