How to lay nichrome wire in a frameless brush. Heated wipers are a great solution for frost. Installation of heated "wipers"

Heated wipers are very useful in the winter. This part can significantly affect driving in bad weather conditions. In this article, I will tell you how to independently make wipers with heating and the multiple advantages of this device.

Conventional frame brushes in the winter season create such a serious problem as freezing. A cold climate certainly does not benefit them. Water, which freezes at low temperatures, makes the rocker hinges motionless, as a result, the brush is no longer so tightly attached to the glass. Because of this, untreated areas remain. This also makes you think that it is worth buying heated wipers.

It often happens that, due to the wrong choice of rubber compound, a cleaning cloth dubbed in the tape, and the janitor creaks nasty and jumps on glass. Any wiper may suffer from this problem. Most often, the wiper that has a completely unknown origin in terms of the manufacturer suffers.

Based on the fact that winter periods are rather difficult on the main territory of Russia, and weather conditions change all the time, it is better to use heated wipers instead of ordinary ones. Heating will ensure a clean windshield in all weather conditions, and this is a direct guarantee of safety. Yes, and the brushes themselves will last much longer. Winter warm wiper blades, they are also popularly called heated car wipers, will solve several important problems of drivers at once. I advise you to worry about this immediately with the advent of cold weather. In general, do-it-yourself wipers are easy to install.

DIY heating

Before installing wipers that have heating, you should understand their classification and features so as not to mess with the installation sites.

They differ in the type of brushes. Their first type is practically no different from ordinary ones, but this is only externally. In order for such a janitor to be more efficient, metallic materials of his structure were replaced with plastic. Plastic is known to be less susceptible to freezing than metal. They also use special rubber that repels water. It does not freeze to the windshield or rear window and is softer at low temperatures than its usual counterpart. In the case of the first type of brushes there is no need to change them to ordinary ones even with the onset of the warm season, all thanks to their excellent characteristics.

Otherwise, heated windshield wipers can compete with the wire brush, the frame of which is enclosed in a rubber cover. This is the second type of brush. Their unique structure protects the internal structure of metal and the rubber itself from freezing in the key links. Heated wipers are good, but this type retains its mobility and is completely protected from corrosion. Unfortunately, they are difficult to clean from moisture, because due to a sharp change in temperature, water simply condenses directly from the air on metal elements. They also lose their effectiveness at high speeds.

And finally, the last winter type of this mechanism is heated wipers. They look like a brush without a frame, but with a built-in special element of a heating type. In addition, they are able to maintain their elasticity for a long time and such brushes are well protected from freezing. However, heated wipers need to be connected to the electrical system of the machine.

You can install the Burner Heated Brushes yourself. Each brush comes with a set of adapters in the box, as well as detailed installation instructions. There are, in general, several connection methods. One of them is connecting to the network through the cigarette lighter. To carry out this manipulation, you will need wires added to the kit, which are designed specifically for such a connection. Do not forget to connect the burner wipers to the button that controls the rear window heating. To do this, you need to purchase a special kit consisting of connectors, special relays, wiring and fuses.

Connection is also carried out via the radio button. This is the easiest and most convenient option. With the help of a special kit, the driver will provide himself with riding comfort. The connection is very simple - first we connect the device directly to the battery, and then we take a remote control with us. When you press the button, the brushes will turn on. This device has an off timer that protects the battery from premature discharge.

Many brave car enthusiasts take not only the connection of purchased wipers with heating, but also create them with their own hands. To do this, use a set of ordinary wipers, nichrome filament, soldering iron, a piece of wire, acid and flux. You will also need heat shrink, heat gun and some other tool.

Consider the example of frameless winter wipers. Their design is very simple. We place nichrome on both sides of the gum. Gum, so as not to fall out, you can push inward. But this must be done carefully, otherwise they will tear. Good advice - use a thermal gun to connect the rubber to a metal plate, otherwise when putting on the protective cover, the structure may fall apart. I advise you to immediately measure the resistance level. If it is in the range of 8-9 ohms - this is very good. Well, if the figure is less, there is a risk of heating and even glass breaking. Then we put protective covers on the wipers to protect the structure from destruction when we connect the wiring to the mount.

We place a fixture on the wipers, drill small holes into which we wire our wires. In the top cover we drill 2 more holes for wires. Although this can not be done. Wires are sometimes held when opening the cover through the slot. To eliminate the risk that the threads can close together, you should also prepare a couple of heat shrinks.

We collect all parts, measuring resistance again. If the indicators are normal, you can solder the wires. It is important to check the presence of mass on the mounts. If so, then you need to connect it to the mount, too, throwing 12V under the hood. Both wipers are connected at the same time, the fuse should be set to 5A, then we take on the relay, and put the switches from the wipers into the cabin. And, in fact, everything is ready. Each review about this method carries positive information. So you can make heated wipers with your own hands, which in 10 minutes will free the glass of your car from ice and snow in winter.

Video “Heated wipers”

The video shows the installation of heated wipers on a Scoda Oktavia car. Also, after watching the recording, you will learn how to connect the wipers yourself without the help of specialists.

With the advent of cold weather, many motorists are faced with such a problem as icing of windows. Of course, when the interior of the car is already warm enough, the ice on the windows begins to melt gradually, however, when driving in severe frost, an ice crust may appear on the glass even with a heated interior. It can be difficult to remove it with the help of the wipers, and the wipers sometimes freeze to the glass. What to do in this case? The way out of the situation will be the completion of the wipers, namely, equipping them with a heating system. Now, wipers in frost will always be warm enough not to freeze and effectively deal with snow and ice on the windshield.

The refinement is quite simple and cheap, but very effective. Everything works on the basis of a nichrome wire.

Materials and tools for homemade:
- nichrome wire f 0.3 mm;
- pin;
- wires for connecting the heating element;
- soldering iron with solder;
- connectors type "mother" for connecting wipers (optional);
- button for control.

The manufacturing process of heated wipers:

Step one. Prepare nichrome
First of all, it is important to properly prepare the heating element, in our case it is a nichrome wire. Such a wire is often used in the manufacture of various spirals and other things; it can be bought without problems on the market or in a specialized store. For homemade work, the author chose a nichrome wire of 0.3 mm, in length it should be twice the length of the wipers, and here you need to add 200 mm.

Now that the desired piece of wire is selected, it needs to be aligned. The fact is that the wire will run along the entire length of the wiper, so if it is crooked, the wipers may not fit snugly to the glass in some places. In total, it will be necessary to prepare a length of approximately 0.5 meters. The author puts a spiral on the awl, and then draws a piece of the desired length. Further, in order to align the wire, it can be tensioned and heated above the torch. After cooling, the adopted form will be fixed.

Step Two Installation of the heating element in the wipers

At this stage, you need to measure a piece of wire with a length equal to half the length of the janitor, adding 100 mm. The wire must be bent as seen in the photo. The long part of the end of the wire must be inserted into the hollow part of the rubber of the janitor, and the short end must be pierced with the rubber so that it does not short-circuit the adapter located on the profile. First, the hole can be pierced with a pin, as it is seen in the photo.

Now you need to slowly pull on both ends of the wire, while it is important to ensure that the wire does not twist, otherwise in these places it often burns out. As a result, the entire wire should hide in the rubber.

At the other end, you will need to make a loop, then a cambric is put on here. This loop is needed in order to compensate for a different degree of expansion when heating nichrome and rubber.

Step Three Display contacts

Two holes must be made in the plastic profile, then through them two contacts from the heating element must be brought out. After that, you can refuel the rubber band.

To connect the ends you need to bend and tin. Subsequently, wires are soldered to them.

Step Four Connecting homework to the on-board network
To connect the heating element, you will need a wire with a section of 2x0.2 length of about 2 m. To protect the soldering place, the author glued a piece of profile to this place, dichloroethane was used as glue.

Next, to a 2x0.2 wire, you need to solder a 2x0.35 wire 1.5 meters long, the solder points are isolated by heat shrink. On the other side of the wire, the author installed a female connector for easy connection.

If we talk about numbers, then the resistance of the heating element for a janitor with a length of 45 cm should be approximately 8.8 Ohms. For a janitor 60 cm long, the resistance is 11 ohms. Below is a diagram of how to arrange the elements.

The problem of freezing wipers to the windshield in the winter is familiar to many motorists. Even the presence of the function of fixing the wipers in the service position often does not save. Moreover, the freezing of adhering snow prevents the quality of windshield cleaning. For people who are not going to put up with this kind of inconvenience, consider how to make heated wipers with their own hands.

ALTERNATIVE OPTIONS

If you are familiar with the concepts of current strength, resistance, short circuit, the principle of operation of the relay, the basic rules for installing and connecting additional electrical equipment remotely, then the idea of making the heating of the wipers with your own hands is better left until better times. Alternatively, you can offer:

 • buy ready-made wipers with heating. Some models are equipped with a control module, which is able to automatically turn on / off heating, depending on changes in temperature. Heated from the cigarette lighter socket, so there is no need to interfere with the car wiring. In addition, if you want to bring the inclusion on a separate button, it will require less effort than a full-fledged production of heating;
 • set the heating zone wipers, which will save from freezing brushes to the glass. The only thing - remember that when used in severe frost, the risk of getting a windshield crack due to a large temperature difference increases.

OPTIONS FOR INDEPENDENT MANUFACTURE

After examining the materials that pop up on the network for “do-it-yourself wipers”, you can conclude that there are 3 popular ways to implement heating:

OPTION WITH NICHROM THREAD

For the manufacture of heating, it is recommended to use a nichrome wire with a diameter of 0.32 mm². Be sure to calculate the current consumption to install the fuse of the desired rating and select the wire cross section. For example, 1 m of a thread of the X20H80 series and a diameter of 0.32 mm² has a resistance of 13.7 Ohms. With a known voltage and resistance, the power can be found by the formula W = U 2 / Rwhere w- power, U 2voltage squared R -resistance . It can be calculated that the power will be equal to 14.3 watts (14 * 14 / 13.7). Having power, we can calculate the current strength using the formula I = W / Uwhere icurrent strength Wpower, Uvoltage. The current strength will be equal to 1 A. Having calculated how much it took the wire to heat the brushes, you can calculate the current strength to select the wire cross section according to the indicated principle (it is most convenient to use ready-made tables to select the cross section according to the current strength). We strongly recommend that you read the article on the correct choice of fuses, it is also important to choose a section of wires with a small margin.

Features of thread installation:

 • the wire must be securely fixed;
 • a nichrome thread does not have insulation, therefore, touching two or more points of the wire to metal elements is unacceptable - this will lead to a short circuit;
 • in places where the thread peeks out of the brush, insulation must be put on to compensate for temperature deformation;
 • since the junction of the thread and wires becomes extremely rigid, they must be stationary. This will allow the soldering spots not to break off during the work of the wipers.

In the network you can find photo reports of the production of heating for the Khors brushes. We did not describe the exact sequence of actions, since the designs of wipers of various types will differ.

MGTF WIRE

To make a heating element, drive in two small cloves at a distance equal to the installation location of the heater in the wiper. Wrap the nails, as shown in the photo, after which the element can be installed under the casing of the frameless brush. Note that the ends of the MGTF wire should be in the middle of the wipers. For better temperature distribution, the resulting loop can be wrapped with foil. For the conclusion of the wires, most likely, you will have to make holes in the housing or fasteners.

POWER DIAGRAM

Heated brushes are connected via a 4-pin relay. The greatest heating will be with parallel connection. It is better to take the power + for heating supply directly from the battery, positioning the fuse as close to the battery as possible. The control + relay can be taken from the power plus, then pressing the button in the passenger compartment should feed - to the second control output of the relay.

In the diagram below, the control + is taken from the cigarette lighter in the cabin, and the power and control are shorted to ground. This connection allows you to realize the backlight of the button to turn on the wipers heating.

Possible connection option

All motorists are well aware that a lot depends on the degree of purity and transparency. First of all, traffic safety. In the warm season, it is very simple to clean the windshield - just turn on the wipers, which in a fairly short time will cope with the task.

But what to do in the winter, when this most important part of the vehicle can be covered with a sufficiently strong crust of ice? Running around with a hot kettle to make at least a little visible area in front of? But now is not the twentieth century, so there are several ways to solve the problem:

 • Apply special scrapers.
 • Use a variety of synthetic gels.
 • Install a heating system for the wiper area on your car.

The first and second option today is no longer relevant enough, since it does not solve two problems: saving time and physical strength. In the first case, you will have to spend your own energy to work with a scraper. In the second - to stand and watch how the gel begins to destroy the ice crust on the windshield. It’s much easier and more comfortable to sit inside the car and watch how the heated wipers do their job perfectly.

Unfortunately, you will have to pay for high-quality heating of the wipers. Sometimes - quite a lot. It does not matter, since there is the possibility of making a system for heating the wiper area with your own hands.

How to make do-it-yourself wipers heating?

For the independent production of heating the wipers, you need to, like it or not, purchase some consumables: a tape for the HOST brand (recommended), a nichrome wire with a diameter of 0.3 mm. Therefore, unfortunately, some expenses cannot be dispensed with even in this case.

After completing the purchase process, you can proceed with the manufacture of heated car wipers. Initially, it is necessary to make heating elements for janitors:

 • The nichrome wire is cut so that its length exceeds the size of car wipers at least twice, and also had a margin of about 200 mm.
 • The product must completely repeat all the bends of the cleaning system.
 • To align the wire, one edge is fixed by hand, the other is pulled out with ordinary pliers.

Next stage. Another piece of wire is measured - based on the length of the wiper plus 100 mm. Further - the product bends so that its ends do not coincide a little. The longer end is inserted into the hollow space of the gum used, and the short end is pierced obliquely. Using the previously used pliers, the metal rod is completely immersed in rubber. This work will take time and patience. The protruding ends are formed in the form of loops, with mandatory insulation.

The next step in the creation of heated wipers:

 1. Two small holes are made in the plastic profile.
 2. The ends of the future heating elements of the wipers are inserted into the profile - in the finished holes.
 3. The external parts of the wire are treated with a soldering iron - using soldering acid.
 4. Using the same tool, the wiring is soldered.
 5. The “mother” connector is powered by the vehicle.
 6. For the operation of the heated wiper system, a button is installed that allows you to control the resulting structure.

The control button for heating the windshield zone is recommended to be combined with

Thinking about buying heated wipers and the necessary elements to connect them is long before the onset of cold weather. For this is a very useful option that does not allow drops of water on the wipers to turn into ice, which greatly complicates the cleaning of glass.

As practice shows, with a high speed of movement of a car, even a heater turned on at maximum power and the activated option of heating the wiper area does not give the desired effect. Therefore, the brushes must be heated “from the inside”.

There are companies involved in the manufacture of such heating, and now there are a lot, in almost every big city you can easily use their services.

But you can install the wipers with heating and do it yourself, the main thing is to strictly adhere to the installation instructions.

Choosing quality heated wipers

Of the many available offers on the market, Burner and Street did not offer bad options, in which the power connectors were not satisfactory, and the wires did not hang from the wiper blades, shuffling around the glass.

Other advantages of these wipers are ease of installation and the choice of brush lengths, the ability to install "winter wipers" on almost any car model, a high level of brush reliability, the cleaning cloth does not cool down and does not change properties over time, the brushes fit snugly on the glass without leaving it on it divorces.

We assemble the structure according to the described scheme

Installation of heated wipers according to the scheme proposed by the manufacturer with connection to the cigarette lighter socket takes very little time (15 minutes).

However, this connection method can detect minuses, namely:

Firstly, a lot of wires “hang out” in the cabin, and the way to connect to the cigarette lighter is not very convenient.

Secondly, the wires offered by the manufacturer are of a very small cross section: they are similar to an automobile telephone charging wire in which the current strength is not more than 0.5 A. We need 5-6 A.

The wire heats up, and the voltage loss on it reaches 2 V. There are no particular complaints about the efficiency of the wipers, however, this does not occur, but this must be taken into account.

In general, the described connection method is ideal for new machines under warranty - so as not to lose this warranty. We recommend that other motorists choose a different solution to the problem.

Alternative connection option

We install wipers with our own heating, for this we will need to buy some more details.

In addition to the need for wires of a much larger cross section, the logic of turning on / off heating also causes difficulties.

The trial and error method leads to an ideal circuit, similar to turning on / off the rear fog lights.

To do this, you will need to buy additional details: keys for the relay control of the rear fog lights and the health of the warning lights.

You can turn on the device by briefly pressing the key with the ignition on, pressing again will turn off the device. When the ignition is turned off at the moment the mechanism is operating, it will turn off and work again when the ignition is repeated after pressing the button.

Install the mechanism on the car

The key, which includes heating, is mounted on the dashboard on the right, which provides convenience.

Then the wire connecting the button and the relay is mounted. It is better to install the relay under the hood, which means that the wire should be long enough. Insulate the wires to prevent a short circuit.

We put the relay on the bracket of the diagnostic connector. The wiring harness from the button is dragged through the "rubber band" there. Next, we connect all the elements according to the scheme, ending with a “+” wire. A 10 A fuse is required in the circuit.

It is better to buy a thicker cable than the standard cable type ШВВП 1,5. We connect to the plus relay, connect the second end to the battery, then connect it to the fuse. Installation of the device is successfully completed!

Of course, if you never installed heated wipers or other additional devices, for example, did not
