Master class on making a floor lamp from available tools. DIY floor lamp assembly guide DIY floor lamps from scrap materials

People who do not know how to create things with their own hands always admire those who have the courage to do it, calling them creative personalities. And those who are engaged in home hand-made do not fully understand the reasons for such admiration, because not everything is so complicated. Especially if we are not talking about creating all the elements of future furniture from scratch, but only about the layout, fitting and author's decor.

Perhaps it is difficult to overestimate the influence of light in the interior. Lighting created at different levels, a well-thought-out scenario, can significantly affect the atmosphere, the general mood of the living space. In particular, floor lamps surprisingly create cozy islands in the living space, helping to properly zone it.

Making a do-it-yourself floor lamp is not just for you to sew pillowcases on pillows or put together picture frames. Nevertheless, the carpentry aspect is present here, and the electrics are involved, and the design moment cannot be canceled in any way. Let's find out in more detail how to make a floor lamp with your own hands.

Necessary materials for creating a floor lamp with your own hands

You can easily find the necessary materials in hardware store, an alternative is to use a partially old floor lamp.

 • You need to buy electrical cable, you can use an extension cord. - It is best to take a three-core wire, especially if the body of the future floor lamp will be made of metal.
 • It will take cartridge E27 models (most common).
 • It is recommended to choose lamp energy saving.
 • Stick of the required length, full pin... It is undesirable to choose wooden.
 • Something for grounds- stands.
 • Shade.
Making a floor lamp with your own hands

You took the time to create a floor lamp with your own hands, bought everything necessary materials - it's time to start the installation process. You should start by laying the electrical cable in the future leg of the floor lamp. Before this step, you need to connect the wire to the plug and socket. Check the quality insulation of all joints.

 • Making a lampshade with your own hands

It remains to create the most expressive part lighting fixture - lampshade. You can in the same hardware store ask the consultant for the availability of wire mesh. If there is one, you will need to roll it up in such a way that you get the diameter of the desired size. You can also create a wire frame for your lampshade. You need to make a cylinder out of it - in other words, connect several circles along.

When the "skeleton" of the future lampshade is already there, it is time for your interior designer. How to successfully arrange a floor lamp? First of all, it must match your setting. If it is very difficult to do this, try playing with contrasts. Build a decor that will clearly stand out from the general atmosphere and can claim the title of an art object.

 • DIY fabric lampshade for a floor lamp

Almost any fabric can be used for this business, from linen to durable denim. By the way, the latter can look very stylish in a bachelor or youth interior.

 • DIY knitted lampshade for a floor lamp

It is quite acceptable to knit a lampshade from large or small yarn, to beat it with decorative knitted elements. Such a lamp can be seasonal, cozy and will look warm during the cold season.

 • Fancy floor lamp shades

There are absolutely no rules in creating handmade lampshades. You can secure the wicker basket upside down and it will do its job well. Do you have an unnecessary large globe? Why not use half of it for the same tasks? Quite original, adventurous. You can also make a lampshade from a dozen petals, hearts, butterflies - in short, anything that can be laid out layer by layer so that you get an imitation of scales. It is impossible not to touch upon one of the oldest common methods - tying an inflatable ball with threads, fixing them with PVA glue. Once the structure dries up and the ball bursts, you are left with a sturdy sphere that can make a great homemade lampshade for your new floor lamp.

Floor lamps - one of the varieties of an additional light source, have a functional and decorative value. Colored and perforated lampshades not only create a special atmosphere, emphasizing the style of the interior, but also become an alternative to more powerful lighting fixtures, allowing you to apply directional light and save energy.

Lightness and mobility, as well as the ability to change appearance - there are two more advantages of floor lamps, in contrast to wall and ceiling lamps.

Layout and assembly of a floor lamp at home will not only save money, but also create a high-quality and unique product for yourself or as an original gift for loved ones.

Base for floor lamp

Before proceeding with creative work over a lampshade and other decor, it is worth learning how to make a floor pole for a floor lamp with your own hands. To do this, you need to design the dimensions of the product, and purchase blanks of the appropriate dimensions.

For work, you will need two boards and wooden beam, narrow copper pipe, electrical wire with plug, socket and lamp.

A step-by-step guide on how to make an angled pole lamp offers the simplest, yet reliable and safe solution. It is convenient to place such a tilted lamp next to upholstered furniture or by the bed.

The basis

Two boards are taken for gluing a stepped block: the thickness of the lower part should be twice as large as the upper one, they can be cut from standard boards of 50 and 25 mm. An example of the proportions of the width and length of rectangular base blanks with a rack height of 1.5 m: the lower part is 35x20 cm, the upper one is 30x15 cm.

The surface of the smaller part must be covered with wood glue and fixed exactly in the center, close to the edge along the width of the large part.

Rack

We make parts for the rack. With an offset of 5 cm from the two-layer edge of the base, using a drill with a nozzle, you need to make a hole in the diameter of 3 mm of the bar.

Next, with a small indent (depending on the height of the floor lamp), we drill a through hole for a copper pipe with an inclination of 60 degrees. After stepping back 25 cm from the end of the copper workpiece, close to the joint, you will need to drill a hole for the electrical wire.

Assembly

First, you should try on the parts without gluing to make sure that the holes are made correctly and the structure is stable. Then we fix the timber on the base with wood glue and let the workpiece dry. We pass the wire into the pipe and fix it on the riser. It remains to fix the elbow and the cartridge at the end of the pipe - and the frame of the floor lamp is ready.

For floor stand other materials can be used as well, but before doing the installation of the structure with your own hands, you need to carefully calculate the dimensions and at all stages check the stability of the rack and the reliability of the fasteners.

When secondary use materials (such as plumbing pipes, machine parts, furniture, etc.), care should be taken to clean and sand the surfaces.

Lampshade and decor

To decorate a floor lamp, you can use both ready-made lampshades and parts for lighting fixtures, or make them yourself, using all the variety of materials and handmade techniques.

Bases and posts can be made of plaster, furniture boards and rails, pipes and threaded fittings, tripods, hangers, etc. Hollow supports will allow you to completely mask the wires, in other cases this can be done, for example, with decorative wrapping made of ropes or straw.

The use of plastic springs will allow you to adjust the height of the floor lamp. The product can be equipped with switches and even a remote control.

Energy saving lED lamp, due to less, in comparison with spiral, heating and a variety of color shades - perfect option for floor lamps. They are safe and give you more room to experiment with lampshades made from unconventional materials - paper, wood, plastic.

Choosing an original lampshade for a DIY floor lamp, you need to adhere to the general idea and take into account the style of the interior. The product should look good even when turned off, so it is important to carefully finish all surfaces, paying attention to the details.

Any of modern styles interior decoration can offer its own vision of this lighting device, and you can see this by looking at the selection of photos of floor lamps from various design schools. But at the same time, the scope of use of floor lamps has not changed over the past century.

Especially floor-standing models should serve as additional lighting in living rooms, bedrooms and offices. That is, they should fit in proportionally and stylishly into the interior, becoming not only a decor, but also a functional part of the furnishings.

A purely decorative role for floor lamps is not suitable, without use they turn into an unnecessary thing, causing irritation. This factor must be taken into account, both when designing dimensions and when choosing a lampshade.

Fabric lampshades usually have a wire frame. The fabric is stretched from the inside, the outside is wrapped with braid on the wire. The lampshade can also be made from any suitable capacity - for example buckets, using perforations.

In some cases, it is better to put emphasis on the design and convenience of the counter, adding decors that have minimal impact on the light flow. These can be glass, plastic, ceramic or metal shades open at the bottom, as well as wire and lattice decors.

Photo of floor lamps with your own hands

When there is a desire to change the decor in the apartment and add a little originality to it, start with the little things. Try changing the lampshade and you will be amazed at the transformation of your family nest.

And if you manage to find an original model that differs from analogues, then the changes will impress not only you, but also your guests.

True, unique lampshades cost a lot of money, because the piece works of eminent masters for a penny cannot be purchased.

But after all, no one bothers you to create your own unique masterpiece from cheap, and sometimes even waste materialsthat will look much better than the samples in the store.

All you need is simple materials, a bit of patience and a flight of imagination, and we will tell you how to make a lampshade with your own hands.

Materials

You can create a masterpiece from everything that you have at hand: fabric, paper, thread, twine, wire, plastic bottle, beads or beads.

In general, absolutely everything will do, even what you usually send in the trash bag.

Don't believe me? Just see the photo of the lampshade.

Frame

If you have a frame from an old lampshade, then this is just great.

However, you should not be upset if one was not found, because you can create a frame yourself from ordinary wire.

Copper, aluminum, steel - anything that you can combine into a single structure will do.

The metal frame of a classic lampshade consists of three rings and six bridges between them. The small ring is a holder that connects to the larger ring with three straps.

The same, in turn, is connected with jumpers to the last ring. The following photos will help you figure out the design.

From fabric

When a frame for a lampshade is available, the easiest way to create your masterpiece is to wrap the base in fabric. For this you will need:

 • paper (newspaper);
 • scissors;
 • the cloth;
 • chalk or pencil;
 • threads.

Wrap the frame with newspaper so as to form a pattern out of it. Then transfer the resulting shape to the fabric using chalk, adding 1 cm per seam on each side.

Make a pattern, cut off the edges and sew the sides, forming a cover on the base of the future lampshade. We fold the upper and lower edges of the "cover" in such a way as to close the rings of the frame and fix it with a seam.

Note!

Voila, your floor lamp shade is almost complete. It remains to add a few highlights to your taste, making it unique.

From threads

How to make a lampshade when there is no frame? As easy as pie.

Take balloon without drawings, glue, thread, marker and start creating.

First you need to inflate the balloon and mark the upper and lower boundaries of your future masterpiece on it. Then take the threads and wrap the ball with them, trying not to protrude beyond the marked contours.

Apply glue diluted with water 1: 1 to each layer of thread. When the thickness of the wound thread satisfies you, fix the cut edge and hang the ball to dry. After 3-4 hours, the threads will dry. Then pierce the ball and carefully detach it from the walls of the finished lampshade.

Additional charm to the thread lampshade can be given by leaves and flower petals woven between the layers of threads.

Note!

The ball, decorated with sparkling beads, also looks original. In general, watch and get inspired.

From paper

Plain sheets of office paper, glossy magazines, a cheap newspaper, an unnecessary book or ordinary notebook, paper towel or napkin - these are all future lampshades.

It doesn't matter if there is a frame or not, the main thing is that there are scissors, glue and paper. One thousand and one versions of such lampshades can be described with the words "cut and stick".

The main thing is not to forget a few simple rules:

 • a paper lampshade is safest to use together with economy bulbs, which heat up much less than incandescent bulbs;
 • the diameter of the lamp shade should be large so that the paper does not heat up unnecessarily;
 • for a bright room, you can make a lampshade from thick paper, but for a dark one you need a thin one that transmits light well;
 • be careful with the color. For example, red or yellow paper will add warmth to the room, green and blue - cold.

Well, that's all. Charge yourself with new ideas, arm yourself with improvised means and go ahead, to light changes that bring warmth and comfort to your home.

Note!

DIY lampshade photo

It is customary to call a floor lamp a tall portable (mobile) household lamp, table or floor. It is believed that if its height H is more than twice the largest diameter Da of the lampshade, then it is no longer a lamp, but a floor lamp. However, the geometric facet in this case turns out to be very vague. Therefore, when defining a floor lamp, it is better to proceed from its aesthetic value: unlike a table lamp, a floor lamp can become one of the most important elements of interior design and even become a key one (see photo below); especially when he shines in a dim room.

Assembling a floor lamp completely with your own hands means not just decorating a room, but expressing yourself and your vision of its appearance, without having to worry about choosing ready-made samples. Of which, most likely, none will completely please you. It is not difficult to make a floor lamp, but since it is narrow and tall, it is necessary to ensure its stability. Most of the article is devoted to the description of suitable technological methods for this; regarding the general design, we will confine ourselves mainly to visual examples and instructions for their technical implementation at home.

When designing our own unique and inimitable floor lamp, let's go from the bottom up: from the stand along the counter to the lampshade. We will dwell on how to make a lampshade for a floor lamp, because First of all, the lampshade of a floor lamp is larger than a table lamp. Secondly, at the same time, it should be lighter - to ensure stability - and stronger or very simple and cheap to manufacture, in case the floor lamp does tip over. Thirdly, the lampshade of a floor lamp must have good lighting properties, since at times the floor lamp must, in whole or in part, provide general lighting as well. And, finally, the lampshade of a floor lamp should be beautiful - it means the same on a floor lamp as the whole floor lamp in the interior.

Design

A floor lamp is designed in the same way as a table lamp, and making a floor lamp on your own is not at all difficult, given the following: when developing a design, you need to keep in mind the contradiction between the mechanics of a floor lamp and its aesthetics; in a table lamp it is not so clearly expressed. Namely: mechanically, the floor lamp should be as heavy as possible at the bottom and lighter at the top. The low position of the center of gravity will ensure its proper stability on a support of a small area and a slow, smooth fall when overturning - you can catch it in time. However, aesthetically, visually, the top of the floor lamp should absolutely dominate the foot. To some extent, this condition contributes to the fulfillment of the first - a large light lampshade, when overturning, will further slow down the fall due to its aerodynamic resistance.

Desktop

Relatively low floor lamp design (H / Da<3,5), напр.

Low floor lamp design

An excellent home-made decoration (decorative casing) of the rack is made of polymer clay (plastic, cold porcelain) according to a template from PET bottles or pieces of polystyrene strung on the rack. Clay is available in a variety of colors; in principle and completely with your own hands. Dried in a combined way: before initial curing at room temperature, and then to full strength under a stream of air from a household hair dryer, polymer clay is very strong in a layer of 2-3 mm; you can also make a lampshade from it, see below, and as for the stand of a floor lamp made of plastic, it, almost empty inside, just combines light weight with visual significance.

Note: the decorative cover of the rack can be any to your taste, or not at all, but remember - mechanically heavy bottom and light top!

Another decor trick

With the help of plastic, the decorative design of the floor lamp stand can be made transparent, made of silicone. In this case, polymer clay is used as a material for a destructible injection mold.

How a transparent stand for a floor lamp is made from silicone with your own hands is shown in Fig. Explanations are required mainly for pos. 3-5:

 • While the plastic shell is still soft, 3-6 small (approx. 2 mm) holes are made at the bottom of it for the outflow of the material of the lost-wax boob (shown by blue arrows in pos. 3);
 • Smelt the blockhead when the plastic shell is completely dry at room temperature (2-3 days);
 • To melt the dummy, the workpiece is placed in a baking sheet, etc. pallet;
 • The blockhead is melted with a household hairdryer at full power, in smooth circular movements from bottom to top;
 • After melting the dummy, the holes at the bottom of the resulting casting mold are sealed with that de plastic and wait for it to dry completely;
 • To fill the mold with silicone, a PVC or, better, PE tube is put on the spout of the tube;
 • The mold is filled with silicone layer by layer in circular motions, 2-3 levels of "sausages" per layer;
 • To avoid bubbles, each subsequent layer of silicone is introduced when the previous one spreads;
 • Starting from the 2nd layer, to accelerate the spreading, you can drop a drop (no more!) Of table vinegar on the just introduced;
 • When the silicone is completely solidified, the plastic mold is carefully broken.

This method has two disadvantages. The first is the solidification rate of silicone 2 mm / hour. How long will the 1.7 m rack dry, count yourself. Second, it is possible to obtain a bubble-free silicone fill in this way only by using a better quality material and gaining experience, for which you have to spoil a couple of smaller blanks. However, this is a relative disadvantage: bubble silicone castings sometimes look good too.

Note: A completely transparent silicone floor lamp stand can be made by using a rigid acrylic tube as its supporting core. Glass is not suitable - it is fragile, and you cannot cut the thread for the lamp holder on it.

Floor

Stability is of particular importance for a floor lamp; especially if it is cantilever, with a luminaire placed outside the support platform, possibly movable in 1-2 planes and fixed in a given position. In this case, one has to sacrifice either convenience, making the base of the floor lamp small, but so heavy that it can be rearranged to fit with hoists or telphers, or stability and light adjustment possibilities, pos. 1 and 2 in Fig.

A fairly comfortable and stable floor lamp with dimming can be made in a steampunk style. In human terms, this means - from the details of the old mechanics, but it will not fit into every interior, pos. 3. And sometimes in attempts to combine design efforts with safety and ergonomics requirements, products are born that can scare the machines in the factory floor, pos. 4

A floor lamp combined with a bedside table (pedestal-floor lamp) or a rack (sideboard-floor lamp) is quite stable, see fig. A curbstone-floor lamp can be made with a cantilever lamp without fear and any calculations. For a budget single room or a small bedroom, this is an ideal solution: if desired, the light is placed either above the bed, or above an armchair or table, by turning the console.

If you want the floor lamp to look exactly like a floor lamp, stand by itself on the floor and be rearranged without tension, then you can make it a fairly heavy stand according to the diagram in Fig. below. Visible parts are made of wood or other good looking and easily processed material, and the weighting plate (approx. 180x180 in plan) can be any - uneven, rusty - because she is invisible. The carrier is attached to the plate as you like - on a thread, by welding, if only it is strong. As we can see, the decorative base and overlay in such a scheme will not experience destructive stresses, even if the floor lamp is knocked over by a kick.

How to choose a cartridge

It is technically not always possible or difficult to fix the lampshade on the stand of the floor lamp securely and so that it does not spoil the view. For example, although plastic is strong, it is rather fragile, and it is almost impossible to visually “refine” soldering onto a shiny bare tube. Therefore, the responsibility for holding the lampshade often has to be assigned to the bulb holder in the floor lamp.

A regular pendant lampholder (on the left in the figure) can only be used if the lamp shade is attached to the stand; then it is screwed onto the thread of the carrier pipe with a shank. To replace a light bulb, you will have to crawl into the lampshade with your hand, and the likelihood of breaking it when overturning is high. True, in this case, the lamp with the holder is better protected, so it is advisable to use the pendant holder with a floor lamp with a stand made of a sufficiently strong and viscous material, for example. made of wood, and attach the lampshade to it.

Cartridges with union nuts-skirts (on the right in the figure) for fixing the lampshade are preferable in all other cases. A cartridge with threaded skirts is attached to the rack with the same M10 or M12 shank; for a floor lamp, the latter option is more suitable. If a floor lamp with such a cartridge topples over, first of all the skirts break, therefore, for mounting on the cartridge, the lamp shade frame (see below) should be made as light and elastic as possible.

Shade

A lampshade for a floor lamp can be made on a frame or frameless, soft or hard. Skillfully executed, these options in any combination are able to provide the necessary performance characteristics of the lampshade, incl. resistance to damage and protection of the lamp holder and design possibilities.

Wireframe

It seems that everyone knows what a lampshade frame is. A floor lamp shade is generally the same as any other for a lighting lamp, and must meet the same conditions. However, due to the lower stability of the floor lamp and its greater susceptibility to damage, additional requirements are imposed on its lampshade, see above. Frame lampshades suit them best.

The most durable frame lampshade in the form of a truncated cone. It consists of the lower and upper rims (hoops), ribs that hold the upper rim, braces (rods) that hold the frame itself on the rack, and possibly a ring for attaching to the cartridge. Material, except for the fastening ring - steel wire 1-2 mm; the ring is made of sheet steel 0.35-1 mm.

The dimensions of the conical lampshade of the floor lamp are given in pos. 1 and 2 fig. From the point of view of lighting qualities, when changing dimensions, it is desirable to maintain proportions. For example, if the diameter of the lower rim is taken, say, 250 mm, then the diameter of the upper rim will be 250/260 = 1.5625x100 = 156 mm, and the height, in the same way, 170x1.5625 = 265 mm. Although, of course, preference in these circumstances should be given to design: from incorrect proportions, the appearance deteriorates more than lighting.

Note: the most durable lampshade is with a fastening ring extended 20-30 mm downward (pos. 2a), but because the fastening of a high floor lamp is then clearly visible, then the fastening ring of its lampshade is often, on the contrary, pushed up the same amount, pos. 2b.

The power circuits of frame lampshades are given in pos. 3-5. Their comparative characteristics are as follows:

 • Rigid (pos. 3) - the lampshade perfectly protects against damage when you fall, but very badly - a cartridge with a lamp. The ribs show through, even if the lampshade sheathing is rigid made of plastic, pos. 6. It is possible to avoid translucency of the ribs only by decorating the lampshade with a volumetric overhead decor (pos. 7), but then the floor lamp will become suitable only for local lighting. Technologically the most simple, it can be made by a novice craftsman without experience. It is highly desirable to attach to the rack.
 • Semi-rigid (pos. 4) - if the skin is 2-layer thin (pos. 8) or knitted (pos. 9), the ribs do not show through. The cartridge does not break and does not break itself if the floor lamp is accidentally overturned, but it will not withstand a deliberate overturning by a strong push, and the cartridge will turn off. Technologically complex, because it is necessary before rigid assembly (see below) to precisely align vertically the centers of the lower and upper rims.
 • Semi-soft (non-stretching, pos. 5) - the ribs do not show through if the sheathing is made of sufficiently dense fabric (pos. 10). Technologically, it is the simplest - the hoops center themselves. When the floor lamp falls, it does not break itself, unless you need to straighten the rims, but it will certainly break the cartridge. For console floor lamps and / or providing general lighting as well, it is not very suitable.

How to make a frame lampshade

The parts of the frame lampshade are connected by soldering, except for attaching the mustache of the guy wires to the cartridge ring, where a preliminary mechanical connection is required before it. Solder - ordinary, POS of any brand, fluxes - phosphoric acid and light rosin (not burnt); soldering iron - from 60 W.

Phosphoric acid solution for brazing is sold in electrical and radio stores. It is a medium-strength acid, not volatile, not particularly toxic, so only latex gloves will be needed from PPE. Part of the store solution will need to be used to prepare a 6% wash. You will also need a thin bare copper wire. The sequence of operations for assembling the lamp shade frame on soldering is shown in Fig:

 • The parts are bent in advance in shape (see below), their areas for soldering are cleaned with a fine sandpaper and the remnants of the image are removed with a foam rubber swab.
 • The ends / areas to be soldered are etched for 3-5 minutes in a 6% orthophosphoric acid solution (pos. 1).
 • After etching, the parts are washed intensively (quickly moving) for 0.5-1 min in clean water, preferably distilled, pos. 2.
 • The prepared parts are immediately, still wet, applied to each other (pos. 3) and wrapped around the junction with copper wire (pos. 4), without touching the parts with bare fingers or something greasy or dirty.
 • 2-3 drops of soldering acid solution, pos. 4, or active flux paste.
 • If the first flux is acidic, pick up rosin on the tip of the soldering iron and heat the connection until all the acid boils away and is replaced by rosin (item 5). You must not interrupt the operation and allow the rosin to burn!
 • They pick up solder on the soldering iron and solder the joint, pos. 6.

Assembly

When assembling the frame, do not rush to solder immediately. 20-25 minutes exposure after copper winding to dry will not affect the strength of the rations, if the air in the room is clean and not excessively dusty. Therefore, at first, the frame is assembled only on copper, its evenness, alignment of the hoops are checked, and only then all the joints are soldered at once.

The assembly of the frame begins with fixing the mustache of the stretch marks in the ring for the cartridge (item 3 in the figure), if any; squeeze the mustache loops with pliers. If the frame will be attached to the rack, it will be necessary to prepare in advance a wooden boss imitating its head with blind holes for the mustache of the stretch marks. The mustache is inserted into these temporary nests, wedged with matches or toothpicks, aligned in horizontal corners (yes, that's right!), And only then the frame is assembled.

The covering of the assembled frame is made in the same way as the lampshade of a table lamp, about which there are corresponding publications. Here we will only mention that the simplest classical way of wrapping a conical lampshade is with a textile tape, pos. 4. And under the figured (shaped) frame (pos. 5) it is not at all necessary to make a complex sewing product according to the patterns, especially since the seams will show through. You can also cover the shaped lampshade with one fabric sleeve on ribbons, pos. 6 and 7.

Note: sometimes lampshade frames are made of aluminum wire - it is light and can be straightened by hand. Soldering aluminum is currently not difficult - special solders and fluxes are on sale. If you intend to do with ordinary rosin and POS, then aluminum parts for soldering can be copper-plated using the old "pioneer" method, see fig. on right. Instead of a battery, they take a telephone charge or a similar power source (IP) - 3-9 V, from 400 mA. Copper wire is wrapped around the toothbrush, pushing it across between the rows of tufts of bristles. The wire is needed thicker, from 0.5-0.6 mm, i.e. it is its material that is consumed to create the copper layer. Sprinkle the place for soldering with copper sulfate powder (optional). The brush, wrapped and connected to the IP, is dipped in electrolyte - a strong (deep blue) solution of the same copper sulfate, and the part is rubbed with effort.

Frameless

Frameless lampshades are either molded from plastic at the factory, or made independently from polymer clay or materials at hand. The first, in general, is pop of a cheap kind. A real masterpiece can be made of plastic using a lost-wax blockhead, see eg. the jellyfish lamp in Fig. at the beginning, similar to silicone casting. Only in this case, after the dummy is melted, the plastic shell is not filled or broken, but is trimmed and decorated, if necessary. But such technology is complex, expensive, and those who own it probably know everything that is written in this article and more.

There are countless types of amateur lampshades made from scrap materials, but only a few samples meet the minimum requirements for a floor lamp shade. For example, a thread lampshade, pos. 1 in fig. It softens the light perfectly. The light transmission of a filament lampshade is small, so a lamp in a floor lamp with such a lampshade needs a bright one, but now there are a lot of LED bulbs on sale that consume little electricity and heat very little.

And to make a lampshade out of threads, you just need a balloon inflated and lubricated with petroleum jelly, and to it - the simplest device for pulling the thread through PVA glue, pos. 2. A hole with a diameter of 41 mm for mounting on a cartridge is cut in the finished lampshade. When the floor lamp falls, the cartridge always remains intact, and the dented lampshade is straightened with your fingers; you may need to grease with PVA.

It has similar operational qualities, and in terms of lighting it is superior to a filament lampshade made of plastic spoons, see next. fig .:

On the basis of the bottle, a hanging lampshade is obtained, as on the right in Fig. A large lampshade made of floor lamp spoons can be glued on a 5-liter plastic baklag, see eg. Master Class

About paper lampshades

Nice soft, but bright enough light, give LED lamps in paper lampshades. Their main drawback - fire hazard - is a thing of the past along with incandescent lamps. But others - fragility, instability to moisture and susceptibility to pollution - remained. Therefore, for a paper lampshade of a floor lamp, you need to take not writing, drawing or wrapping paper, but paper products for the needs of the food industry or catering establishments, for example. disposable paper plates; they will last a long time in a lampshade, see video.

To make the apartment as comfortable as possible for living, it can be attractively and originally arranged by implementing all kinds of design ideas. One of these is to make a floor lamp with your own hands, it's a floor lamp.

In the last century, such a device was a common lighting device, now it is in demand both as a designer and as a functional interior object. If you approach its creation creatively, then the room will immediately transform.

Floor lamp functions in the interior

Thanks to the installation of a floor lamp, you can visually change the entire room of your room. The functions of this device are as follows:

 • accentuation of a particular area in the room. For example, you can highlight an armchair, sofa, or other piece of furniture;
 • giving a special atmosphere to the room;
 • combining several styles.

And the good thing about the floor lamp is that, if necessary, you can always move it to another place. This will allow, if necessary, to change the situation in your home without rearrangements and repairs.

Necessary for work

To make a floor lamp with your own hands, you need to decide in advance on the material of manufacture. This could be:

Having decided on the key material, you should prepare all the necessary materials. The structural elements are as follows:

Of the tools you will need:

The complete list of tools depends on what material is used for the production of the floor lamp. It is supplemented at its own discretion.

Elements and their assembly

No matter what materials are used to assemble a floor lamp, it includes three key elements: a leg, a stand and a lampshade. To facilitate your work, it is recommended that you prepare a drawing in advance indicating the exact dimensions of each part.

The lamp holder can be made on the basis of wood or plastic. The shape of the base can be any, the main thing is that the stand holds the entire structure well. After assembling the base, connect the cable to the electrical plug and socket. It should be borne in mind that all joints on the wires must be insulated. The stand is then connected to the electrical components.

Hollow metal is best for the leg. It is lightweight, fire resistant and able to support the entire structure. In order for the floor lamp to be safe, it is better not to make a leg of wood... An electrical cable is held inside it, this can be done before the leg is attached to the base.

Most of the lamp is ready. It remains only to make a lampshade and decorate it.

Lampshade and its decor

The most creative part of the work is making a lampshade. The stand and the leg are made strictly according to the drawings in almost all cases, but the lampshade is always unique. It is he who gives the product this or that style. For example, classic, hi-tech, Japanese and any other.

You can make a lampshade with your own hands from many scrap materials, for example:

 • paper;
 • fabrics;
 • tree branches;
 • plastic bottles and more.

The lampshade manufacturing scheme is the same in most cases. The shape is set using a wire. It is better to take a tough one that will hold it well. Side elements in the form of paper, fabric or branches connected to each other are attached to this form.

During work, everything must be done as carefully as possible, the places of fixation of structural elements should not be very noticeable. But if the accuracy did not work out the first time, then the flaws can be hidden with the help of decorative elements.

Everyone chooses whether to decorate the lampshade or not. It all depends on the material of its production. For example, if it is made of branches, then they are decor and there is no need to complement this.

In other cases, you can decorate the structure with elements based on the following materials:

If you have drawing skills, then a paper or fabric lampshade can be supplemented with painting. There are a lot of ideas for creating a unique lampshade for a lamp. Among them:

 • based on the old globe;
 • an inverted wicker basket;
 • from petals;
 • artificial butterflies or hearts;
 • imitation of scales based on small elements;
 • an inflatable ball trimmed with threads and not only.

But when choosing a certain material for finishing the lampshade or wanting to embody this or that non-standard idea, you need to remember that the light should not hide. Any finishing to create an attractive floor lamp must be thought out so that the room is sufficiently lit.

Original ideas

In addition to the basic materials for the assembly of a homemade floor lamp, others can be used, thanks to which the product will have a more original and attractive look.

In particular, some people make a floor lamp based on polymer clay. This material is good because it is easy to process, dries quickly and lends itself well to decor. The base is made from a roll of paper or a paper box. What the base will be depends on what the lampshade will be.

The clay must be slowly squeezed onto a piece of paper or cardboard and left to dry completely. And when the base is removed, you can further decorate the lampshade at your discretion. Polymer clay can be replaced with putties, liquid nails, construction sealants and more.

Another original option for making a lighting device is from an old cereal vase. However, this is difficult to do, since the material is fragile, and making holes in it is very problematic.

On the neck of the vase, you will need to attach a metal lid on which a hollow pin will be installed. It will serve as a tripod. To keep the structure stable the cover must be secured with stopswhich are sized to match the widest section of the vase.

A cord is passed through the hollow pin, it passes through the hole in the lid and goes out through the hole at the bottom of the side of the vase. A plug and a socket must be attached to the wire. To keep the lamp stable, sand can be poured into the vase. The lampshade is made on the basis of a wire covered with linen or fabric.

Homemade lamps are recommended to be installed only in living rooms, bedrooms, hallways and other places where there is no high humidity. Accordingly, they are not suitable for bathrooms and toilets. It is unlikely that it will be possible to provide such devices with reliable protection against moisture on their own, so it is better not to risk it.

Making a floor lamp with your own hands is not so difficult. The main thing is to follow the instructions and follow the recommendations for its manufacture. If you show your imagination, you can make a unique design object from inexpensive materials at hand that will decorate any room.
