Is it possible to paint the wallpaper with acrylic paint. DIY wallpaper and wall painting with water-based paint, do-it-yourself video. What is needed for painting

Hello everyone!
For a long time I was tormented by the question whether it is possible to paint old paper wallpapers? She scratched the posts: whoever writes is possible, who is not - they are swollen and disappear, who advised new ones to stick.

Wallpaper in the kitchen - pasted 3 years ago, in some places very dirty, especially in the refrigerator area and where the telly hung. The wallpaper is vinyl, professionally glued, butt, tight. I am not going to repair the ceiling, ceiling molding and floor skirting so far in the near future. But the wallpaper was very annoying, the color does not fit my favorite sofa)))). In terms of money and time, painting has won in relation to plywood.
I bought 2 cans of acrylic paint for 2.5 kg of the Polish brand DEKORAL, 300 r per can. one color - honey, the second - almond, to match the skin color of the sofa, roller, brush, and in 1 day the kitchen was repainted. I didn’t process the wallpaper, someone advised water-repellent impregnation, etc. I had no time to bother with this. I decided - if they fall away, then okay, but I will not spend money on removing old ones. The only thing was that she walked with a vacuum cleaner to clean it from dust, and wiped it with a well wrung out damp cloth. I glued skirting board and molding with masking tape so as not to get dirty and go! Drying time 2 hours, painted 2 times. The second time 2 hours after the drying of the first layer.

*** At first I thought to stick new wallpapers, but when the foreman came and began to count the work - remove the baseboard, dismantle the ceiling moldings, remove the old wallpaper, remove the radiator, i.e. to drain the water from the system, remove the wooden overlay of the arch, glue the new wallpaper + new ceiling to buy and paste, put the radiator and the wooden arch back - it would also be done for at least a week, I felt bad, and I didn’t even ask for the price - I realized that NOT NOW!

*** Actually, painting the wallpaper is pretty simple, but you need to do this carefully. Paper wallpapers do not tolerate moisture, they easily absorb paint, can move away from the walls and fall off. To prevent this from happening, you need to use a roller with a small pile.

During painting, our old wallpaper in one place was slightly swollen and it turned out to be like a bubble, but after drying it all came back, nothing peeled off anywhere and didn’t fall off.
After the paint has dried, they decided that it is worth applying a second coat of paint to get a more even color.
The wallpaper was repainted - nothing fell out either. After we painted the old wallpaper, we got light walls (and by the way, in this form the room already looked better), and on the walls you can make any drawings on your own.

Step by step instructions for painting paper wallpaper
Before starting work, it is necessary to determine the appropriate type of coloring composition.

If planned painting wallpaper in the kitchen or in the hallway, then it is better to opt for acrylic paint. It is wear-resistant, easy to clean, does not accumulate dust and other impurities on the surface, is characterized by high elasticity and durability.
For painting paper wallpapers in the bedroom, hallway, children's room it is better to choose a water-based paint. Its chemical composition is completely safe for health, it does not have a sharp specific smell, provides a bright and saturated color, and is characterized by high vapor permeability.

Is it possible to paint paper wallpapers with oil paint, and how?Work on painting the wallpaper with an oil coating does not differ in the technology of painting with acrylic or water-based composition.
Preparation of the room before painting paper wallpaper:
** take out excess objects and provide easy access to the walls;
** remove dust and cobwebs from the surface of the wallpaper. This is best done with a vacuum cleaner or a damp cloth;
** glue the wallpaper with glue if they do not fit snugly against the wall;
** gloss over defects and scratches with mastic;
** after drying the mastic, carefully treat the surface with sandpaper;
** Apply primer to the putty spots with a brush to improve adhesion.

Painting technology
1
Mix the entire volume of paint in one container to obtain a uniform saturated color.
2
Start painting from the upper left corner of the room with respect to the door.
3
Paint corners, places near window and doorways, baseboards and ceiling with a brush; the rest of the surface is a roller.
How to paint wallpaper

A few years ago, residents of a large country were forced to be content with those wallpapers that they were offered in construction and hardware stores. But time passed, production technologies changed, modern paper replaces ordinary paper wallpaper. People have the opportunity to paint the wallpaper in a color suitable for the design.

Which can be painted?

The technology for the production of modern wallpaper involves the use of high quality materials.

But first, it should be noted that ordinary paper wallpapers should not be painted.

Simple wallpapers do not have a special relief. Even if the paper wallpaper is painted, firstly, from the outside it will not look aesthetically pleasing, and secondly, the paper will swell and fall off after a short time.

There are three types of wallpaper for painting:

  • vinyl;
  • cullets;
  • non-woven.

Vinyl wallpapers are made both of paper and non-woven. They can be painted up to ten times. They are used in any premises, for kitchens and children's rooms it is best to choose washable with a pattern.

Cullets are made from natural materials - dolomite, lime and quartz sand. Another component that is part of the composition is soda. All these components are applied on a paper basis. There are two types of cullet: single-layer and two-layer. They withstand more than ten stains. Wear-resistant, so they can decorate the room for several years. Wash with a regular brush and water. Most often they paste over state and office premises.

Non-woven wallpaper is highly durable. They are based on interlining - a material that is made from compressed fibers. Foamed vinyl is applied over the surface, due to which various patterns are obtained. Coloring on a non-woven basis lasts more than one year.

It should be noted that on the market you can also find liquid wallpaper for painting. Liquid wallpaper is a relative novelty among building materials. It is more correct to attribute them to decorative plaster. On sale are found in the form of dry mixtures and diluted concentrates. Dry wallpaper should be diluted in water before application. They consist of safe substances - PVA glue, coloring pigment and base - cellulose flakes. Depending on the colors, silk, dust and sparkles can be added to the composition.

Among the advantages of liquid wallpaper can be noted the fact that they hide the unevenness of the walls, cracks and chips. Under them, mold does not form, they are not colonized by microorganisms. They do not crack or peel off like rolled wallpaper. They do not have joint seams, they create good thermal insulation. Defective places are replaced in a few minutes, no need to re-glue the entire room.

Advantages and disadvantages

As noted earlier, liquid wallpaper does not peel off after painting. The thing is that a diluted solution is applied to the wall, while the drawing can be made with your own hands. The layer of liquid wallpaper contributes to noise reduction, which means that extraneous noise will not get into the room from the side of the entrance or the street. The ease of applying liquid wallpaper allows you to make repairs to any adult, this does not require special skills and knowledge.

Liquid wallpaper has its drawbacks - they can fade under the influence of sunlight, cotton absorbs odors, so in the kitchen you should not decorate the walls with this building material.

The advantages of vinyl, non-woven and fiberglass wallpapers were partially described in the previous section, and of the minuses we can only note their high cost. Unfortunately, even redecorating flies a pretty penny.

When is it better to paint?

After gluing the wallpaper, the plasterers are advised to wait about two days, during which time the wallpaper glue will completely dry, and the wallpaper will hold tight. If you apply the paint on the same day after gluing the wallpaper, then there is a high probability of the appearance of traces and spots.

You should be careful when buying non-woven wallpaper, some of them are not intended for painting.

How to choose a paint?

For good wallpaper to be selected and high-quality paints. You should not save, because dubious products can adversely affect your health. If the family has allergies or small children, it is advisable that at the time of repair they were not in the room.

Today, paints are most often used:

  • alkyd;
  • acrylic;
  • water dispersion.

Alkyd paints are bought for utility rooms - basements, pantries. These paints can harm human and animal health. The oils and resins in their composition can damage even an adult healthy man. But they have a number of advantages. They have high saturation, are indifferent to humidity, do not deteriorate under the influence of ultraviolet radiation.

Their antifungal components do not allow mold to develop on the wallpaper.

Their service life is only five years, they are highly flammable, therefore, their application near an open flame is undesirable. The cost of acrylic paints is very low.

There are no harmful substances in the composition of water-dispersion paints, therefore they are also suitable for urban apartments. A huge selection of colors will allow you to choose a color for any interior.

Acrylic-based water-dispersion-based latex paint is mainly painted on non-woven embossed wallpaper and glass. It dries in a few hours, has no specific odors. It is recommended for painting bedrooms, kitchens and living rooms, but cannot be used in the bathroom.

Water-based latex paint will last for more than one year. Its elasticity is achieved through specially designed substances. In the store, it is found in a universal white color, other colors are obtained when it is diluted immediately before application.

Acrylic paints are suitable for city apartments, country houses and office premises. They buy such paints even for kindergartens. They do not contain harmful chemicals, but the price, respectively, of acrylic paints is high.

Water-based acrylic paint is designed for non-woven wallpaper. It stands out among competitors with its rich colors that do not fade over the years of operation. It can be applied to paper wallpaper and glass.

Acrylic paints are odorless, do not cover the wallpaper with a film, so they “breathe”. And they dry in just one day.

Aqueous emulsion ink does not contain harmful chemical components, therefore it is used in residential premises for commercial and domestic purposes. Wallpaper after painting has moisture resistance, they can be washed, they do not emit a smell. Water-based paint can be used to paint kitchens, bathrooms and pools thanks to the silicone base.

As for liquid wallpaper, their mixtures have certain dyes in advance. Some experts recommend painting the wall before applying liquid wallpaper. For this, oil paint is used. Stains in this case do not appear, the saturation of the shades increases, and the surface is leveled. To make the textured wall stand out against the main background, there is a design solution: before applying liquid wallpaper, paint the walls in bright, exotic colors.

Remember that in those cases when the walls have already been painted in the room, for example, magnetic paint was used, before the next step - wallpapering, you need to “highlight” this place. Otherwise, unpleasant stains will appear under the wallpaper. In order to maintain the magnetization effect, the paint should be applied about five times, and the wallpaper should not be very thick. The next coat of paint is applied only after the previous one dries. Therefore, liquid wallpaper is best suited for magnetic paint.

Now let's talk a little about the features of paints. If the paint is not glossy - it is matte. It is best applied in larger areas. Semi-matte looks great in bedrooms, and glossy paint - in rooms where sunlight allows you to beat the interior.

Semi-gloss paint is well cleaned, it is more advisable to apply it to the kitchen walls, however, like satin paint, it is also moisture resistant.

Using water-based varnish, you can increase the mechanical strength of the wallpaper, their water resistance. But it is worth considering the disadvantages of this event. Shine will “reveal” all the irregularities, the process itself is time-consuming, you need to be patient. Varnish contributes to a change in the basic shade, but at the same time, such wallpapers wash well.

Consumption

Paint consumption will primarily depend on the varieties of wallpaper, and secondly, on the varieties of the paint itself. Paper wallpapers, unlike glass, absorb more moisture, which means that much more paint is required. On average, a liter of acrylic paint is enough for 5 square meters. m. But, if you apply the paint in several layers, this will lead to an increase in consumption.

Before you go to the construction market, you need to make measurements.Balcony blocks and doorways do not need to be considered. If furniture is installed in the room, for example, a wall or wardrobe, which is not planned to be rearranged, then the wall behind this furniture can not be painted - this will significantly save money.

Tools and materials

For applying paint to the wallpaper, it is best to use a roller, this will save time on work and reduce paint consumption. There are several types of rollers; fur and foam rubber are suitable directly for painting. Velor and polyacrylic rollers are used for other tasks.

Masking tape is required for applying various stripes and patterns, thanks to it there will be no gaps, and the picture will be even. By the way, you need to remove it very carefully so as not to tear off with the paint.

The roller is not suitable for painting small parts, so it is best to use a brush. Brushes, like rollers, must be wrung out carefully before application so that uneven layers are not obtained.

Dilute the paint to be in an unnecessary container - in an old plastic bucket or a large container from mayonnaise. After all, after completion of all work, this capacity will need to be thrown out, unfortunately, it is almost impossible to wash it.

A plastic bath is a specially invented device for painting walls. A small amount of paint is poured into the niche, and the upper part of the bath allows you to squeeze out the excess.

For some cases, varnish and color may be needed. About varnish has already been written earlier, and with the help of a color scheme, you can create various colors. Kohler is most suitable for non-woven wallpaper. Adding colors with the desired color to the white paint, you can modify the interior beyond recognition.

Using a stencil, you can apply special drawings, patterns and inscriptions to the wallpaper. “Pictures” are obtained at a highly artistic level even by a person who does not have a professional education in this field.

It is more expedient to use a spray gun for painting large rooms, this saves both expense and time spent on work.

With this tool it is easier to make the surface uniform.

Technology

First of all, it is desirable to prime the walls, and only then to glue the wallpaper. Primed walls will allow the wallpaper to hold for a long time, and in addition, the primer will even the walls. Acrylic or based on PVA glue primer is most suitable for residential premises.

When all the tools have been prepared and the wallpaper has already been pasted, the next stage of repair is to be done - painting them.

Preparation of wallpaper for painting includes the following steps:

  • Dust removal from the surface. For this, a vacuum cleaner or a dry cotton rag, napkin is best suited.
  • Removing glue residue. Especially glue can appear at the joints.

It is desirable to lay cellophane or plastic film on the floor. If you use old newspapers, they can absorb excess paint, and the laminate or linoleum will be stained.

All furniture, household appliances and electronics must be removed from the room. Batteries, ventilation grills and window sills must be protected from paint. Pasted with masking tape and baseboards.

Proper painting of old and "freshly glued" wallpaper on the wall with a roller with your own hands begins with the choice of a tool. It should be remembered that when using a roller with a long pile, the best paint effect is achieved. Such a roller reaches even the most inaccessible places of the decorative layer.

Foam rollers can remove excess paint from the "tops" of the layer. They will not be suitable for painting directly, they will leave bubbles after themselves. For the same purpose, you can use a velor roller.

It is more advisable to make a test before the main painting. To do this, select less visible sections of the wall. You can thus practice the application technique, in strength and uniformity.

Water-dispersion paint is diluted with a small amount of water, while it becomes thinner. This paint is easiest to apply on the wallpaper, and consumption is reduced.

First, with a brush, all the corners, joints between the walls and the ceiling or floor pass, and then the rest of the roller is painted without rest. It is not necessary to squeeze out the roller strongly, the movements should be light and fast. The first layer should be completed before the paint has completely dried, otherwise the transitions and joints will be visible to the eye.

Two layers of paint should be applied to the textured wallpaper. The second layer should be undiluted. The texture helps to hide the unevenness of the walls and low-quality painting, so it should not be violated. No friction, only light application of paint on the wallpaper.

If you work together, then you need to start from the corners. Use a brush to locate sockets and switches. Remember that if you apply paint to an already painted part, then a double layer forms, and in the future these are spots.

The roller should be periodically updated: either get unused, or remove excess pile from the old one. To do this, soapy water is used, the result is fixed in pure water.

The roller is evenly wetted with random movements along the mesh of the plastic bath, excess paint remains in the bath, and not on the wall. It is necessary to roll out until the roller is completely saturated. If this is not done, unpainted parts form on the wall. This procedure must be repeated constantly with a new paint finish, after a while the process will be established and there will be no problems with this.

The painters came up with a special technique for applying paint - W-shaped. A letter is drawn, and then it is painted over and so it is necessary to continue from one corner to another. The main thing is to apply without streaks. But for simplicity, it is enough to apply paint with a roller from the ceiling to the floor.

If you increase the humidity in the room, then the drying process of the paint can be slowed down. Thanks to this, painting can be done in a longer time.

In many cases, tinting is required. Adding the desired tube with color to white paint, we achieve various color schemes. Do not neglect the instructions. If you overdo it, you can completely ruin the shade or complicate the process of repetition.

By the way, the necessary shades can be ordered in specialized stores. Thus, the can with the new paint will always correspond to the previous one, since the color is diluted with color using special factory technologies, and not “by eye”.

The non-woven wallpaper with a complex texture can be painted from the inside, allowing the rolls to soak with paint. The drawing itself will not be painted and will remain in its original color. In the future, with the help of a brush, it can be painted in any color. And vice versa, you can directly paint a relief pattern with an ordinary kitchen sponge. Light taps achieve this effect.

The wallpaper glued on the ceiling is painted using a stepladder and a roller with a large handle. By the way, you can use a spray gun for ceiling work. The easiest to paint is the ceiling cullet. All work begins from the corners, and then the remaining surface is painted with a roller. It is better to apply the paint in two layers, in the first case - parallel to the window, in the second - across.

Although liquid wallpaper can be "freshened" using a can of paint, but after that the wall will become smooth. Lost its texture. Partially removing the material from the wall will no longer work, only final dismantling is possible.

We paint in two colors

Combined to paint a bedroom or living room, not many decide. Some are used to universal colors, others are afraid to spoil the interior with their own hands. And besides, no one will return the money for the mistakes made.

But at the same time, many design decisions provide for a combination of different colors in the room. This can be achieved either by gluing with different wallpapers, or by painting them in different color shades.

Remember that today special methods of combination have been developed.

You can combine:

  • similar colors;
  • making gradient transitions;
  • experimenting with different palettes.

To conceal the transitions, special design solutions were invented. One of them is molding. Moldings are made of safe polymers, they are easily attached not only to the ceiling, but also to the walls. Wooden or gypsum molding is more appropriate to use in rooms where the most prevailing furniture is wood - it can be bedrooms or offices. Polyurethane moldings are moisture resistant and should be installed in kitchens or bathrooms. All moldings are attached to the walls using special glue.

Borders, strips and slats are popular in the design environment - they can be made from both natural and artificial materials. The choice is determined only by the design of the premises and the financial situation of the customer.

But most often for ordinary apartments, masking tape is used. It is easily glued and easily dismantled after painting work. The masking tape costs little money, it is very durable, it can be used with a wide range of temperatures from heat to hot frost.

Let us dwell in more detail on the combined methods of painting wallpaper:

  • The most calling is the method called Accent wall. With this method, not half of the wall is painted in one color, but the other is painted in another. Here we are talking about painting three walls in one color, and the fourth in a different color. Or this method is used for ornamental highlighting of ledges - fireplaces, chimneys and stoves.
  • Horizontal division most often found in urban apartments, especially in cases where the lower part of the wall is stucco. Separation can be both in the center and with a significant margin. The transition is usually decorated with moldings.

If molding is not provided by design, then the transition should be done using masking tape, but it should be removed within an hour after staining.

  • In children's rooms or in rooms intended for children, are often made inserts of geometric shapes. First, the entire wall is painted with the selected color, and figures are marked with the masking tape. The second layer, which will differ in color, is applied after the first has completely dried.

  • A few decades ago, it was popular. gradient coloring method walls. Today, the gradient fashion has returned. You can paint each wall in its own color or make a transition from dark to light. In the second case, at first the wall is painted in one color, and then its part is shaded.
  • Stripes, rhombuses and polka dotsused less often, for their application you can use masking tape or a stencil.

How much can I repaint?

Unfortunately, it often happens that after pasting in the wallpaper room they need to be repainted in a different color. Let's say you didn’t like the color or the interior changed. Or maybe after a certain time the past color just starts to bother. A reasonable question arises whether it is possible to repaint the wallpaper and how many times they can be repainted.

At first, I would like to note that repainting is a popular trend today.

Gone are the days when redecorating implied the obligatory plywood wallpaper. Furniture had to be taken out, old wallpapers to tear off, new ones to stick. It took a lot of time and effort.

Today you can only repaint a certain section of the wall in your favorite color, and that's it - the repair is completed.

Manufacturers have taken care of their customers and produce textured wallpaper, the protrusion of which is sufficient to carry out painting work at least five times. Until the drawing is flush with the paint. Typically, the amount is indicated on the package, there are specimens intended for re-staining more than ten times.

But to save in this case will not work.

Remember that the most ordinary paper wallpaper swells and rolls already on the second painting.

It is important and on what glue they were attached to the wall. If cheap glue was used, then after the wallpaper “gains weight”, they will slide off the wall under their own weight.

It should be borne in mind that matte paints clog the picture, in contrast to glossy ones, which, on the contrary, emphasize it. It is advisable to use water-based paint, it does not create crusts.

When repainting, you can experiment with the color scheme, for example, a combination of dark blue colors with white paint - you get a pastel color. And when mixing yellow and blue paint leaves a green tint. If you mix yellow and red - orange.

Bright or color combinations are obtained by mixing green and red colors with white paint. You can experiment with the children, as long as you don’t forget what and what was mixed, in order to repeat this color in the future.

Interior Design Options

Any city apartment begins with a corridor. Even if guests come in very rarely, a postman, a person who checks the counters, or a social worker at least once a month rings the doorbell. Therefore, comfort should be created in the hallway, and wallpaper plays a very important role in this.

From a design point of view in the corridor it is best to use light-colored paint, while the room will not look like a closet. Wall lights and a glossy floor complement the composition.

The second most important, and therefore no less important, is in the apartment living room. Here, guests and households spend most of their time. Have a rest, tea and night. Therefore, this room needs a combination of warm, soothing colors. If the living room is predominantly white - furniture, appliances and electronics, then it is more advisable to paint the wallpaper in bright colors.

In studio apartments experts advise maintaining a unified design of the kitchen and living room. This combination visually expands the room.

  • Concerning the kitchen, then in this room it is best to stick washable wallpaper. Even after heavy pollution with droplets of fat or smoke - they are very easy to return to their original form. And the paint should be used one that does not absorb odors.
  • Bedroom- This is a secluded room, in it people are mostly only at night. If a married couple likes to sleep before dinner, it is best to give preference to dark shades. And if - to rise neither light nor dawn - light. Well-known fact: dark colors without gloss absorb light.

  • Original children's room stands out against the background of the entire apartment. Such a place is not ashamed to show to relatives and strangers. Children in such a room will always find something to do with themselves in the daytime, and calmly fall asleep in the evening. Decorative painting in the apartment brings a certain charm. With its help, you can emphasize the design feature and hide the defects and irregularities of the walls.
  • In the old days about sticking wallpaper in bathroom, you could not even dream. The wallpapers themselves did not stay in this humid room, not to mention painting them. They turned yellow, fell off after a short time, but, worst of all, a fungus could form under them. And to bring it out is very difficult.

In today's century of high technology, manufacturers sell high-quality wallpapers and special paints for rooms with high humidity. You can habitually paint the bathroom in blue, or you can go for an experiment and paint in a combined way.

  • In a country house, especially on the upper floors, wallpaper can be glued, including on the ceiling. Such a transition visually raises the height of the room, hides uneven joints and plays up unsightly corners.
  • In office or municipal officesUsing wallpaper for painting, you can significantly save on subsequent repairs.

The times when it was necessary to re-wallpaper every two years have sunk into oblivion. Today it’s enough to glue the wallpaper once for painting, and you can change their color as many times as you like. At least five, at least ten. The main thing is only to remember that for this you need to buy high-quality building materials.

For how to properly color the wallpaper, see the next video.

No matter how beautiful your favorite wallpapers may be, sooner or later their color will fade or just get tired. Agree, from year to year, to observe the same design, shade, - over time, everything begins to lead any person into gloom. There is an urgent need to change something, but how to modify the aged wallpaper without unnecessary waste and effort? To do this, apply their painting. But the question is: is it possible to paint the usual coating in general, or are only materials specially designed for this suitable?

Traditional wallcoverings include paper wallpapers. They can be found in almost every apartment. If you suddenly wanted to update them, but don’t buy new ones or spend days and nights spent gluing new rolled materials, be careful. Experts say that painting ordinary wallpapers is better not worth it. Double-layer, single-layer wall-paper - this type of wall covering can suffer from paint. However, a well-organized process will refresh the long-faded colors in your home. It is necessary to study the basic requirements.

It is possible to take up painting the wallpaper only if they do not have serious damage. It is important that the material is not peeled off the wall, on the contrary, it should fit snugly against it, otherwise it makes no sense to buy a paint composition.

Special requirements are put forward to the level of paint quality. Among its basic characteristics should be present:

  • strength. Conventional need to be protected from various mechanical damage;
  • environmental friendliness. If the composition of the coloring mixture contains toxic elements, the paper coating may not survive such a painting;
  • durability. Paint should retain color for a long time. It is equally important to protect the coating from the harmful effects of water - choose a composition that can cope with this.

It is possible to paint the old coating, but this is done exclusively with water-based paint. This category includes latex coloring composition. The advantage of its use is the ability to strengthen even ordinary paper coating. They become durable, can withstand further exposure to water. Feel free to wash the wall covering after using this material. Latex based acrylic is another popular product. The usual coating after painting with this material acquires a texture and is less susceptible to corrosion. You can paint them with water-based acrylic paint. Then the room does not have a feeling of mustiness and steam, and the composition itself dries quickly. The most budget option is a water emulsion. It has no smell, dries instantly, however, it does not differ in water-repellent properties.

Liquid wallpaper

Sooner or later, painting liquid wallpaper may also be needed. Over time, stains and contaminants appear on the liquid wallpaper, which can not always be removed. Painting is the best way out. Choose a high-quality coloring composition and get to work. The choice of shades is so diverse that you can safely experiment. Buy either ready-made paint, or a base and colorants: so, you yourself derive a beautiful shade of color for liquid wallpaper. Whether it is bright and saturated or, conversely, muffled, it depends entirely on you.

Before deciding to paint liquid wallpaper, pay attention to one key nuance: this material is silky and very soft to the touch. But at the end of painting liquid wallpaper, texture features are lost, you get a monophonic coating, and even quite hard. Water-based coloring compounds are suitable: latex, acrylic, water-based, and also silicone. The latest variety of paint appeared on the modern market of finishing materials relatively recently. After applying it, you need to wash the liquid wallpaper without any fears. However, the cost of such coverage is much higher.

Vinyl and non-woven wallpaper

Vinyl wallpaper is based on plain paper, but compared to the standard coating, this product has good water-repellent properties. Foamed vinyl is painted primarily. The non-woven specimen is also really painted, it is durable and can withstand mechanical stress. It is possible to paint such a coating several times: do not be afraid to undertake such a procedure again, the non-woven wall covering will not suffer from repeated painting.

To paint vinyl wallpaper, use a regular roller, and make a picture with brushes. Don’t worry, if you didn’t have a talent for drawing: bought stencils are suitable as an alternative to hand designs, and here you can give free rein to your imagination. Use the following advice: start painting in inconspicuous places (behind cabinets, sofas). Grind your skills - and forth, to the barricades.

Paper wallpaper

For paper wallpapers, almost any coloring composition is suitable. The main thing is not to use oily liquids. The best choice - water-based, acrylic, latex paint. The advantage of painting paper wallpapers lies in the fact that, if desired, you can mix coloring liquids, trying to achieve the desired shade. Choose a quality composition - and it will not exude terrible smells, will dry quickly and will not flow. Remember: immediately before the procedure it is worth applying a primer. It will prevent the wall covering from getting wet, and you can safely paint the surface. After painting the walls, wait until the composition dries, and then, if necessary, apply a second coat.

What wallpaper can be painted with a water-based emulsion?

The choice of water-based paint for wallpaper is dictated primarily by its price. Mixtures on a latex or polyvinyl acetate basis are also suitable for wallpaper for painting, but they cost a little more. Aqueous emulsion dye has long been known to residents of Russia, familiar and relatively cheap. Among its other advantages:

  • the ability to tint the white base in any shade;
  • resistance of the painted surface to fading and abrasion;
  • ease of maintenance (can be wiped with a damp cloth to remove dirt);
  • environmental friendliness;
  • lack of a pungent smell when applied.

Quality material has good hiding power. You can apply only 1 layer of water emulsion and get an excellent result when painting wallpaper. But for the perfect effect, you should paint the wall twice, having dried the first coating layer for the time specified by the paint manufacturer.

Not all wallpapers are suitable for coloring. Typically, materials for painting have the appropriate markings and textured plain surface. But even in this case, for working with aqueous emulsion (acrylic) compositions, it is better to understand in advance which wallpapers you can paint:

  1. Paper can withstand water treatment quite satisfactorily. Paint well covers their surface, slightly impregnating the base. As a result, painted walls retain an attractive appearance for a long time. Apply paint to dry wallpaper with a paint roller.
  2. Vinyl wallpapers for painting with a water emulsion need to be selected on a non-woven basis. Coating is carried out similarly - by roller on a dry texture.
  3. Fiberglass varieties will also look ideal. These painted wallpapers are capable of holding a water-based dye for a long time. Fiberglass can be repainted if you want to change the color scheme in the room. The number of stains is indicated on the package.

When painting relief varieties, a water emulsion should be applied in several layers.

How to prepare for work?

Before painting the wallpaper with water-based paint, you need to prepare all the necessary materials. To work, you will need the following:

  • paint roller (long pile);
  • velor roller (for embossed wallpaper);
  • flat brush with a width of 6-7 cm;
  • cuvette for the roller;
  • masking tape;
  • water-based paint (white base);
  • color.

You can enchant bought white paint right in the store. In large firms, there is a service for computer selection of shade. The specialist will calculate the amount of dye needed to obtain a suitable color. The information will be saved in the program memory: by the shade number it will be possible to order an additional volume of the same color if repairs are required or there is not enough material.

If the wallpaper is already pasted and repainted, then before starting work, wipe the surface with a damp cloth. This will help remove dust and other contaminants that may leave streaks on a new coating layer or prevent the paint from lying evenly (grease stains). The cleaned surface must be dried within 1-2 hours, and then proceed to painting the walls.

How to paint different types of wallpaper?

New wallpaper must be well dried before painting. This usually takes 24-48 hours after sticking them to the walls. If the repair was made more than 2-3 days ago, then you can start painting at any time.

The biggest concern is paper coating. But with accurate work with the roller, even this fragile material will not suffer. When painting paper wallpapers, you can use the non-contact method: using a spray gun.

The first stage is painting the corners of the room, the places where the walls adjoin the ceiling or baseboard. If it is possible to remove the baseboard, sockets, decorative slopes of the doors, then it is better to do this before painting the walls. But in old buildings you will have to paste over the edges of these interior parts with masking tape. Such a measure will protect the surface of the parts from water-based paint, which is more difficult to wash off after drying.

You need to paint over difficult places with a soft paint brush, not trying to press hard on it. Walls near doorways, corners, sockets and other ledges should be manually painted over a width of about 5 cm. Without waiting for the paint to dry, proceed to the next step:

  1. Pour some dye into the cuvette and roll it on the ribbed surface with a roller to saturate the pile well.
  2. Start painting from the middle of a small area in the upper corner of the wall. Move from the center to the edges, capturing part of the pre-painted stripes.
  3. When the paint runs dry, roll it several times over the emulsion poured into the cuvette. Continue to work in the specified sequence.

It is necessary to paint 1 wall in 1 step, not allowing the paint to dry on the edges of adjacent sections. When applying the emulsion to a new area, it is necessary to capture with a roller 1-2 cm of an already painted surface. So the paint will lie in an even continuous layer.

How to paint non-woven and vinyl?

Non-woven wallpaper (with or without vinyl coating) can be painted before gluing to the wall. Staining is made from the inside out. In this case, the paint impregnates the loose material, speaking on the front side.

This method of staining is good in that the wallpaper can be wiped with a damp sponge, without risking to wash off the paint. A transparent vinyl layer on the surface will protect the non-woven backing. Vinyl-coated wallpapers are moisture resistant and can be used in the kitchen or bathroom.

Foamed vinyl coating will not give the opportunity to paint the wallpaper before gluing. Embossed trellis can be painted in the usual way, using a roller with a long pile. In this case, the paint will fall into the hollows of the embossed pattern.

Fiberglass Wallpaper

They are best for staining. To highlight the relief, coloring can be done in several layers:

  • apply 2 layers of base paint of the desired shade;
  • having dried the base, highlight the protruding parts of the picture with a velor roller in a different color.

Shades for such coloring are chosen to taste. You can maintain the pattern in a single color scheme, but contrasting shades look no less impressive.

Fiberglass wallpaper can be repainted up to 10 times. This makes repairs easy and economical. If you want to refresh the interior, you can very quickly cope with the task by repainting part of the surface or highlighting one wall.

You can even paint ordinary non-woven and thick paper wallpapers that are not intended for this. But on vinyl film the paint will hold worse, so when choosing you should pay attention to the labeling of wallpaper.

Wallpaper for painting

Today, such a thing as paper wallpaper for painting is not surprising. They can be freely found in the market or in construction stores. The main difference is the lack of paint on the surface. The factory, as it were, enables the buyer to independently choose and apply the color they like to the wallpaper.

Naturally, this option of paper wallpaper is much cheaper, but good paint "compensates" for this. Such a canvas has 2 advantages: a long service life and the ability to replace colors as desired.

Varieties of wallpaper for painting

Paper-based wallpaper

Among all species are most popular. This is due to the fact that they can be used even on walls with an uneven surface. Most brands produce paper wallpapers, consisting of 2 layers, each of which is treated with a special substance that increases the life of the canvas.

Coarse fiber wallpaper is very popular. Their secret is that wood shavings are placed between the two layers. This combination forms an interesting texture of the surface of the wallpaper without any pattern.

If you use this canvas to glue the room and the ceiling, then after drying, the effect of a seamless pattern will be created. Due to the lack of complex images, the gluing process is extremely simple - no need to select pictures.

Non-woven wallpaper for painting

They are made of special fiber, which is pressed into pieces. This structure is extremely durable and allows you to close various deformations or damage on the walls.

On the one hand, the canvas turns out to be perfectly even, on the other - a pattern is applied to it using foamed vinyl. It looks, of course, beautiful, but in practice it is very fragile. The entire relief of the wallpaper can be removed with a fingernail with little or no effort. Painting such a surface significantly increases strength.

Non-woven wallpaper is quite simple to glue, in fact, like paper, the only difference is that the glue base must be applied to the wall.

Cullet

The manufacturing process is significantly different from the previous 2. The paper base is combined with fiberglass and impregnated with a substance that makes them fire resistant.

You can find paintings with and without drawings, the material allows you to change the texture of the surface in any direction. They have an original appearance and look very organic on the wall. For gluing, you must use special glue.

What is needed for painting

The list of the most necessary things for painting paper wallpapers is practically no different from other similar works. The first thing you need to pay attention to is paint. Quality will depend on it.

Also required are brushes and a roller. To simplify the work, it is better to have these tools of different sizes, especially if the room is irregular in shape or has a large number of “difficult” places, for example, windows, corners, decor elements and so on.

To exclude the possibility of paint on the skirting board, you can purchase a mounting tape. It will take quite a bit of time to paste over the entire perimeter, but this will save from further washing the surface of the plinth.

Surface preparation

If possible, then all the furniture and in general everything that can be taken away from the room. Such piles will only interfere, besides paint can get on them. If there is no way to make it, then it is necessary to cover everything with plastic wrap. If it is not, then it is worth purchasing, in the future it will definitely come in handy on the farm.

Despite the outwardly strong wallpaper, this unit can capture part of the canvas. Almost all old vacuum cleaners have the opportunity to reduce the suction force with a special hole on the handle.

In some situations, there are small areas of peeled off wallpaper and you don’t feel like re-sticking the whole room because of them. In this case, you can either glue this area, or carefully cut with scissors.

Paint selection

This stage must be taken very responsibly, because there is a huge variety of colors that are completely different in their characteristics. For example, based on their appearance, they are divided into:

  • glossy
  • semi-gloss
  • satin
  • matte
  • semi-matt.

Basically, you should choose a certain type of paint, based on the illumination of the room and surface. For example, matte paint will look great in large rooms, but semi-gloss can be used for the kitchen. On the one hand, it is well washed, which is especially important in conditions of constant cooking, on the other hand, such a surface perfectly reflects light.

What to consider when choosing paint for paper wallpaper?

  • Will it be visible after being overlaid on another?
  • Can I wash it?
  • What is its resistance to light?
  • How long does it take to dry completely?
  • Are there any harmful impurities?

Typically, this information is written on the etiquette with paint, but if it is not available or there are difficulties with the search, it is better to contact a specialist for advice. For paper wallpaper, water-based paint is usually used, it may differ in the origin of the components.

Experts prefer to use acrylic paints, because they have the most suitable qualities. Of them:

  • a set of shades and colors,
  • abrasion resistance
  • vapor permeability
  • waterproofing.

Using this paint can be painted even in high humidity. If the budget does not allow, as an option, use a water-based paint with a PVA base. Other species will not work, because you have to pay with quality for a low price.

Some craftsmen use special formulations with latex-based binders. The surface is a nice matte with good resistance to moisture. On the other hand, such a paint has a weaker resistance to abrasion.

What to paint

The easiest and most convenient option is a paint roller.

Foam for painting paper wallpapers is not suitable. This is due to the fact that it periodically slips and a shiny, well-marked trace forms on this place after drying.

On the other hand, if the wallpaper has some kind of pattern, then the foam roller will simply be missing in the recesses. Experts recommend using only a special bath as a container for paint. No bucket or can replace it.

Paint is poured into the lower compartment, then the roller is well-fanned and wiped on the upper part of the tray. If this is not done, then the paint, instead of getting on the wallpaper, will be on the floor. In hard to reach places you can use narrow brushes or a brush.

What can be painted?

The answer to the question of whether it is possible to paint the wallpaper depends on what the walls are glued to. You can change the color of the walls in this way if they are:

  • paper;
  • non-woven;
  • silk plaster.

Important! There are special wallpapers for painting - there are no problems with them, they are designed for this. The interlining is beautifully painted, while you can paint both the wallpaper itself and the wall under them. Silk plaster can be removed, and with the help of other dye and all kinds of additives to get a new color and texture, and then again cover it with walls.

There are coatings that do not make sense in the usual way:

  • textile panels;
  • cullet.

In these cases, other technologies are used.

Important! As for vinyl-based coatings, painting them is harder than gluing. The easiest way is to apply paint to the paper.

Is it possible to color the wallpaper if they are torn?

A very important question: when exactly does it make sense to paint paper wallpapers? Paper is a fairly cheap material, however, it has a number of unpleasant properties:

  • fade;
  • becomes covered with spots that are poorly rubbed;
  • torn;
  • if the repair is not done very well, it is separated from the walls without your participation.

If the wallpaper holds well, but faded - they can be painted. As well as when the spots appeared on the wall - greasy, from a felt-tip pen, etc.

Important! Do not be afraid that they will appear on a new coating, you will still be priming the wall.

Torn wallpaper can also be covered with paint, but it all depends on how serious the damage is. If these are just scratches, cuts or small scraps behind, you can safely go to the store for paint. But if the coating was poorly glued and leaves by itself, it is easier and cheaper to replace it.

What do you need?

Having received a positive answer to the question whether it is possible to paint ordinary wallpaper with paint, think what you need for this:

  • the paint itself;
  • priming;
  • masking tape;
  • roller;
  • narrow and wide brushes;
  • several meters of plastic film.

Primer, masking tape, film:

  • Soil will provide better adhesion of the paint to the surface. In addition, paper has the ability to absorb moisture, and water, in turn, dissolves the glue. So without water-repellent soil, all your work will go down the drain - just painted sheets will perfectly separate from the wall.
  • Masking tape is necessary to protect the skirting board and other parts that should not fall on it. You can buy it at any hardware store.
  • Take care not to get dirty floors and furniture that cannot be taken out. They must be covered with plastic wrap (for example, for greenhouses).

Brushes and rollers

And why brushes of different widths? Very simple - you have to paint over corners and places near sockets or switches. In a word, a wide brush or a roller alone cannot be dispensed with.

You can find on sale several types of rollers with different pile lengths. Which one to choose to paint the old wallpaper - depends on the quality of the coating on the walls:

  • if they are smooth, the pile should be short;
  • if textured - long.

How to color paper wallpaper?

It is very important to choose the right paint. The first rule that should be followed - it should be for interior decoration, and not for facades.

Important! You should not use oil paints for a room - of course, once the rooms were finished exclusively with them, but simply because there were no others.

Surface quality

Now you can see on the shelves paints that give different types of surfaces:

  • glossy;
  • semi-gloss;
  • satin;
  • matte;
  • semi-matte.

Important! Which option to choose depends on the purpose of the room, lighting and size:

  • Matte walls are more suitable for a large living room or bedroom with large windows.
  • It is better to paint a small kitchenette with glossy paint - it will appear larger and brighter.

Operational characteristics

Choosing a finishing material in order to color the old wallpaper, it is necessary to focus on its other qualities:

  • Resistance to light. If the paint burns out very soon, you will have to do a new repair soon. So try to choose one that does not change color too quickly when exposed to sunlight.
  • Resistance to mechanical stress. The less sensitive the coating to mechanical stress, the better. In principle, all interior paints give a solid surface that is difficult to scratch, but still do not forget to find out from the consultant.
  • Transparency. Pay particular attention to a feature such as transparency. The paint with which the walls are already covered should not shine through a new layer, otherwise - you risk getting the walls of the wrong shade you want.
  • Environmental friendliness. Finishing materials that decorate the interior of apartments or houses should not emit harmful substances. It is advisable that they do not react at all with the environment.
  • Moisture resistance. Resistance to moisture is important so that surfaces can be washed without severe consequences for them.
  • Drying time. The time it takes to dry completely depends on how quickly you can repair.

Types of paints

Paints that can be used to paint paper wallpapers come in different ways:

  • alkyd;
  • one;
  • latex.

Alkyd paints

Alkyd compounds adhere well to the paper and form a protective film that allows you to wash the walls with any detergents. The undoubted advantages include the fact that the composition always has antifungal supplements and antiseptics.

However, they have some very significant drawbacks that make such a paint more suitable for glass-walled than paper-based ones:

  • walls do not “breathe”;
  • the texture of the wallpaper is lost;
  • serve only about five years;
  • contain toxic substances;
  • are burning.

Important! Alkyd dyes are used mainly for non-residential premises, where, in addition, there is little danger of fire.

Water and latex based paints

Is it possible to paint paper wallpapers with water-based paint? It is possible and even necessary if you have already decided to take up this lesson. In addition to the low price, a water emulsion has a lot of useful properties:

  • does not smell;
  • dries quickly;
  • does not contain harmful substances, respectively - does not emit them when the coating is destroyed;
  • not sensitive to mechanical stress;
  • passes air;
  • does not react with the environment.

Important! Since water-based paints let air through, the fungus does not settle on paper. Surfaces finished with such material are easy to clean, and aggressive detergents are usually not needed.

Types of water-based paints

Water-based paints come in two forms:

  • latex-based acrylics;
  • water based acrylic.

Both are suitable for decoration of premises.

Latex

Latex formulations do not allow paper to get wet and fall off walls. You can wash them with any detergents. You can paint both smooth and textured surfaces, and the texture is preserved.

Latex-based acrylic paints are the most popular type of decoration materials. They perfectly protect the paper coating from mechanical stress, and excellently maintain relief.

Water

A lot of positive properties of acrylic paints based on water:

  • do not smell;
  • dry very quickly;
  • let air through;
  • at work does not form smudges.

What to give preference to?

When choosing one or another composition, it is necessary to take into account the type of surface:

  • Water-based acrylics are more suitable for non-woven surfaces.
  • For paper, it is better to choose latex.

Important! An important condition for the popularity of these paints is the low price. They do not contain expensive solvents, which makes such materials available to most.

In addition, the choice of such paints in stores is quite wide, and if desired, you can order any suitable shade, or even make it yourself by taking a white water emulsion and the corresponding color. This allows you to get original color schemes.

Cooking the wall

Before you paint the usual wallpaper, you need to tidy up the wall. The procedure is quite ordinary, and perhaps even simpler than preparing for gluing new wallpapers:

  1. First of all, take out all the furniture that can be taken out of the room.
  2. Move the remaining one away from the walls, cover with plastic wrap.
  3. Remove dust from the wallpaper in any suitable way, best with a vacuum cleaner, but you can also use a soft cloth.
  4. If possible, get rid of stains - they, of course, will go under the paint, but it is better if the surface is as uniform as possible.
  5. Cover the baseboard with masking tape - you can do with a wide adhesive tape, but it is not very convenient.
  6. If somewhere the pieces of wallpaper have moved away from the walls, stick them or remove them.
  7. If it doesn’t stick very smoothly, sand the area with a fine sandpaper.

Important! It is necessary to remove not only dust, but also cobwebs, if any.

Primer

After the walls are prepared, you need to apply soil. This is a fairly simple procedure, familiar to anyone who has ever done repairs. The compositions may be different.

For coloring paper wallpaper suitable, for example, soil based on PVA. Water-based paint lays on it just perfectly. The most important thing is to let the wall dry completely. In this case, starting work a little later than planned is much more useful than hurrying. You need to wait at least a day.

Important! When applying the soil, the room should be completely closed, it is impossible to ventilate the room until the composition is completely dry.

Cooking paint

Each jar is accompanied by instructions, and it is best to read it carefully. But there are a few general considerations to consider:

  1. The paint must be mixed until the mass becomes homogeneous.
  2. Kohler is best added not by ourselves, but ask a consultant to do this at a hardware store.

Apply paint

Well, everything is ready, you can proceed to the final stage - directly painting the old wallpaper.

Important! If you do not have much experience in painting, try first to paint the sections of the walls where the cabinets and the sofa will stand - when you put everything in place, these pieces will not be noticeable, and you can practice.

But it is better to adhere to this order:

  1. Start painting on top with large horizontal strokes going in the same direction.
  2. Apply the paint evenly, without spaces, in an even layer.
  3. After the entire surface is painted, paint over the corners, areas adjacent to the baseboard - it is more convenient to do this with a thin brush.
  4. Wait 3-4 hours.
  5. Apply another coat.

Important! To check how you coped with your task, carefully inspect the wall, holding a bright lamp to it. If the surface is flat, without streaks, drops and places where the old coating comes out - everything is in order. If there are defects, paint over them or apply another layer.

About painting vinyl wallpaper

Can be painted or not

I must say that there are special vinyl wallpapers for sale on sale, i.e. the question of painting this material, in principle, disappears by itself. But, is it possible to paint the wallpaper not for painting? It all depends on what type of vinyl wallpaper is glued to the wall.

As you know, this finishing material is of two types:

  • Paper based. It is not advisable to paint such canvases, since there is a risk of moisture penetrating under the top vinyl layer, which will lead to their sticking from the wall. True, some paper-based wallpapers successfully transfer this operation, but, in any case, you have to make a decision at your own peril and risk;
  • Non-woven. These canvases are more resistant to moisture, so there is no risk of their peeling off. However, some problems may arise during the painting process - uneven coloring as a result of the porous structure of the foamed vinyl, as well as the manifestation of the color of the wallpaper. How to solve them I will tell below.

From this we can conclude that it is better to immediately purchase tapestries for painting, if you plan to repaint the walls over time.

For frequent repainting of walls, it is better to purchase cullets for painting. High-quality models of these paintings can withstand up to 20 repaints. At the same time, their service life can reach 50 years.

What paint to choose

To paint vinyl wallpaper should use water dispersion paint. The fact is that this paint material has good adhesion. In addition, it has several other important advantages:

  • Lack of smell. This is due to the fact that there are no organic solvents in the composition - water is used instead;
  • Environmental friendliness. After painting the walls, it is absolutely not necessary to leave the house, as is the case with the use of oil paint;
  • Drying speed. This indicator depends on the time during which water evaporates from the surface of the walls, i.e. on average, the paint dries in a few hours;
  • Tinting option. Thanks to this, you can give the walls any color or shade. The only thing is to choose the right color (combination of colors) and its proportions;
  • Durability. High-quality water-dispersion paints do not crack and do not lose color, as a result of which they can serve more than 10 years.

I must say that there are several types of water dispersion paints on sale:

  • Acrylic
  • Latex;
  • Silicone, etc.

This usually confuses beginners and complicates the choice. In reality, it does not matter what type of polymer the paint contains. The main thing when choosing to pay attention to its following characteristics:

  • Gloss. The coating can be matte, semi-gloss, less often - glossy;
  • The level of moisture resistance and abrasion. Conditionally, paints can be divided according to this indicator into three types - non-moisture resistant, moisture resistant and waterproof. If the former do not withstand the effects of vagi at all, the latter can be neatly dampened. Water-resistant ones withstand direct contact with water and even detergents.

The choice of moisture resistance depends on the room in which you want to paint the wallpaper. For example, even non-moisture resistant paint can be used in the bedroom. For the kitchen or children's room, it is more advisable to use a waterproof coating.

Another important point is the quality of the paint, which depends solely on the manufacturer. The following are paints and varnishes from some manufacturers that have worked well:

Prices are current in the summer of 2017.

Painting technology

Painting vinyl wallpaper includes several basic steps:

Instructions for doing the job look like this:

Artwork Description of Actions
Tools and materials:
  • Paint roller. If the wallpaper has a deep relief, you should use a roller with medium or even long pile for painting;
  • Capacity for roller. You can purchase a special pallet or use any flat container;
  • Paint brush. It must be of high quality so that the pile does not come out of it;
  • Primer. If you have vinyl wallpaper for painting, you can use a transparent universal acrylic primer. If the wallpaper is ordinary, which have a color, it is better to process them with pigmented soil. It will not only improve the adhesion of the paint to the main one, but also paint the canvas with white.
  • Color. It will be needed to give the paint a certain color, if initially it is white.
Surface preparation:
  • Wallpaper must be cleaned of any possible contamination. To do this, they must be wiped with a damp sponge, you can even use soapy water;
  • Then the surface must be allowed to dry, after which it can be treated with a primer. If you will paint foamed vinyl, it is advisable to cover the surface several times so that all pores are closed.

Let me remind you that the soil is applied in thin even layers, with the obligatory interlayer drying. Under normal conditions, the primer dries in one and a half to two hours.

Paint preparation:
  • Before use, any water dispersion paint must be thoroughly shaken;
  • If the paint is too thick, add a small amount of water to it and mix;
  • If the paint is white, add color to it to give it a specific color. To determine the amount of color, first mix it with a little paint. Then, in the learned proportions, add color to the bulk of the paint material.
Painting:
  • Pour the paint into a flat roller container;
  • Dip the roller in a container and squeeze slightly;
  • Roll the roller on the surface of the walls with your own hands;
  • In hard to reach places, use a brush;
  • Wait for the wallpaper to dry, then apply a second coat.

Beginners are often interested in can I glue wallpaper on paint? If the paint is waterproof and does not peel off, then in principle it is possible to glue. But, it is better not to spare time, and to prepare the surface as expected.

Here, in fact, all the basic nuances of painting vinyl wallpaper.

Technology for painting old wallpapers

So, is it possible to paint ordinary paper wallpapers? It is possible, but infrequently and only after preliminary processing, since unprepared paper, water in the paint will soak and deform.

Preparatory work

Instruction:

  1. We take out all the movable furniture from the room, and cover the fixed furniture with plastic wrap. At the same time, it is also desirable to protect the floor from accidental ingress of spray paint.
  2. We clean the surface from all kinds of dust and dirt with a vacuum cleaner or a damp cloth.
  1. We glue the peeling areas. If the condition of such fragments is too deplorable, then we carefully trim them.
  1. We cover the damaged places and scratches with mastic, which after drying we grind with sandpaper.
  2. Primed surface. This is the most important step that will protect the wallpaper from the penetration of paint into their structure. The primer will create a reliable polymer layer that reduces paper porosity and protects the shabby finish from further wear.
  1. After the soil has completely dried, you can start painting.

Paint selection

Can paper wallpaper be painted with water-based paint? It’s even necessary. This is the most suitable slurry for the restoration of old wall finishes.

To verify this, let's look at its advantages:

  • Ecological cleanliness. When hardening, only harmless water vapor is released, which is important when using the emulsion in a room.
  • Low price. This is achieved due to the lack of an expensive solvent.
  • A wide range of saturated colors. Plus the ability to mix them to get unique color schemes.
  • Moisture resistance. After evaporation of H 2 O, the resulting polymer film has a high water resistance.
  • High resistance to abrasion, exposure to sunlight and temperature extremes.
  • Incombustibility. For paper finishes, this is a great way to increase your fire safety.
  • Ease of application. Does not form streaks and stains.
  • Possibility of wet cleaning. Allows you to keep the updated coverage clean.
  • Long service life. With proper care reaches ten years.

Emulsion application

  1. Dilute the purchased mixture with water according to the instructions attached to it.. If you bought a white emulsion, then we also add the necessary dyes, mixing everything with a construction mixer or a drill operating at low speeds.
  1. The resulting solution is poured into a special tray for paint.
  1. Dip a brush into the suspension and paint over corners and other hard-to-reach spots.
  1. Then we take a roller for painting with a medium pile, we collect an emulsion and spend several times on the ribbed surface, getting rid of excess fluid.

Tip: if you have textured wallpaper for decoration, it is better to take a tool with a long pile.
He is better able to handle numerous indentations.

  1. We draw the tool from left to right, dropping from the ceiling to the floor. In this case, it is necessary that each subsequent strip run a few centimeters to the previous one.
  2. At the moment the liquid in the roller ends, we run it over the already painted part of the wall to collect excess suspension from it.
  3. We are waiting for the first layer to solidify, after which we apply the second perpendicularly.
  4. R we check the result by bringing a bright light source close to the finish. So we can see the prominent spots.
  5. If the test was successful, then we can safely enjoy the work done..

Conclusion

We examined whether it is possible to color paper wallpapers and how to do it. First of all, for this it is necessary to carefully prepare the surface.

These include:

  • cleaning;
  • restoration of deformed areas;
  • creation of a protective waterproofing layer.

Next, you should purchase a water-based paint that is best suited for this task, and apply it with a brush and roller. Follow these recommendations and you will not have any difficulties.

The video in this article will give you an additional opportunity to get acquainted with a certain amount of information that directly relates to the materials reviewed. Painting is always easier and cheaper than a complete replacement of the finish.

There are different opinions about the appropriateness of staining old paper wallpaper. Indeed, in some cases, you should not even start this process. If they are poorly glued, have significant damage received during operation, then staining will not replace gluing new ones.

If they look good, but their color does not combine with new furniture, just tired or faded, then you can still postpone the replacement, and dispense with staining.

Before proceeding directly to the coloring of old wallpapers, you need to decide on a list of materials and tools that we may need in the process.

To paint glued surfaces you need:

  1. Water-repellent coating, preventing the coating from getting wet, and as a result of it lagging behind the wall;
  2. Paint;
  3. Paint roller and brushes of different sizes. The length of the pile on the roller depends on the relief of the surface to be painted. If the surface is smooth, then the roller should be with a pile of medium length;
  4. Masking tape, which is required to seal the skirting boards, thereby protecting them from paint.

In more detail should consider the choice of paint. They can be: satin, semi-gloss, glossy, semi-gloss and matte. The choice depends on the type of surface and lighting in the room. For example, for a kitchen with smooth surfaces, semi-gloss paint is perfect, it will reflect light well and be easy to clean. And in the interior of large halls matte finish will fit perfectly.

Also, when choosing a paint, you need to consider such characteristics as:

  1. Resistance to light and mechanical stress;
  2. The ability to overlap another paint so that it does not shine through;
  3. Drying time;
  4. Possibility of washing;
  5. Environmental friendliness.

The basics of paint are divided into:

  1. Alkyd based paints;
  2. Water or latex;
  3. Acrylic.

Before proceeding directly to the staining, preparatory work is necessary. First, remove dirt, dust and cobwebs from the walls with a vacuum cleaner and a sponge. Then you need to seal all the skirting boards with masking tape.

After all this is done, you can proceed to the application of a water-repellent coating. It is better to apply it with a roller, and in hard-to-reach places and corners - with a brush.

After a water-repellent coating is applied to the surface of the walls, you need to maintain one temperature, avoiding its differences and not creating drafts. Failure to comply with these rules will cause the wallpaper to peel off or air bubbles to form beneath their surface.

After the coating is completely dry (about a day), you can proceed to the next step.

The paint must be mixed until a homogeneous mass. If desired, you can add the selected color to it and mix thoroughly. Before applying, be sure to make sure that the paint is exactly the color that was selected.

Paint can be applied to the prepared surface. This should be done with a roller, and in the corners with a brush. Try to apply paint with an even thin layer.

Staining should begin with walls that are covered with furniture, thereby training on them.

It is better to start painting from the ceiling so that drops of paint do not spoil the already painted surface.

After drying the first layer, and it takes 3-4 hours, you can apply the second.

After both layers are applied and dried, the painting can be considered complete.
