Children's bed project with drawers. DIY children's bed. Method for making a bunk bed

The appearance of a child is a new stage in the life of a young family. They prepare for it in advance, at this moment the parents become closer, jointly showing care for their child. The necessary things from the first days appear in the house: oilcloths, diapers, diapers, a bath, special hygiene products, a personal bed. The cost of all the required items can be very onerous for young couples, sometimes overwhelming. Many are trying to save money, for example, they make toys on their own, make a crib with their own hands.

If you draw up a drawing correctly, plan the design of the bed, then the furniture can be used for a long time, from the moment the child is born to his four or five years. It is extremely important to teach your baby to sleep separately from the first day. It is unacceptable to put him in his parents' bed. Although most mothers sleep very lightly, irreparable things can happen in a dream. In addition, it is difficult to wean a child from the parental bed.

Advantages and features of making a bed with your own hands

Furniture stores sell many models of cribs made from various materials. Wood and its derivatives are mainly used, but there are also plastic options. It is not always possible to find furniture for a newborn that meets all the requirements, and suitable products are very expensive. In this case, homemade designs will be an excellent alternative, they have a number of advantages, expressed in the following:

  1. Cost. Self-made furniture will be much cheaper than purchased counterparts, which will help save the family budget.
  2. Reliability. During preparation and assembly, at each stage, the strength of all components is checked.
  3. Environmental friendliness. The bed for your son or daughter is made only from natural wood, which does not emit harmful substances.
  4. Exclusivity. An independently drawn up drawing will be the key to an individual, unique product.
  5. Experience gain. During work, a person acquires new skills that can later be applied in the production of such items.
  6. Compatible with the interior and style of the room.

When making a bed, you should adhere to certain rules:

  • for work, it is necessary to use exclusively environmentally friendly materials, which include natural wood;
  • the surface should not have sharp corners, roughness, chips, protrusions;
  • the product must correspond to the height, weight, physiological parameters of the baby.
  • it is necessary to provide protection against falling, rolling of the child.
  • for small apartments or houses, multifunctional structures are suitable, for this you can use the free space under them, install additional boxes, make a play area.

Designs and sizes of a baby bed

The easiest way is to make standard furniture, which consists of four legs, a frame, a mattress and a headboard. The model is used exclusively for baby sleep. If the sleeping place is fenced around the perimeter with walls with lattices, then you get a classic bed for a newborn. Although for such a category, you can use a cradle, arena, rocking chair, attached options.

In small rooms, it is more practical to install multifunctional items. To do this, they are equipped with drawers, a chest of drawers, and other useful items. A very functional bed with an attic, where the sleeping place is placed on the second tier. Below you can organize a playground, install lockers for storing items.

Furniture made in the shape of a typewriter looks unusual. This is an option for older children under adolescence. Non-standard design will allow you to make inconspicuous cabinets inside, hidden under the hood or behind the door. You will have to tinker with many elements, which will require certain carpentry skills.

Among the non-standard designs, you can choose a lodge bed. This model is suitable for children over 3 years old. There are all the elements of a standard item, as well as doors and windows, a gable roof. Decorative items will adorn any interior, will delight every kid.

What material to make beds

When constructing children's furniture on your own, you need to decide on the materials that will be used in the process. The main requirement is that the raw materials used must be environmentally friendly, not harm the development of the baby. Let's dwell on this issue in more detail, consider the best option for all components of the structure:

  1. Mattress. It is recommended to purchase it in a specialized store, since purchased models are produced taking into account the recommendations developed by orthopedic doctors. If the bed is planned to be used for more than one year, then it is better to choose two-sided products with varying degrees of rigidity. For children under three years old, a hard, rigid coating is required, which contributes to fixation of the back, the correct development of the body. The filler should be woolen, do not take models that include cotton wool and foam rubber. The upholstery should also be made of natural fabric and have an antiseptic coating.
  2. Frame, slats, legs, sides. For a beloved child, only a tree should be chosen. Conifers are suitable for work: pine, spruce. Natural wood breathes, it is strong enough to suit any interior. Those who decide to use MDF or chipboard should remember that the boards contain phenol and formaldehyde resins, therefore it is necessary to take only models with an emission class E-0.
  3. Protective equipment. To extend the service life, wooden surfaces are treated with special compounds, they are painted, varnished. For these purposes, nitroenamel, acrylic, water-based paint for children's rooms is used. Using wax is a great option. To preserve the texture of the wood, you can use acrylic varnish, other options are highly toxic.

If you have free money, you can buy dense wood species: solid oak, larch. This is the most durable material, the products look rich, but it is rather difficult to process the raw materials.

We make a bed with our own hands

Having firmly decided to independently build a structure, you should understand all the nuances associated with its creation. Initially, a drawing is developed in which all the constituent elements are displayed. Then they acquire the materials necessary for the work, prepare the tools, in the absence of any of them, they buy it in addition.

On the basis of the scheme, the raw materials are marked for component parts. They are cut out, combined into a single structure, treated with special compounds, painted, varnished, and decorated. For clarity, we will consider in detail the main stages that include the process of making a classic crib.

Drawings and diagram

The creation of any object is impossible without a drawing. In a graphic image made in a certain scale, the sizes of the nodes are indicated. To draw up it, you will need minimal drawing skills, you can also use special programs. When developing a project, consider:

  1. The dimensions of the room where the product will be installed. A larger bed can be placed in a spacious room.
  2. The dimensions of standard products for children under three years old are 120x60 cm.If you plan to use the structure in the future, you should give preference to the larger models 150x60 cm, 180x70 cm.
  3. At the bottom of the bed, you can equip lockers in which baby things will be stored.
  4. For preschoolers, it is worthwhile to provide removable bumpers that will protect them from rolling and falling.
  5. Design and decoration are chosen according to the preferences of the parents.

Required tools and materials

To make and assemble the bed, you will need the following materials:

  • board;
  • mDF sheet;
  • varnishes and paints;
  • screws, fasteners, rubber heels on the legs.

Instruments:

  • saw for wood, jigsaw;
  • hammer, screwdriver, screwdriver;
  • drill, drill;
  • measuring instruments, a simple pencil.

Basic parts and their preparation

A standard bed consists of 4 legs, 2 backs, sides, removable sides, frame, slats, mattress. The last item from the list is purchased ready-made, the rest are made by hand. The process looks like this:

  1. In accordance with the drawing, the marking of all component parts is applied to the tree. This can be done with a tape measure and a simple pencil.
  2. The elements are cut with an electric jigsaw, a saw.
  3. Component parts are sanded with sandpaper.
  4. Depending on the length of the sidewalls, metal corners used to install the mattress are cut with a grinder. Holes are drilled in them for self-tapping screws to secure them to the tree.
  5. All components are painted and varnished.

The main stages of assembly

Work on assembling the bed is carried out in the following sequence:

  1. Collect the backs, located at the head and foot. They are connected to the legs.
  2. Prepare the base for the mattress. To do this, metal corners are attached to the wooden sidewalls using self-tapping screws. Lamellas are fixed to them from above, perpendicular to the side walls.
  3. The backs and the base for the mattress are connected using furniture fittings; for reliability, it is better to use corners.
  4. A mattress is installed on the frame.
  5. On the sides, removable protective sides are added, fixed on special metal or wooden fittings.
  6. If necessary, the finished product is decorated.

Making and assembling the car bed

Children will be delighted with this design. Everyone can make it. To do this, you need to draw up a drawing or download it online. Then you can start cutting out the components and assembling. The work consists of the following stages:

  1. Side and front walls are made of furniture board.
  2. On the side surfaces, cutouts are made to imitate the doors of a car, through which it will be convenient for a child to get inside.
  3. On one of the end parts, using a jigsaw, holes are carefully cut out for the headlights and radiator.
  4. Then a few more planks are cut out, imitating the hood of the car, the windshield.
  5. Wheels are being prepared.
  6. Wooden corners are attached to the side walls, on which the base for the mattress is laid.
  7. A rectangular frame is assembled from the prepared parts, which is installed on the wheels.
  8. The resulting workpiece is painted or varnished.
  9. The base is fixed inside the frame, the mattress is laid.

Features of assembling a bed for newborns

For newborns, the design of the bed should be slightly different. Its standard size is 120x60 cm; when the baby reaches 3 years old, it will become cramped for him. When planning, it is worth considering the possibility of adjusting the height of the bed. When the child is small, it is convenient to place it higher, and as soon as he learns to get up, the bottom will have to be lowered for safety.

For a comfortable sleep of crumbs, parents, neighbors, one removable side or end wall should be provided in the crib, which will allow it to be placed near the parent. The distance between the rods around the entire perimeter is made within 2.5 - 6 cm. These are the optimal dimensions at which the child cannot pinch his fingers or stick his head. Do not forget about the strength of the product, good fixation of removable elements.

In addition to the listed features, the legs of the bed are often installed on casters, making it mobile. Pendulum mechanisms or rockers are also equipped. Their use is recommended by pediatricians. This makes it easy to lull the child to sleep. It is advisable to use the bumper only in the first months, then it should be removed in order to increase the view that learns the world of the child.

Decor of the bed with soft sides of our own tailoring

Dad is not the only one who can contribute to the family budget by building a ready-made crib. Mom can also join this process by decorating the product with soft sides. Outwardly, the craft resembles covers filled with filler. In addition to the decorative function, they also perform a practical one, protect the baby from accidental impacts on the rods, do not give him the opportunity to stick his hand between them. When sewing them, certain requirements must be observed:

  • The fabric should be only natural, flax, calico, cotton are suitable. Wool must be used as a filler.
  • It is better to choose the material in light, pastel shades, which have a good effect on the psyche of the child.
  • If a drawing is provided, then it should be done in medium size, a small one will annoy him.

Master class on making a bunk bed

It is ideal for a family with two children of the same age, be it a boy and a girl or same-sex babies. The design of the bunk bed repeats the single-tier one. A slight difference lies only in the presence of a ladder, the height of the product, the fastening of two boxes on the same supports. For safety, a side is provided on top, located around the entire perimeter. To understand all the intricacies of the model, consider a master class on making such a bed:

  1. We prepare boards with a section of 3.5x10 cm.According to the chosen scheme, we cut out 4 blanks of 190 cm each, 4 - 180 cm each, 4 - 80 cm each.
  2. On 190 cm boards, stepping back from each edge by 30 cm, on both end sides from above and below we make grooves for the width of the beams 3.5x10 mm.
  3. We collect the side backs. For this, two support legs are connected using 80 cm segments.
  4. The finished backrests are connected using 4 pieces of 180 cm, installed in the outer end grooves.
  5. Above and below we make the base for the mattress. To do this, lamellas are nailed along the perimeter of both tiers over the sidewalls. Here they can not be recessed, thanks to the sides located in a circle.
  6. We mount the stairs. Its length should be the distance from the lower edge of the side partition to the upper edge of the support.
  7. We install the sides, lay the mattress.

Self-made bed with storage boxes

As a basis for the manufacture of such a structure, you can take any drawing of a standard bed. The only difference will be the presence of full-fledged side walls and drawers. First of all, it is necessary to determine their number. It can be one element that takes up the entire space under the bed, two, or even three. It is also worth considering the type of sliding parts. There are two radically different options: independent of the main body, fixed to the frame, sliding out on the guides.

The process of building the product will be similar to the preparation and assembly of an ordinary single bed for children. Here it is necessary to provide not legs, but side walls and intermediate partitions on which the guides will be attached. It is also worth considering the fact that the gap between the floor and the bottom of the tray must be at least 1 cm.

To make the box itself, you will need to prepare four wooden segments, their dimensions depend on the size of the space under the bed. Then they are connected in a rectangular or square box, a chipboard sheet, plywood is nailed from below. To strengthen the structure from the inside from the bottom, 4 support strips are installed around the entire perimeter, they make a loose bottom, which allows you to store heavier items.

Decorating methods

Comfortable conditions and practical design are equally important for a baby bed. To improve the conditions for the baby, auxiliary decorative elements are used, which also have a number of useful functions. Consider the most popular options for decorating this item:

  • Canopy. An elegant canopy that is sewn from any natural fabric. It is recommended to use this element up to 4-5 months.

Besides decoration, the product serves as protection against insects. A lot of dust settles on it, so it must be washed frequently.

  • Canopy. Unlike the previous version, only light, transparent materials are used: tulle, organza, veil. Fastening is done with a bar.
  • Valance. This is the framing of the lower edge of the bed. It covers the lower part of the furniture, which will perfectly mask some of the mistakes made when making the crib yourself.
  • Hanging toys. Often they are suspended together with a music mobile. This type of decor is made from cardboard or fabric. Contributes to the development of the child. They can have the most diverse appearance, be it snowflakes, animals, flowers or others.
  • Stickers. You can buy them at any furniture store. When fixing them, it is worth taking care that the child cannot reach them.

Painting the bed - which paint is better to use

In the industrial production of baby beds, oil paints are used. They improve the appearance, protect the surface from damage, and are easy to clean from dirt. When choosing coloring agents on your own, you should study their composition, make sure that there are no toxic, poisonous elements in it. These requirements are met:

  • Water based acrylic paints. They are distinguished by their high cost and good performance.
  • Nitro paints. They do not have a pronounced odor, are inexpensive, dry quickly.
  • Water-based. They are characterized by a long service life. With their help, you can hide shallow cracks.
  • Wax. The most expensive option. It is a flawless, high-quality coating that is water-repellent.

A person cannot do without a pillow. This is due to the structure of the human body. The element supports the bending of the cervical spine, promotes blood flow to the brain. The child begins to put this object at the age of 1-2 years, depending on his physical development. The product should have a rectangular shape from 30x40 to 40x60 cm.Its thickness must be: for children under three years old - 3-4 cm, after - 5-6 cm.An important place is occupied by its elasticity, too soft a pillow will lead to pain in the cervical vertebra, quick fatigue.

Bird fluff, natural wool, buckwheat husk, holofiber, latex are used as a filler. The last three options are the best in terms of elasticity. When selecting fabric material, preference should be given to natural fiber treated with antiseptics. It is better to choose models in which the cover is zipped, then you can control the condition of the filler.

Unlike a pillow, a mattress is necessary from the first days of the child. It must be hypoallergenic, safe, absorb and evaporate liquids without problems. For babies, elasticity is also of great importance, so it is necessary to take only orthopedic products. Otherwise, the requirements for filler and casing are almost the same as for pillows.

Choice of bed linen

Any person gains strength during sleep, and babies are still growing and developing. Every parent wants to make this moment calm. In this matter, they are helped by bed linen, which should be of high quality, made from natural materials. For these purposes, the following types of fabric are used:

  • cotton,
  • chintz,
  • satin,
  • coarse calico,
  • bamboo.

The color of the selected canvas should be neutral; it is better to use pastel, light colors that are conducive to sleep. For newborns, a product without a pattern is suitable, for older children, but not for adolescents - underwear with a print of your favorite characters from animated series. Also, when choosing bedding, you should pay attention to:

  • the material should not lose its structure and color from frequent washes;
  • do not take linen with buttons, ribbons, lace;
  • Conclusion

    Having studied the ready-made schemes, having considered all the positive and negative aspects associated with the independent manufacture of a crib for their baby, any parent will build a similar structure. At the same time, all family members can participate in the process. Dad will prepare and assemble the frame, and mom will pick up a mattress, pillow, bedding, make decorative elements with her own hands. This will not only save the family budget, but also show the child that they are being cared for and loved.

The crib should be ready to accept new additions to the family while mom prepares for discharge, but not only out of courtesy and joy. Man is a social being, and a stable society is impossible without hierarchy. Having received his territory and things from birth, even if he still does not understand their meaning at all, a small person will gain self-confidence, with time he will correctly determine his place in society and achieve success. This, of course, is not an absolute law, but the statistics show unequivocally: babies who, by the will (or lack of will) of their parents in an irresponsible age, wandered anywhere, are much more likely to grow up carelessly useless. There is even a historical and sociological theory: they say, people began to get out of savagery and create civilization, when the cradle was invented and mothers stopped carrying babies all the time.

All this may be interesting, but in a developed civilization, dad, in happy anticipation rushing to shops and websites, discovers that the prices for cribs for babies are disproportionately high compared to the complexity and material consumption of products. And you will not dig into, under each hidden cheat there is a solid medical, environmental, production and legislative basis. But what about the consumer society, and let the parents spare nothing for their child.

Let's say the head of the family is a craftsman. Then he has the idea to make the bed himself: its design has developed over thousands of years, there is nothing complicated in it, and nothing is required at all. It is possible to make a crib for a baby with your own hands, using an ordinary household tool and plus a jigsaw, manual or, better, electric. There is one more reason: the mother after childbirth, especially if this is the first-born, will be "on edge." After making sure that the faithful in her absence did not fumble and do not drag, but worked diligently in his field for the sake of the family good, she will calm down much faster and generally return to normal. And there will be more milk, which again benefits the child.

What are we going to do?

Classic bed for a newborn, pos. 1 in the figure, the design is straightforward. Basic requirements for it:

  • Ecological cleanliness and complete medical and sanitary safety.
  • No sharp protrusions or edges.
  • There should be no holes / openings and crevices in which anything from a finger to a head can get stuck in the little one.
  • The presence of sides is required; how dangerous it is for babies to fall even from a small height is known. The front board (wall) is desirable partially hinged or lowered, so that it is more convenient for the mother to take care of the child.
  • Ventilated, i.e. lattice or perforated bottom. No matter how improved the means of children's hygiene, the baby will someday make the bed.
  • If a newborn is the firstborn and it is supposed to someday add siblings to him, then sufficient strength and durability in combination with a collapsible design.

Often, a crib is placed on wheels for ease of movement around the house, pos. 2. In small apartments, you can sometimes find samples with boxes for linen in the bedside space, as in adults, pos. 3. However, for the reasons stated above, the boxes under the infant bed must be fitted with moisture-proof lids. Finally, a rather complicated and expensive product, but convenient for the mother and saving living space, is a bed for newborns combined with a chest of drawers for changing, pos. 4.

Many babies have to be rocked to sleep. The main types of rocking beds hammock, pos. 5, cradle (with top suspension of the bed), pos. 6, and a cradle (with a bed on the lower curved rocking supports), pos. 7. The hammock is suitable only as a temporary rookery, say, at the dacha on the weekend. Bones and babies are still soft, and constant reclining on something malleable deforms his skeleton. Cots for newborns - hammocks are often made foldable and transported.

The cradle is easy to swing, but more difficult to make, because some kind of mechanism is required. In addition, the risk for a baby to fall out of the cradle, hanging over the side, is much greater than from a hammock or cradle. The latter, in addition, is easier to do, and small bumpers on the rocking chairs make it completely safe, which is why the cradle is the most common. In the cradle, there must be a bed retainer, and it is highly desirable spring-loaded with self-resetting, which must be diverted for motion sickness, otherwise the bustling mother may forget to insert it, moving away from the crib. “Self-resetting” means that the mechanism itself will put the bed horizontally and drop the pin into the socket if the cradle tilt angle exceeds a certain permissible value.

Note: cribs for babies may have completely different bumpers, which see at the end.

Swinging in the transverse direction is not optimal for a person, this is how our vestibular apparatus is arranged. Anyone who has gone to sea on a boat or sailing yacht knows that pitching is much easier onboard. Babies who are constantly rocked from side to side may even develop an addiction to motion sickness, which is why the obnoxious screamer, having grown up, runs the risk of turning into a hyperactive stunner or "no" autistic. The likelihood of injuring the baby's psyche by excessive motion sickness is reduced to almost zero if the cradle (pos. 8) or cradle (pos. 9) are adapted to longitudinal motion sickness.

Recently, pendulum beds have become widespread, pos. 10, free from the disadvantages of bassinets and cradles. First, lateral motion in a pendulum crib is harmless, because the child's body does not tilt with him and his vestibular apparatus experiences an absolutely insignificant load in one plane. Secondly, it is almost impossible for a child to fall out of it, because the bed itself is not tiltable. Thirdly, the bedside box can be arranged more simply - access to it is provided automatically. The pendulum mechanism itself is fundamentally uncomplicated, pos. 11, you will only need to adjust the spring tension occasionally as the child grows.

How not to do it!

In no case do you need to make a crib for a newborn that can swing in 2 planes, pos. 1 and 2 in Fig. Perhaps your offspring, having matured, will set out to become a pilot or a parachutist and from the first call will withstand with a joyful grin, without turning a little green, training on the loping. But in infancy, a humpty dumpty to and fro would not have done good for Valery Chkalov.

Further, it is undesirable to make the bottom of the crib with too sparse crate, pos. 3. When the baby learns to get up, his legs will crawl into the cracks along with the mattress. A thick mattress pad (see below) solves the problem, but this is extra work, material and costs, and extra drying replacements. The best base for a newborn's crib is made of fiberboard, approx. 10 mm with holes 20-30 mm in diameter, drilled along the mesh with a pitch of 70-90 mm. Suddenly it will completely become unusable, it is easier and cheaper to replace than a mattress pad, and it takes up less spare space. And don't worry, fiberboard is an environmentally friendly material, even cleaner than the original wood. In its manufacture, synthetic binders are not used, and in the process of processing all volatile substances are "exhaled" from the wood.

Note: it is also undesirable to make a bottom adjustable in height in the baby's crib. The nests under its holders are tempting from the point of view of knowing the world, and the little finger will crawl into them. If without nests, then a rather complex and expensive mechanism is required. And mom will have enough flap.

A bad solution is also a crib, pos. 4. For all creatures whose life is divided into an active phase and sleep, instinct during the latter requires complete safety. Combining the sleeping area with the play area does not give it. Which adult can have a good night's sleep at work? And what about small children who are defenseless and not yet able to understand their surroundings?

About the canopy

A canopy over the crib of a newborn is not a luxury. And not so much a remedy for dust, which should not be in the nursery and generally in a well-kept apartment. But remember, which adult was not brought to white heat by an autumn fly or an itchy and itchy mosquito in the dark? What is it like for a kid who does not yet own little hands? And it is very, very unnecessary to turn on the fumigator or spray repellent in the nursery.

The canopy over the baby's crib is made of natural fabric that freely passes through the air: chiffon, veil (silk or cotton), organza (only silk), muslin. The optimal design is a tent, on the left in the figure, or a tent, in the center, allowing, if necessary, to fully open / move the canopy. But remember: in the process of learning about the environment, the child will pull and pull the canopy.

Purchased children's canopies are equipped with a sturdy bracket with a holding paw made of lightweight durable elastic plastic, on the right in Fig. In case of self-production, the best option is a canopy-tent, suspended by a cord from the ceiling. An M6 screw hook screwed into a steel threaded collet, and a strong adult will not pull out of the ceiling, and if you unscrew it, the hole is almost imperceptible on the ceiling with a height of only 2.5 m. except for the lightest fabric and thin lace will not fall off.

Note: the best protection for the crib from annoying insects and dust, under which the asthmatic is not out of breath is a mosquito net. But not a fiberglass window, but a special tropical one. Its meshes are wider than that of dress-drapery airy fabrics and it itself is stronger. We have this rare product, but take an interest. Ruched bows don't look bad for her either.

What bumpers to make?

Sellers offer a wide variety of protective fences for baby cots: folding, lowering, swinging, sliding, with doors and hatches. But upon closer examination, it turns out that everywhere there is something in which a finger or a whole pen can be pinched. And the recesses under the attachments carefully store the dust and, as it were, invite the settlers themselves. Only undesirable and not a human kind, but an arthropod.

The simplest and safest sides for a newborn's crib are folding ones with elastic bands, see fig. The height of the folding part of 150-180 mm is enough for the mother to be comfortable looking after the baby. There are no complaints about such boards, but it is reliably known that at least one new person in this world with a character to the envy of m-mes Sobtchak & Timoshenko has never been injured in her and has not broken anything in her for 3.5 years; the elastic bands were changed 2 times during this time.

Note: 2 ways of laying this type of flap will be discussed below.

Let's get down to business

Now it's time to make the crib. Its design and decoration is another article (with one small exception, see below); first you need to make a solid and reliable base for them. And even before that, decide on the material; first of all, for its safety for the baby, then for the price and manufacturability at home.

What to make of?

Even the safest plastics disappear: a little older, the child begins to touch everything. The tactile sensations from plastic are contrary to its fundamental instincts, which can cause irritability and damage the emerging moral and volitional qualities. For the same reason, we discard the metal, which will also harm more when the baby's teeth begin to cut. Then the disadvantages of textile and other semi-soft type of beds will also fully affect.

As for laminated chipboard, the emission class of phenol-containing compounds E0 (zero, premium or extra grade) seems to be applicable for children's furniture. But conscientious manufacturers in the specifications honestly point out: "For children from 6 months", therefore, not newborns. In addition, high-quality laminated chipboard is expensive, a bed made of it will cost more than a ready-made purchased one with a canopy. That is, a newborn's bed must be made of wood.

We choose wood for a crib taking into account that its impregnation with any biocides is unacceptable. Therefore, any commercial timber of foreign origin is eliminated: its raw material on the market is simply not allowed by consumer supervision. Of domestic hardwoods, birch and beech are suitable for a bed for several generations; for single use - cheap aspen or linden, but expensive. All the rest contain tannins, salicylates and other substances that are harmless for adults, but can cause allergies in an infant.

Of conifers, pine is quite reliable, but not all. Pine wood is marketed in the form of expensive tar, cut down during sap flow, and cheaper dry chips, harvested in winter. The tar is good for outdoor buildings, because it does not lend itself well to rot and pests, but it is absolutely unsuitable for a crib. In other conifers, the change in resin content from sap flow to sleep is not so pronounced, so it is better not to risk it.

In order not to miscalculate with pine, it is better to make a crib from it with plywood. The cheapest construction and packaging plywood is made just from dried pine, glued together with harmless and safe casein glue. It makes no sense to "cheat" manufacturers, because everything else is more expensive. A plywood bed will serve with proper home preparation of the material, see below, 2-3 times for 4-5 years, which is quite enough for a family.

About finishing

Over time, the baby will feel that something is climbing in his mouth with which to bite. And then he will begin to gnaw everything. This is a natural and necessary process, but once it created serious problems for children's furniture makers: leaving the tree naked - the fibers will swallow, or even choke on a chip. Nitrolac is not harmless, and its sharp scales cut lips, gums, tongue.

Now there is no such problem: water-based acrylic varnish, firstly, is completely safe; secondly, it is very durable. Compounds of a similar composition restore the enamel of the bathtubs, about which a hardened wolf will break its fangs.

Very suspicious parents can also put special silicone pads on the sides of the crib. But you will have to buy them and adjust the design to the selected sample: construction and aquarium silicone is not suitable for homemade products, you need a special one, from which toys for teething are made. It is not on sale in its raw form, only in finished products.

Cradle and classic

How a classic wooden cradle for newborns works is shown in fig. on right. Pay attention, firstly, to the packing of the sides in the pockets and the prefabricated structure of the rockers. We'll deal with the first one, and use the second later. Its recommended dimensions and specification of details in a modern design, without labor-intensive artistic details, are shown in Fig. below.

Cradle

Who knows, perhaps the pediatrician, after examining your restless baby, will recommend rocking him in the cradle. A child is a child, and there is no person who would fit into the general rules in everything. For such a case, Fig. drawings of a newborn's crib - a cradle made of boards. However, the grown child cannot be kept in the cradle in any way, so the length of this crib should not be increased. Secondly, the retainer (stopper) of the bed is still needed, since the baby is restless. In this design, it is manual, so remember to stick it in when leaving and control each other.

Plywood classic

Here in fig. - detailing of a classic-type plywood crib for a newborn with an elastic band. It was made at home; manual jigsaw (there were no electric ones on wide sale then). The wayward person mentioned above grew up in her. Material - 2 sheets (quite a lot left) of birch plywood 6 mm thick; construction pine will also go.

First of all, a plaza was prepared (several pieces of packaging cardboard put together), the contours of the parts were sketched on it, and everything was covered with a solid plastic wrap. Then a sheet of plywood on the plaza was impregnated with a water-polymer emulsion, first on one side, and after it had completely dried on the other, and cut into blanks with a hacksaw. A jigsaw cut grooves for the crate in the middle plates of the packages and openings in the backs.

Parts from plates on PVA for wood were glued (sold and sold in hardware and hardware stores). The glue was applied with a brush in a thin layer on all glued surfaces of the plates of the package and kept until soft tack (the glue film turns slightly yellow and becomes translucent in places).

There was no loan for rallying the packages, there was no time to do it. Therefore, small bags were simply wrapped in polyethylene and tightly pulled together with a flat elastic band for panties; it left a whole skein, approx. 10 m. It was necessary to tighten the packages with an elastic band, winding and pulling the turns very evenly so that the plates would not crawl over the glue. The upper and lower strips of the walls (pos. 1 and 3) were still crawling, therefore, having applied and withstood glue, they had to be knocked down with small nails. The nails were then pulled out, and the holes were covered with homemade sawdust putty on the same PVA.

It was more difficult with the backs, you can't tighten them with rubber bands. Therefore, holes were drilled for the assembly guides, which were used furniture dowels 18 mm long. The gluing of the backs was carried out on the plaza under oppression, which consisted of pancakes from dumbbells and stacks of books. According to the calculation, for 2 layers of PVA of such an area, a bend of 25-35 kg is needed, evenly distributed over the surface of the package.

Also, parts of the support belt were glued from 3 strips of plywood, each of which was assembled in the crib in place. In all details, the protruding glue drips after drying for 3-4 days were cut off with a safety razor blade (there were no cutting knives then either) and the edges were sanded.

While the glued packages were drying, the frame of the bed was assembled from planks cut in half a tree, glued without aging and reinforced with nails. The rectangularity of the frame on the not yet cured glue was carefully checked by measuring the sides and diagonals, because it then served as an assembly template, and only then the nails were driven in. The bed is covered with perforated fiberboard, see above. It was laid on glue and nails on the side with which the legs of the crossbars were, so that they lay on the longitudinal beams, and not hang on nails and glue.

Note: the racks of the backs were made similar to those of the walls, but shorter. Stacked in place before overlaying the top plate.

The crib was going to be on the screws (now, of course, confirmation will be better). The loads on the connections of the baby's crib are small, fastening with threaded hardware along the layer in this case is quite reliable and at the same time allows up to 4-5 disassembly / assembly if the plywood is impregnated with a water-polymer emulsion. The rectangularity of the box was verified by the stock, and its horizontalness by the level. Then marks were made along its bottom and the beams of the support belt were placed along them on glue and nails; the transverse ones should be spaced between the longitudinal ones, so the crib will be stronger.

The oval support boss of the side flap is less traumatic and easier to make than a pocket. Some of the scraps with a thickness of 18 mm went to the bosses, they were put on glue and nails. At the ends of the strip, U-shaped holes were chosen for them, with a drill and a chisel - there were no household cutters for wood at that time either.

Time still endured, and the bed was covered with oil varnish, not as harmful as nitro. Immediately, the elastic bands were fixed in the blind holes with also furniture dowels. Then another final drying, and the bed is ready.

Transformer

There are also many convertible cribs for newborns on sale, but at least one variety is not just a fashion statement. We are talking about a crib for growth, but this is not limited to a sliding bottom. A sufficiently formed personality may be indignant: "I will not sleep like a small person!" Therefore, a transformer crib "from scratch" should be structurally and externally similar to an adult. In this case, the fence is made removable from the cord; of course, this is only an option for fairly calm babies. And the transformation comes down to the fact that one back is removed and the bed is increased in length with it. Drawings of a homemade "growing" bed for newborns are shown in Fig.

Drawings of a crib "from zero to growth"

And if you are very restless?

It also happens that the doctor makes a helpless gesture: nothing can be done, you need to sleep with you, then he will outgrow it. Or, on the contrary, even if the mother is the most wonderful in the world, she is weak and constantly gets up at night to feed her. Then you will need a crib attached to the parental bed without a front wall. The crib for restless newborns necessarily includes a bumper - a soft hygroscopic pillow along the contour with ties, see fig. on right. And from what and how to sew a crib bumper with your own hands, see the video below:

Video: how to sew a bumper (bumpers) in a child's bed

Arrangement

In no case should you protect the mattress of a crib from getting wet with oilcloth, this will lead to scuffs and diaper rash in the baby. Firstly, you need 2 mattresses, with a margin for drying. Secondly, they should not rot and dry quickly enough. Therefore, it is preferable to sew them from linen and wrap with coarse calico, flannel or a bike. Best horsehair padding; its almost complete replacement is coconut fiber or sisal.

Now remember that the bones of a newborn are soft. Therefore, the thickness of the mattress needs to be small, up to 6-7 cm. But then it will not be so comfortable to sleep, feeling a hard bed as a body. A mattress topper 10-15 cm thick will help out from the most dense, 45-50 room, furniture foam rubber, it is wrapped in the same fabric as the mattress. The mattress topper, in addition, will absorb some of the moisture, which will speed up the drying of the mattress, but then they are also needed 2.

A newborn does not need a pillow to prevent torticollis from developing. However, sometimes, on the recommendation of a doctor, for very nimble ones you have to buy a butterfly pillow: its middle is almost flat, and the wings are voluminous. But you do not need to experiment with such pillows yourself - suitable materials are not sold separately and the manufacturing technology cannot be "domesticated".

Decorations

When considering the design of a baby's crib, you need to remember that his vision, both in acuity and color perception, is formed gradually. Therefore, the contours of the decorative elements are needed smooth, and the colors are dim and unsaturated, preferably close to the middle of the spectrum: pale yellow, light beige, light green, pale blue. Whitewashed reds and oranges are acceptable, but poisonous greens, deep blues, and purples don't, like anything shiny.

A very simple and useful way for a child to decorate his crib is to hang a mobile carousel over it, see fig., With soft toys. Their smooth movement will not only calm the baby, but also contribute to the development of his visual motor skills. Since the introduction of mobiles for babies, the number of children with congenital visual impairments has dropped markedly.

Finally

Presumably, now it has become clear to you that an unpretentious bed for a newborn is inherently not so simple, because it contains a whole world of a new person. Therefore, let me wish you success not only in your skills, but also in the study of the basics of child psychology. They have it from the very beginning, even if they themselves do not yet understand it.

For children, parents always try to choose the best, including furniture, but looking at completely childish prices for wooden beds, or on beds - cars, boats, etc. Inevitably, you will wonder whether it is worth buying such a thing for several years ... Buying, maybe not, but you can do it yourself. A do-it-yourself baby bed can be assembled from several boards and bars in a few days. No particularly complicated work or special tools are required. Basically, you need hands and desire.

Wooden bed

This is an ordinary bed without any tweaks. In the presented version, it is suitable for middle school age and adolescents, but then it can be completed for children from 3 years of age (second photo report). Assembled from wooden parts (planks and bars). The project can be used as a basis, then add design ideas.

You can argue about the color, but as a basis - a great option

Materials and tools

No special tools are required for manufacturing. All that is needed:

Materials needed are:

  • timber - 50 * 100 mm;
  • board 25 * 100 mm and 25 * 75 mm;
  • glue for wood;
  • putty for wood;
  • sandpaper.

Count the number of planks based on the planned size. Requirements for wood - low moisture content (not higher than 16%) and the absence of knots or their small number.

Making legs

A do-it-yourself children's bed begins with the manufacture of legs. We cut blanks from a bar of 50 * 100 mm - for the headboard it is longer, for the footboard it is shorter. 4 pieces of each length required. We glue the blanks in pairs. We take one, coat it with glue for wood, lay the second one, check whether they are evenly exposed, twist it with self-tapping screws. In principle, you can use a beam of 100 * 100 mm and do not bother with glue, but the price for it really bites.

The screw heads are sunk into the wood, then we put putty on the wood. After drying, sand to a smooth state (with medium to fine sandpaper).

We also use sandpaper to bring the joint to an ideal state - everything should be smooth and smooth.

For the backs, boards with a groove 25 mm wide will be needed. If you have a router, you can make it yourself or grind it in a carpentry shop. Dowels can also be bought ready-made; choose a drill according to their diameter.

We drill holes for dowels at the ends of the grooved strips. Determine exactly their distance from the edge - they should be strictly at the same level on all planks.

Also, the holes should be the same depth - half the length of this piece of wood. In order to be able to navigate when drilling, a marker is attached to the drill - a strip of masking tape. With its help, the depth of the hole is controlled.

Assembling the headboard and footboard

Planks of the same length are cut from a board of 25 * 50 mm to fill the headboard and footboard. They are inserted into a groove pre-coated with glue.

In the leg, we also drill a hole for the dowels. First, we find the middle, draw a line along it (with a pencil). Attach the assembled backrest, align it along the upper edge, put the dowels on the line and mark the places where you need to drill holes for them (two at the top, two at the bottom). Pour some glue into the holes and put the backrest. It must be planted tightly, without gaps. You can knock with your fist or mallet (do not damage the wood).

We repeat the same operation with the other leg. A not very beautiful joint at the top can be closed with a board, placing it on self-tapping screws and covering up the holes. As a result, this is what happens.

One important point when it comes to gluing parts. Until the glue is cured, the joints are mobile and the parts can be skewed. Therefore, setting the angles to 90 °, the part is fixed (with clamps or in some other way) and left until the glue dries. The work continues after drying, and, as a rule, it begins with grinding the joint, which has just been glued.

Making the base for the mattress

We take two boards 50 * 100 mm long, equal to the length of the mattress (or a couple of centimeters more to fill it up more conveniently). Along the edge, we plant a strip of 25 * 50 mm on glue and self-tapping screws. It is 10 cm shorter in length - we leave 5 cm from each edge. When screwing on the bar, we make sure that the edges are set exactly. We drill a hole for each self-tapping screw - close to the edge so that the wood does not burst. In addition, we make a hole of a larger diameter along the cap - they must be hidden.

Since the glue joint in this case is rigidly fastened, there is no need to wait for the glue to dry.

From a board 25 * 100 mm, we cut the slats to the width of the mattress (you can add 1-2 cm again). They are attached to the strips just made with an emphasis. Installation step - 10 cm, for each bar - 2 self-tapping screws on each side. A hole is pre-drilled for each self-tapping screw (the diameter of the drill is 1-2 cm less than the diameter of the self-tapping screw), the head should go into the wood.

Holes for fasteners are covered with putty, after drying they are sanded. Cutouts are made in the extreme slats for the installation of the legs.

DIY children's bed: assembly

Finally, we seal all chips and defects on the visible parts of the bed with putty, after it dries, we grind it to smoothness. Then we prime and paint in the chosen color. After painting, it remains only to connect the backs and the base under the mattress and we can assume that the baby bed is ready with your own hands.

You can connect the parts with the help of special fittings - brackets and curtains, or in a simple way - by nailing a corner, a block on which to support the assembled mattress shield.

The requirements for children's bedroom furniture are different for everyone. Someone prioritizes the utmost lightness and minimalism, giving preference to models on hollow bases, under which it is so easy to keep clean. Someone likes the ultimate functionality of each furniture module - it is these parents who are interested in how to make a bed with drawers with their own hands of a spaciously practical and comfortable design.

How to make a bed with boxes with your own hands, where to start

Before you make a bed with boxes with your own hands, you need to decide on a few points:

  • The width and length of the berth. The mattress can be used both in standard sizes and made to order. Usually, the length of a teenage bed varies between 1800-2050 mm, and the width of the berth is 750-1250 mm (from a single-bed option to a lorry one and a half).
  • The type of base. The mattress can "lie" on the bottom of the chipboard or lamellas - in this case, the bed box is load-bearing. Often the base is an independent metal frame on legs - an orthopedic base. In this case, the bed box gathers around it.
  • The number of boxes. One drawer can be built under the bed base - its design can be adapted to accommodate a guest bed. Or use the space for storing toys and build two or three drawers into the base.
  • Drawer extension type. It is possible to distinguish two options radically different in design: independent of the body, rolling out on wheels or fixed to the body, extending on guides. Each option has its own advantages. The only thing is, if the flooring in the nursery is laminate, I would advise you to abandon the wheel supports for practical reasons.

How to build a drawer under the bed with your own hands

Easier to assemble are inset drawer designs, independent of the bed frame itself.

The inset structure can also be single, monolithic, without division into two or three parts.

The orthopedic base provides a rigid connection to the embedding of boxes: it is necessary not only to "bypass" the support legs with the frame structure, but also to fit into the given height. As a rule, the height of the legs of the orthopedic base is about 190 mm, +/- a couple of centimeters for adjustment. But it is better to focus on an already purchased product, since the standards of local manufacturers may differ slightly.

The insert structure for drawers is performed in the same way, it is simply shortened by the amount of indentation of the legs-supports of the orthopedic base from the edge of the box. But it is easier to implement the option with independent boxes on wheels - there is no need to assemble an inset structure for them. It is enough to place the partition in the center to make it easier for the child to slide each drawer into its own "department".

Diy bed with drawers, an example of calculation according to the drawing of the basic model

As a basis for calculations, you can completely take a drawing of a children's bed with your own hands of the basic model considered. The only difference is that the front bar must be reduced in width so that the built-in drawers are deeper.

Of the design points, it should be noted:

  • The front plank is attached last, since it covers the upper part of the inset structure (the height of the insert is 300 mm, the plank is fixed at 280 mm from the floor).
  • The box is fixed above the floor level, the gap width above the floor is at least 10 mm (more if the floor is carpeted).
  • The bottom of the box must be reinforced with a stiffener if it will be used for storing heavy objects (toys) and can not be reinforced if it is planned to store a seasonal set of linen (blankets, pillows, rugs, etc.).

The calculation of the detailing of a child's bed with do-it-yourself boxes according to a given drawing will look like this.

The cut cards show that about two sheets of chipboard leave on a bed with drawers with your own hands.

On a model with an orthopedic base, the consumption will be less - after all, the bottom does not need to be done, the lamellas will serve as the base. The material consumption in case the boxes in the bed will roll out on wheels will remain about the same. Yes, there are certain savings due to the fact that the insert itself does not need to be assembled. But do not forget that the role of the bottom of the boxes on wheels in the bed will be played not by fiberboard, but by chipboard.

Expensive event for parents. You don't have to buy furniture to cut costs and furnish your kids' space. One of the available options is a crib, you can make it even if you don't have the skills.

Before proceeding with the manufacture of the crib, it is necessary to make a calculation taking into account its design and prepare the necessary materials. The bed made according to individual measurements will not let you down.

Accuracy must be observed when taking measurements.

Structural analysis and drawing

Selection of materials for assembly

When choosing materials, it is better to give preference to natural materials; solid wood and plywood are ideal for this purpose. The use of natural materials will save the child from toxic effects. You should purchase the necessary accessories, fasteners and other materials, taking into account the design of the bed.

Use only well-dried wood without visible damage or knots.

Necessary materials

The most expensive part of the cost will be the mattress. You should not save on buying a mattress, from
its quality depends on the health of the child.
An orthopedic mattress guarantees a comfortable sleep and relieves the problems of incorrect body position during sleep.

Where to start assembling the crib

When assembling, the screws must be tightened so that they do not stick out.

Assembling the laundry drawers

As soon as the base is prepared, you can start making cabinets. Usually there are 1-2 lockers with a sliding mechanism in the crib. The base is made of solid wood, and the bottom is made of plywood.

If the child is small for him, you can make a development rug yourself.

  1. The cut material is sanded and collected according to the drawing;
  2. Equip the lockers with a sliding mechanism, it is attached to self-tapping screws;
  3. To make the cabinets open conveniently, you need to attach the handles.

Back or head of the bed

Depending on the type of crib, it can be decorated with additional elements - a back or a headboard. The wooden backrest will save the child from touching the wall while sleeping and protect the wallpaper. While the headboard will allow you to comfortably position the pillow. The combined models provide for the placement of the back and head.

  1. According to the drawing, it is necessary to cut the solid wood according to the shape of the intended back. Backrest standard height: 70-90 cm;
  2. Before fixing the back or headboard, do not forget to sand everything with sandpaper;
  3. Instead of self-tapping screws, it is better to take long bolts as fastening materials.

It is better to leave the details of the headboard, footboard and backrest wooden, in this form the bed can be washed.

Finishing work

At that moment, when the crib is assembled with your own hands, you can start finishing it. This does not require any special delights. Natural wood is absolutely harmless to the health of the child. In order for its surface to be well preserved and acquire a smooth surface, wooden parts must be coated with a non-toxic varnish. If the design provides for bright shades of the bed, it can be painted with acrylic paint.

Do not paint the crib in an unventilated residential area where children are.

Types of cots

Choosing a baby bed in favor of a special design poses a daunting task for parents. Different bed models are classified according to functionality and dimensions:

  • cradle bed for newborns, size 90 x 45 cm;
  • standard cot-playpen measuring 120 x 60 cm;
  • crib for preschoolers with drawers 140 x 70 cm;
  • transformer bed size after transformation 190 x 80 cm;
  • bunk bed with drawers and ladder for lifting;
  • non-standard beds in the form of a sports facility.

The cradles and cribs in the form of a playpen are designed for children from birth to three years old. Using the schemes presented on the Internet, you can make any model or in accordance with an independently developed design. The crib painted white can be decorated with decoupage technique and a removable canopy made of harmoniously selected fabric.

A cot for children from 3 years old to primary school age will give comfort during sleep and rest. Spacious lockers with pull-out mechanisms will allow you to store in them

kids' things. Thanks to its simple design, it can be done in a few days. The presented model does not require additional decoration. Unpainted wood looks natural and natural. Bright pillows and soft toys will help to bring in bright colors.

A transforming bed will help out in a situation when it is necessary to save space. A transforming version of a bed for a child can be bought in a store or created with your own hands according to drawings. Bunk beds also allow you to save space in the children's room.

The upper tier of the bed must be equipped with a protective rail.

Beds of unusual shapes

Cots of unusual shapes are especially delightful for children.
It is a mistake to believe that an amazing sleeping place cannot be made by yourself. Using the drawings, you can make cots of a wide variety of shapes. Men who love working with wood can try their hand at making a car bed.

Having built a bed in the form of a sports facility, you can combine a play and sleeping place into one whole. A crib with a slide or a fairy-tale house will be appreciated by active children. Having studied the complex design, such a model can be made by hand. Use additional drawers and storage compartments to complement the sleeping area.

What material is the best to make a bed from?

The undoubted leader is natural wood of valuable species.

  1. The most common and available material is solid pine;
  2. Using alder will allow you to get a bed of noble colors;
  3. A beech bed will last for many years, it will not creak, crack and loosen;
  4. The beautiful structure of ash will give the piece of furniture a natural gloss;
  5. The use of solid oak will allow you to get an exquisite crib in which several generations of children can be raised.

A homemade bed with your own hands is a practical solution for arranging a nursery. The design of the presented models is quite simple, so a novice master can make it. Using the instructions, drawing and detailed video material, it is quite possible to make a bed for a child.
