Charcoal is used as fuel for kebabs, filters and medicines are made from it.

Usually, special charcoal kilns are used for the production of charcoal. The main condition for the operation of such a furnace is to ensure combustion of wood at a high temperature, but without oxygen. Without oxygen, the combustion reaction does not proceed completely, as a result of which the wood does not collapse.

To make charcoal at home, we need wood, from which we will receive coal. It will be better if you cut the wood into small briquettes, then the coal will be of high quality, and there will be less waste.

You also need firewood for making a fire and a metal container that will have a sealed lid. A 20-liter barrel is also suitable as a container.

Start by making a fire. It is better to stack the firewood on top of each other to make it easier to install the barrel. You can use bricks or concrete blocks as a support for the barrel. Peel the bark and cut the tree into small pieces so that later it will be easier to grind. If you do not clean the bark, corrosive gases will come out of the bark during distillation. Then put the wood briquettes to the top in a metal barrel. Put the container on the fire with a tightly closed lid. To prevent the heat from escaping initially, you can grease the gaps between the edges of the lid with resin. Make some small holes for gas to escape, otherwise explosion may occur. But the holes must be small so that the temperature in the barrel reaches 350 degrees. Keep the barrel of coal closed for some time, without removing it from the fire, even after the release of gases has stopped. The total time for distilling charcoal can last 2-2.5 hours. At the end, remove the barrel from the fire and also leave it without oxygen. The charcoal must cool down inside the container, because if you open the lid right away, the charcoal can ignite. As a result, the charcoal will be of even better quality.

The second way is much easier and you don't need to use any containers. Fold all the wood in a pyramid and light a fire. Do not use gasoline or other flammable substances when lighting up, otherwise the smell will remain in the coal. Use only natural products such as paper. Now wait until the fire burns out, and only red coals remain. Gently scoop them up and place them in a saucepan. As soon as all the coals are collected, it is necessary to tightly close the lid and shut off the oxygen supply so that the coals do not burn out. The whole process takes no more than 2 hours.

Blacksmiths usually use coal in furnaces, others use gas, and still others use charcoal.

I read that a good feature of charcoal is its environmental friendliness, cheapness and the ability to make charcoal at home.

I read a few DIY charcoal making tutorials and chose the easiest and cheapest method.

Step 1: Tools and Materials


Basic materials and tools:

  • lumber and charcoal
  • tool for sawing and splitting wood
  • metal container and a way to seal it

What I used:

  • Chainsaw (any saw will do)
  • Strong knife for chopping wood, steel wedge and sled, or long ax
  • Knife block
  • Large coffee can
  • Aluminum foil for can sealing

Step 2: Kolm, cut, fill





I have not attached photos of the wood preparation process, but I think you will already understand what needs to be done.

First, I sawed a tree trunk into stumps, in length slightly inferior to the height of a metal can, then I divided them into firewood about 2-3 cm thick.

The thickness of the wood is a very personal matter, and since this was my first experiment, I decided not to make it too thick. I filled the jar with logs as much as possible and covered it with aluminum foil. I made a small hole in the foil to allow moisture and wood gas to escape.

When wood is heated in the absence of oxygen, it releases wood gas, which is actually a very useful thing if you can collect it. Even engines work on it! If you make a fully sealed container of wood, you practically create a bomb - of course, nothing like that happens with the foil, but completely closed containers ... I think you can imagine what could happen.

Step 3: build a fire






Safety first! So make sure you have a bucket of water or a water supply hose handy.

I also have a rather large beard, and just recently I half burnt it. So guys with a beard, braid your beard or tuck it into your shirt. People with long hair can tie a braid or fold their hair. The main thing is just do not burn them, because it will take you a long time to grow everything again.

I started a fire with pine chips and small pieces of wood. After the fire was kindled, I reported oak wood to it. The traditional method of making coal takes patience, but I wanted to do it tonight, so I put a fan on the fire. After about half an hour, the tin with a foil lid was placed on the fire, and the next step could be proceeded.

Step 4: wait and watch




I covered the jar with wood and turned a fan on it. After 20 minutes, steam came out of the can. About an hour passed and gas began to escape from the hole in the foil instead of steam. This meant that the method was working and the wood began to char. After another hour or so, the flames on top of the can went out, which meant the wood gas had escaped and the process was almost complete.

With a couple of sticks, I pulled the canister out of the fire and put a layer of wet mud on top - this finally packed the lid. At this stage, the air would be conducive to burning wood, which we need to avoid. I waited another hour or so, opened the can and evaluated the result.

Step 5: open the bank, draw conclusions


I unpacked the chilled canister, removed the earth, pulled out the coal, and broke it to pieces. I was pretty sure the wood was charred and that's how it turned out! As a result, I got about 3 liters of coal.

My considerations:

  • I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of coal I received as I thought the can would be about half full when I open it.
  • If you don't have a coffee can, you can buy a paint can or get a bucket.
  • Make sure to use hardwood to make coal, as it has a higher energy density than softwood.

Most often, charcoal is bought, it is sold not only in specialized stores, but also at gas stations, as well as in supermarkets. But if you have a sufficient amount of your own firewood in your garden and there is a little space near the fireplace, then with almost zero costs you can get charcoal yourself, this will not be a time-consuming exercise, and it will not take much time.

Organization of charcoal production at home

First you need to find some old bucket, barrel or large tin container. You will also need a piece of sheet metal with which we will cover the container. It will be useful if the selected, purchased container has some kind of "ears" or handles, thanks to which the container can be easily manipulated, moved and turned over. Use a drill to make several holes on the bottom and sides (about 15-20 centimeters from the bottom of the barrel) of the container. Not far from the fireplace, we dig a small hole equal to the diameter of the selected container, we dig the depth to the level of the side holes.

We fill the tin container with unnecessary wood and put it on a fireplace with a grate, if it is not there, then you can use, for example, a couple of bricks or flat stones. Next, we ignite the wooden waste contained in the container. We are waiting for the end of burning, the wood will begin to darken slowly, but has not yet turned into coal. We put gloves on our hands so as not to get burned, with the help of "ears" or carrying handles we move the container into the prepared pit, cover the barrel with a lid so that the smoke remains inside and maintains the temperature there, and also does not bother us. We leave for several hours, or better overnight (until the barrel cools down). In the morning, the container will contain ready-made and high-quality charcoal. It is no different from the one we buy in the store.

The whole process of charcoal production (without preparing the container and space) takes about six, eight hours in absolutely unpretentious conditions, without special equipment. The production procedure can be modified in various ways. For example, immediately place the container in a dug hole with a small, strong mesh, then just throw soil around the barrel to restrict air access, then the lower fire will bend.

Making charcoal at home usually requires the use of hardwood lumber. The profitability of production depends on several factors, in particular, on the capacity of the container, as well as our desire and hard work. In one process, about five kilograms of coal can be obtained from a standard-sized barrel!

For kindling a furnace, some people use coal, some use gas, and some prefer to use charcoal.
I read about charcoal and identified three of its main positive qualities for myself: it burns cleaner than coal, costs an order of magnitude cheaper, and you can cook it yourself.

I looked at a few instructions on how to make charcoal yourself, and this method seemed to me the easiest and cheapest. I originally "dug up" it somewhere on the Internet a couple of years ago, but in that video, the guys used 210 liter barrels with pipes. I have no such steel canisters or closed barrels at my disposal. How did I get out of the situation? Now I will tell you everything in detail.

Tools and material



In general, we need:
  • Firewood and charcoal wood.
  • Tools for felling and splitting wood.
  • Metal container and everything you need to seal it.
What I used:
  • A cordless chain saw, although a regular hand one will do just fine.
  • Combat knife Ka-Bar for cutting small wood, wedge and hammer, although you can also use a knife for splitting shingles (as in my history of making a forge, so I will make a knife for splitting shingles from an old lawn mower blade).
  • A block of wood in order to hit the knife (or a knife for splitting shingles).
  • Red oak for kindling.
  • A coffee can as a container.
  • Aluminum foil for container sealing.

Chop, stab and throw in a jar






I was not able to capture everything properly on camera, because I lost my tripod somewhere, but I think you will understand everything anyway.
First, I sawed off red oak blocks to a length slightly less than the height of my coffee can, then I broke them into pieces about 20 mm thick.
I estimated the thickness by eye. Since I am planning to use these coals to light the forge, I thought that small blocks would not work for me. Considering, moreover, that everything was done as an experiment with an unknown result, I needed bars with the largest possible surface area for combustion.
Then I filled the jar with wood as tightly as possible, and then covered it with aluminum foil. I made a small hole in the foil to drain moisture and wood gas.
When wood smolders in the absence of oxygen, it emits wood gas, which, incidentally, can be useful on the farm. In principle, you can even refuel cars with this gas! It is because of the gases that a completely sealed container in our case will turn into a time bomb. The aluminum foil with a hole avoids this effect.

Making a fire






Safety comes first!
A bucket or other container of water nearby is a must. It rained for 2 days, but the fire can break out suddenly and very quickly, so you need to be ready to stop it at any second. I had about 40 liters of water on hand.
I started the fire in a steel homemade container that I made a couple of years ago in a welding course. I planned to make a brazier out of it.
I have a fairly long beard and have burned it before, so here's my advice to anyone who has long beards: braid them or tuck them into a shirt! I find a fishtail braid to be a good option, while traditional 3-strand braids tend to pull apart pretty quickly.
For those with long hair: Tie it up in a braid or bun from the back so as not to singe. It's not easy to grow them again. My hair now does not exceed 3 cm, so this question no longer bothers me.
So, I decided to cheat a little by using a gas blowtorch for ignition. For tinder, I used pine shavings from my workshop, and for lighting I took dry pine blocks - all this will help the red oak to ignite.
I made a fire and put an oak on top, but the fire burned weakly. The traditional method of charcoal cooking takes patience, but I really wanted to get it done until evening! That is why I turned a fan on the fire, and after about half an hour it completely covered the tree. It's time to move on to the next step.

Watching and waiting





I covered the can with poles and left the fan on to keep the burning temperature high.
After about 20 minutes, smoke came out of the can, but it was just water vapor, which I mentioned in the beginning.
In about an hour, wood gases started to flow. HOORAY! This means that everything is working as it should and the wood turns into charcoal! After an hour or so, the fire almost disappeared, and I decided to put some fire on the hole in the foil to make sure the wood gas was no longer emitted. It's almost done!
I removed the can from the fire with two rods and put some earth on top to completely seal the container - no air should enter there, otherwise, due to the pressure difference, it will allow the charcoal to smolder further.
I waited another hour, then opened the can and saw the finished product.

Result and final thoughts



I opened the cooled jar, cleaned off the dirt, dumped the charcoal and broke small pieces of it about 5 cm long. In fact, I just wanted to make sure that the wood was charred enough. And I was convinced of this! I ended up with about 3 cubic liters of pure charcoal!
My thoughts on experience:
Until I finish my forge, I will not be able to say for sure how good this coal is, and the material obtained will clearly not be enough. So I'll have to repeat this process a few more times to restock.
In fact, I was surprised at the amount of coal received - after the experiment done, the bank was only half full.
If you don't have a coffee can on hand but have some spare cash on hand, you can buy a paint can. I would recommend looking for one of those shiny metal canisters available from home improvement stores.
I advise using hardwoods as they tend to be denser than softwoods and will not produce as much resin and sap during smoldering.

How to make charcoal at home in a pit with your own hands

Even in ancient times, this method was used by our ancestors. It's easy enough to make coal yourself. First you need to dig a shallow hole. Then make it in the shape of a cylinder, carefully looking behind the vertical walls. Remember the following, that if the diameter is 75-80 cm and the depth is 50 cm, then you will have about 2 bags of charcoal. The bottom must be compressed so that later the soil does not mix with the finished products. Then, inside the pit, you need to make a fire and gradually add thin firewood. The bottom of the pit must be covered with wood, which will burn well. After they flare up, we are engaged in burning coal.

When the wood starts to burn out, stack the next batch on top, wiggle them with a pole, they must be stacked very tightly. Fold so that the hole is completely full. Remember, burning firewood by the amount of time depends: on their size and density, as well as on air humidity. It will take you 3 hours to completely fill the hole. Once the hole is full, cover it with green grass, then sprinkle the soil and compress. Under these conditions, the fully created charcoal will cool down in two days, then sift and pack it. So, the coal is completely ready.

How to make charcoal at home in a barrel with your own hands

How to make charcoal yourself? There is another way to create charcoal. In this case, you will need a metal barrel. Its size depends on the amount of coal you need. There are 2 ways to make this coal. In the first, we make a fire inside, and then the process is the same as in the pit. We put bricks vertically on the bottom, make a fire between them and carefully add firewood. After that, put a grate on the bricks and then put firewood on the same principle. Once the barrel is full, cover it with a sheet of iron, but leave a small hole. As soon as everything cools down, remove the iron sheet and take out the coals.

Charcoal in a barrel

In the second method, cover the barrel, which is completely filled with firewood, with a non-hot lid. We close it almost tightly. It is necessary to have small holes for the exit of gases. Then we place the barrel on a surface without soil. For example, put several bricks, and lay a sheet of durable metal on them so that the barrel can withstand. We need to make a fire between the bricks and start heating the barrel. Some time passes and a combustion process is formed, gas rises. As soon as the gases stopped coming out of the barrel, we leave it as it is. Then we remove from the heat and close the gap in the lid. Leave to cool completely. Your DIY charcoal is ready.

For the manufacture of charcoal, special incinerators with different power are used. The use of large furnaces brings in more coal than mobile ones. But they require high performance indicators for environmental safety. Mobile ovens produce little coal. They are often used where raw materials are available or on construction sites.
