Rocking chair on your own at home. We use the pendulum mechanism in the manufacture of the glider

A rocking chair is a very necessary and comfortable thing that helps to relax while relaxing, or, conversely, to concentrate while working. In the furniture market, you can choose this piece of furniture for different tastes and for different price categories.

But there is a more reliable and less expensive option - to make a rocking chair yourself at home. It is important to carefully calculate and measure all the details, because if the exact balance is not observed, the chair will either not move or tip over on its side.

The main types of rocking chairs

Below are photos of rocking chairs of different types.

An excellent option for a private home would be a massage rocking chair - it will not only give your interior modern style, but also has great functionality!

Look at the photo how the massage rocking chair fits beautifully in the interior:

Armchair on skids

The chair is the most popular among users, that is, it has radius skids. Such a rocking chair is distinguished by its simple design and rather simple assembly technique.

The disadvantage of such a chair is that it will not be possible to swing strongly, as it will simply tip over forward or backward.

Armchair with variable curvature

Armchair with variable curvature eliminates tipping over. It is the most comfortable to use and allows almost any landing height.

Armchair on elliptical runners

The chair on elliptical runners is equipped with bumpers to prevent tipping over.

Multifunctional armchair

The multifunctional chair has another name "3 in one". Such a piece of furniture, if necessary, can be turned into a sunbed, but its dimensions are quite overall, so use is available only in relatively large rooms.

Materials for manufacturing

Usually rocking chairs are made of wood, as the metal is too heavy for such a construction. Most often, beginners assemble a plywood rocking chair without violating the following recommendations:

  • the plywood of the middle layer should be much thicker than for the edges;
  • it is necessary to use predominantly waterproof glue, or when using PVA, it is better to fix the parts with small carnations;
  • all connections are treated with glue, securing them with several self-tapping screws on both sides;
  • it is reasonable to protect the surfaces on which the entire mass rests with rubber or strong wooden slats in order to avoid plywood chipping from the load.
  • for greater strength, the finished structure must be treated with a special emulsion or water-based varnish.

Of the tools useful electric jigsaw, screwdriver, drill and hammer.

A forged rocking chair, of course, can only be made by a specialist, since special equipment and premises are required.

Of course, it is possible to make such a chair by welding metal profile pipes that resemble wicker rocking chairs. But this option is more suitable for the garden street area.

Also in the garden you can place a lounger with an awning (like a swing), which is a little more difficult to make, but it will be a lot of fun to use!

For home coziness and comfort, it will be more aesthetic to use a tree, decorating it with wicker rattan rods.

A rocking chair for children is also easy to arrange, but its proportions will differ from the adult version. Making it yourself is not at all difficult even for a beginner.

Important steps and rules of work

Before you make a rocking chair with your own hands, you need a competent drawing! Most often, self-taught masters find ready-made drawings of a rocking chair on the Internet, but it is worth considering the mass of the largest person who will use it in order to avoid misunderstandings in the future.

Note!

And then, on occasion, it will be possible to put a pillow on the seat, for greater comfort and avoid sharp rocking.

Beginning masters may not immediately succeed perfect option, even if all dimensions of the rocking chair are respected. This can easily be corrected by balancing the product.

The rear overhang can be made heavier by simply joining the rear ends of the skids with a stick in a "U" shape. So the rocking chair will be easier to go and "not shove" when swinging.

When tilting the chair back, accordingly, it is necessary to attach the weights to the front overhang.

Required pads for chair rails

On the runners of the rocking chair, it is imperative to install pads that prolong its durability and make the furniture wear-resistant.

  • you need to turn the chair upside down;
  • bar the right sizes heat up quite strongly with a special hairdryer;
  • then gently press the hot blank to the skid and wrap it with a dense braid;
  • we repeat a similar action with an adjacent skid;
  • after waiting for the final cooling of the blanks, we glue them with waterproof glue;
  • we fix the lining with small carnations along the entire length;
  • after a maximum of three days, when the glue is completely dry, temporary fasteners can be removed. Then finally fix the ends with self-tapping screws;
  • the heads of the self-tapping screws must be carefully rubbed with a putty prepared from sawdust of the same material (wood), mixing them with glue.

Note!

DIY rocking chair photo

The rocking chair is a symbol of comfort, harmony and peace of mind. Unfortunately, buying this product is not a cheap idea. Prices start from 5000 rubles and above. However, it is quite possible to make it yourself. In this case, you can think over your design project and design.

How to design correctly?

There is a large selection of ready-made drawings on the Web. However, when using them, keep in mind that they may be designed for certain people and are not intended for a wide range of people. To make the chair comfortable and meet individual needs, study the kinematics. Briefly described, the stability and convenience of the rocking chair depends on the location of the center of gravity of a person relative to the center of the generating circle. Remember e If these two points coincide, then the so-called dead equilibrium is observed at which the chair does not swing. Such a coincidence is rare, but it happens. If the center of gravity is higher than the center of the circle, then the structure will be unstable. To avoid such a scenario, the rocking chair is designed for the tallest and heaviest person in the family.

Remember that too sharp rocking can always be softened with a pillow under the back and on the seat.

Making skis

It is on the runners that the comfort and smoothness of the swing depend. Consider two ways to make them:

  • The first option is simple and does not require much time.. We make skis from plywood 1.5 cm thick, no less. Using the pattern and the drawing, we cut out two blanks. We grind them . We cut grooves in the legs of the chair for the skids with a depth of 7-10 cm. We install the skis. When installing, it is necessary to achieve complete symmetry. Having achieved harmony, we make through holes in the place of their contact with the legs of the chair. We process them with glue and insert a wooden spike. The skids are ready.
  • Second option. We make the runners from a square meter bar with a side of 4.5 cm. We cut out the grooves for the legs of the chair. We prepare the legs of the chair for their landing in the grooves on the skis. Soak the bars in hot water. When the tree becomes pliable, we bend the runners into the desired shape and leave to dry. We process the joints with glue and install dry skids on the legs. Skis are ready.

If there is no ready-made drawing at hand, then you can make it yourself. The construction of the profile of skids of variable curvature is done in several steps:

  • Select the center point of the circle.
  • We choose a fixed angle, usually it is equal to 10 degrees.
  • We draw a line that exceeds the radius of the center of the circle by 2-3% and mark a point.
  • Further, we increase the radius at each turn according to the law of a geometric progression. The indicator is taken equal to 1.02 or 1.03. We also raise the center of the circle after each rotation according to the same law.
  • We connect the obtained points with the help of a pattern with a smooth line.
  • The runner profile is ready. The scale is better to take 1 to 5 or more.

A rocking chair is unlikely to be perfect the first time, so the resulting product must be balanced. A poorly swaying seat requires weighting the rear overhang. This problem can be solved with a U-shaped beam connecting the ends of the skids. Loads must be placed in the beam. It also happens that the rocking chair falls back. In this case, you need to weight it in front. A footboard or weight attached to the underside of the foot will help in achieving balance. In some cases, it may be necessary to change the shape of the skids.

Most popular options

Before you take on a chair project and make it yourself, you need to study existing species. There are several product concepts depending on the needs of consumers:

  • With radius skids. The first version of the rocking chair that arose in everyday life. Received its popularity due to the simplicity of design and technology. In most cases, it has a low landing, associated with unstable balance when swinging. Overturning is possible at large amplitudes. To avoid it, the runners are made with a closing horizontal arc.
  • With skids of variable curvature. Their main advantage is the impossibility of capsizing. Suitable for creating rocking cradles, as they guarantee safety and comfort.
  • Armchair nirvana. There are two types: spring and ellipse. Rolling is smooth in both cases. However, there is a big difference in manufacture and use. Spring models require special materials: high-quality wood or spring steel. In addition, they are unsafe and inconvenient to use. The gap between the skid and the spring is clogged with dirt and you can pinch your fingers in it. The ellipse versions do not guarantee tipping, but have a very light and pleasant rocking. You can solve the problem by installing fenders. Ellipse rocking chairs with an awning never capsize.
  • Rocking chair 3 in 1. The name speaks for itself. The chair includes both a rocking chair, and an armchair, and a lounger. The main advantage is versatility. The disadvantage is the large dimensions, which are not always possible in an apartment. In addition, the transition from one mode to another can be accompanied by unpleasant shocks.
  • Pendulum on bearings. An upgraded version of the classic armchair. The difference lies in the fixed base and completely silent operation. As well as rocking chairs with runners of variable curvature, they are suitable for rocking small children.

Materials for the manufacture of rocking chairs are varied and sometimes surprising:

  • Metal. Perfect solution for the street due to high wear resistance, strength and resistance to adverse external conditions. However, forged rocking chairs require special equipment and skills, besides, finished products are heavy. You can consider the option of manufacturing from profile pipe, it is better if there is an ellipse in its section. To reduce the weight of the structure, and therefore reduce the moment of inertia, the seat is made of a different material.
  • From plywood. Suitable for carpenters with some experience. The main advantages of plywood are that it allows you to make precise joints, is lightweight and, due to its flexibility, is suitable for implementing non-standard ideas and solutions. The plywood product must be impregnated with any protective composition, be it acrylic varnish or polymer emulsion. In this case, the product will last longer.
  • from wood. Traditional material for the manufacture of any furniture. Affordable, natural, eco-friendly and simple. Wood has high strength characteristics, has a significant service life, and also has a pleasant appearance. However, in conditions of high humidity, the tree begins to rot. Solve this problem with the help of various paints and varnishes. Luckily, there are plenty of them for sale.
  • From a professional pipe. Immunity to moisture, pleasant color and ease of assembly contributed to its spread. plastic pipes do not require glue, are easily painted in any color, but there are also disadvantages. The main disadvantage is low strength. During operation, parts of the furniture are deformed, lose their aesthetic appearance, and sometimes break.
  • From polypropylene pipes . Affordable, lightweight and durable. The flight of design ideas will easily support a wide range of pipes presented in stores. The set of tools required for making furniture is minimal and includes a hacksaw, a marker and a tape measure. Suitable for lovers of unusual interiors.
  • From plastic bottles. The environmental movement is gaining momentum. In this vein, it is increasingly being proposed to reuse waste. Plastic bottles- not an exception. The main thing is that there are a lot of them and they look aesthetically pleasing.

Sketches of simple options

The easiest, fastest and cheap way make a rocking chair - make it from an old regular chair by attaching skis to it. We will need:

  • armchair with legs (if they are not there, you will have to do it);
  • skids;
  • screwdriver;
  • screws;
  • drill;
  • sandpaper;
  • paint and brush.

Manufacturing takes place in several steps:

  • Ski preparation. You can cut them yourself or order from a carpenter. The distance between the legs of the chair should be 20-30 cm less than the length of the runners. We drill holes in the place of attachment with legs. Try on - the skis should “sit down” on the legs. If everything went well, then you can start painting. We grind the surface of the runners with sandpaper and cover with paint. To achieve a deeper color, it is better to paint in several layers.
  • Installation of skids. We put the runners on the legs. To fix them, we drill holes for the screws in the legs of the chair, insert them and twist them. We turn over. The rocking chair is ready!

How to weave?

The highlight of the interior can be wicker furniture. It will add to the atmosphere of comfort and harmony. Advantages of wicker furniture in comparison with the usual:

  • environmental friendliness;
  • ease;
  • ease of operation;
  • the ability to withstand heavy weight;
  • beauty.

Among the disadvantages are the following: the cost and complexity of manufacturing.

For weaving, rattan and willow are most often used. Rattan is a plant from the palm family. Furniture from it tolerates moisture well, so they prefer to install it outdoors. It is eco-friendly and looks great. However, the repair of such furniture will cost a pretty penny due to the cost of the material. Willow is a cheap option. It is less flexible and unstable to moisture, like rattan, but more accessible and therefore common. Perfect for home furnishings.

A wicker chair made of willow, wicker or rattan is not so easy to make. Before starting work, it is necessary to prepare the material. The collection of vines is carried out in the cold seasons. Raw materials collected at this time are easier to process. The harvested vine is kept outdoors in a vertical position for 70-120 hours. Raw materials are sorted according to their purpose. Thick branches with a diameter of 5 cm are selected for the frame. Rods 1 cm thick will fit for the braid.

Raw materials before weaving must be processed as follows:

  • We soak the sorted rods in hot water for 10-12 hours.
  • We remove the bark.
  • We make taverns - we align the thin rods in length and cut them into 3-4 parts.
  • We stretch each shank through the press. The result should be tapes of the same length.
  • Thick branches are bent along the cylinders of the templates, fixed and allowed to dry. Templates are made according to the drawing as follows. We apply the frame drawing to the tree, attach wooden cylinders to it.
  • We are waiting for complete drying. Most often it is 3 days.

Let's start assembling the frame:

  1. We attach to the frame of the support. For reliability, we fasten them with cross strips.
  2. We install armrests and other details.
  3. We fix everything with self-tapping screws and remove the temporary mount.

The braiding of the structure occurs only on the assembled frame in the following order:

  1. We knead the shank before weaving, stretching them through any cylindrical object.
  2. Lubricate the places of the braid with glue.
  3. Weave. For structural strength, the frame should be wrapped in three rods.
  4. Inside weaving can be of different options - openwork, single.

Having finished with weaving, we install skids, supports and linings:

  1. We turn the product upside down.
  2. We heat the installed pad with a hairdryer.
  3. We install it on the ski and wrap it with tape.
  4. Remove the tape from the cooled overlays and glue them to the skid, fix with nails.
  5. After the glue has completely dried, replace the nails with self-tapping screws.

Before use, the chair must be treated with liquids that protect against fungus and wood pests, and the product must also be varnished. If it is necessary to give the chair some shade, then before varnishing it, it is worth impregnating it with drying oil or paint.

from wood

A rocking chair made of wood is perhaps the easiest and easiest option after using an old chair. Roly-poly garden benches have gained particular popularity. Their peculiarity is that they collapse 90 degrees if you lean back. The seated person will be in a supine position with their feet up to the sky. If they are pulled forward, the bench will fall into its usual position. However, the manufacture of runners for such a bench is somewhat more complicated. They will not tolerate amateurism.

For smooth and comfortable rocking, it is better to use a proven drawing and accurately transfer it to the material.

Consider the manufacture of a roly-poly bench. We will need a jigsaw or a wood saw, sandpaper or a grinder, a tape measure, a building angle, a level, a screwdriver with a set of drills, a hammer, putty, a pencil and brushes with paints. The choice of materials is important for performance finished product. We will make the side parts from plywood, and the slats from any elastic tree.

Let's get to work:

  • We cut out the side elements of plywood with a jigsaw or hacksaw. We get a semicircular base with grooves for flannels.
  • Racks are ready. They can also be made from plywood, if it is more than 30 mm thick and has sufficient flexibility.
  • Using three bars 30x50x600 mm, we connect the side parts to each other.
  • We attach the rails to the frame.
  • It remains to give the product an external gloss. Lubricate the places where the rails are attached to the sidewalls with putty to hide the recesses for the screws. We are waiting for the complete drying of the putty.
  • We cover the bench with varnish on wood and let it dry.
  • The roly-poly bench for the garden is ready.

If desired, you can make the seat soft, for this you can use foam rubber. Another solution would be a removable soft case. It will last longer, as it can be removed in bad weather.

metal

Metal rocking chairs are harder to make. This will require special equipment and knowledge. However, they are perfect for the garden due to their high strength and wear-resistant characteristics. Needless to say, your grandchildren will also be blissful in a metal rocking chair. Exist different variants manufacturing, but consider the simplest. For him, we need the following set of items:

  • steel bars and corners;
  • galvanization;
  • Bulgarian;
  • welding machine;
  • drill and drill bits for metal.

Let's get to work:

  • We study the drawing.
  • We cut out steel strips of 1 meter from a metal profile.
  • It is necessary to weld the frame and weld the rods to it, the distance between which is 1 cm.
  • We make a galvanized seat and attach it with bolts. The holes are made with a drill.
  • We grind potentially dangerous places.
  • We paint.

The main disadvantage of metal furniture is its weight. Therefore, it is worth thinking about how it can be reduced. If the metal rocking chair will be used at home, it is worth sticking a strip of rubber on the skids to protect the floor from scratches.

For a child

Memories of a homemade rocking chair will warm the soul of grown children for a long time. Making a rocking chair for a child does not have radical differences from making a regular chair. The only thing to consider is the size and proportions, as well as the presence of handles. A rocking chair for children is often made in the shape of a horse, but this is no longer furniture, but a toy. Let's consider the simplest option. Required inventory: circular and miter saws, grinder, milling cutter, jigsaw and a set of hexagons. Necessary materials: plywood 18 mm, cardboard, 2 threaded studs 50-60 cm long, 4 nuts for studs and paint. We start manufacturing with the sides. We cut them according to the drawing from plywood. We cut grooves. The thickness of the plywood determines the thickness of the groove. Drill holes.

Cut out the seat. The width is determined individually. In order for the edges of the seat to fit into the grooves, we tightly narrow them towards the edges. When cutting out the back, keep in mind that its width should be equal to the width of the back of the seat. We collect all the details and measure the resulting spacer size. When cutting, consider the size of the grooves. We process the edges with sandpaper and install the studs under the seat. We saw off the protruding studs with a grinder. We tighten the sidewalls by tightening the nuts on the studs. Let's start painting. It’s great if the child takes part in creating the design of a new piece of furniture.

Restoration

Favorite things are sometimes easier to update than to tear from the heart and just throw them away. Often they remind of long-standing family ties or pleasant events. It also happens that old furniture has not lost its remarkable properties, but its appearance leaves much to be desired. In this and other cases, restoration will help. Let's say you have a well-worn upholstered rocking chair with wooden frame. Worn wood and worn upholstery are striking. We will restore it at home. We will need: Grinder or sandpaper (the first is faster, the second is more interesting):

  • screwdriver;
  • acrylic paints;
  • new fabric for upholstery;
  • furniture foam.

The order of work is as follows:

  • First you need to disassemble the chair with a screwdriver. We clean up the screws, we still need them.
  • We remove the old layer of paint with sandpaper or a typewriter. The sandpaper should be fine-grained. In case of silt pollution, remove a larger layer.
  • Coating wooden parts acrylic paints, drying oil or varnish. Here you can use various ways painting. The effect of attrition is very popular now.

Seat replacement

We proceed to the constriction of the soft part of the chair:

  • We remove the old upholstery and soft layer.
  • We are preparing a new soft layer from a sheet of furniture foam rubber. We cut a new upholstery with allowances of 5-6 cm. From fabrics, you can choose chenille, tapestry, velveteen.

Your own garden is a great place for both work and relaxation. For a complete country rest people have come up with a variety of devices from swings to hammocks. Armchairs are a classic piece of comfortable furniture. But someone ingenious managed to make an addition to its design that made it even more convenient: a rocking chair was born. This model allows you to perfectly relax all the muscles, and unhurried and rhythmic rocking is conducive to pleasant thoughts, soothes, lulls. The rocking chair has proved so popular that since its invention, many variations and modifications have appeared. Moreover, it turned out that a do-it-yourself rocking chair made from different materials is not a myth.

To create a classic rocking chair model, you need a willow vine. Openwork and lightweight construction looks great against the backdrop of summer greenery and blends well with the interior garden house or gazebos. The disadvantage of this light and durable product is one - the fear of excess moisture.

It is not so easy to make a light and seemingly unpretentious chair from a willow vine. You need to be able to prepare the material, and the weaving technique requires special skills.

Rattan is a flexible vine that grows in South-East Asia. Wonderful and very beautiful chairs are also woven from rattan. In beauty, they are not inferior to willow, which cannot be said about durability. Neither screws nor nails are used to create rattan furniture. All connections are held only thanks to glue and skillful knitting.

Rattan as a raw material is not sold in our stores. Such a rocking chair for the owner of the cottage is a good purchase, and not a product in the manufacture of which he can show his creative abilities

If we talk about the strength and durability of the product, then this model made of forged metal can be an example of reliable furniture. An elegant lace structure will decorate any garden.

The main advantage of this model is its durability. The main one, but not the only one. Agree that this thing looks like an elegant silver jewelry

Rocking chairs are used not only as country furniture. Distinctive feature office rocking chair are its respectability and solidity.

Office workers also appreciate high-quality rocking chairs as accessories that help to fully relax from the bustle of business. Of course, office models are different from the country version.

There are also designer models high-tech rocking chairs.

Very interesting and, most importantly, quite functional model. Combines a comfortable rocking chair and a spotlight

Some super modern rocking chair designs are truly unique. Like simpler models, they guarantee their owner comfort, but, in addition, independence from energy sources. Such a product, provided solar panels, allows you to spend time with comfort and benefit.

For the base of this design, you can use thick plywood, and for its upper part - polycarbonate. Finding solar panels on the network today is also not a problem.

Master class: rocking chair for two

A double rocking chair is more like a sofa. If you put a few pillows or throw a blanket on this comfortable structure, you simply cannot find anything better for a summer vacation. We will tell you how to make such a rocking chair with your own hands.

Who said that you can only enjoy the comfort of a rocking chair alone? This model is good for two

Stage # 1 - preparing tools

Making a quality rocking chair is not as difficult as it seems. Having everything necessary tools and stocking up on quality materials, you can slowly do everything yourself. What kind of tools do we need for this work?

  • Electric jigsaw complete with wood saws.
  • Disc grinder. It will need nozzles with different grain sizes. In fact, a manual milling cutter may also be needed, but if available a large number coarse-grained sandpaper and, provided that the grinder has sufficient power, you can do without it.
  • Screwdriver with a set of drills for wood and bits.
  • A right angle with a long ruler.
  • Roulette.
  • Hammer.
  • Putty knife.
  • Brushes and pencil.

Proper organization of work assumes that all of the listed tools will be literally at hand.

Stage # 2 - draw a drawing

Any responsible work begins with the manufacture of a drawing. It is necessary in order to correctly calculate the need for materials. However, the drawing is already there. On the metric grid, the pitch of which is 100 mm, there is a template for the side of the chair. It is best to transfer the drawing to paper and cut out a pattern, with which it will be easier to draw a contour on plywood.

The drawing of an excellent rocking chair, which you can make with your skillful hands, is made on a metric grid, the pitch of which is 100 mm

Small inaccuracies are acceptable, it is important not to make a mistake in the main thing: the sidewalls must be identical, on the rolling, their lower side there should not be any protruding corners.

Stage # 3 - cutting blanks from plywood and timber

For the manufacture of tie-bars and sidewalls, europlywood is required, the thickness of which is 30 mm. The sidewalls, as already mentioned, are cut with a jigsaw strictly according to the pattern. The dimensions of each of the three sides are 800x120 mm.

Now it is necessary to cut the blanks of the bars, which will later form the surface of the seat and back of the rocking chair. To do this, you need a bar measuring 50x25 mm, from which we will cut 35 blanks of 1200 mm each. Before purchasing the material needed for this, find out what is the standard length of one such bar in your stores.

Based on the proposed drawing, you need to make a pattern, with which you should apply the contour of the sidewall of the chair to plywood

The total molding that you need, you can easily calculate yourself. Observe the multiplicity so that when cutting the workpieces there is not a large amount of residue. Let your rocking chair be a little narrower than it was originally planned. For example, with a standard length of 2.4 meters, the length of one workpiece will be 1195 mm (subtract the thickness of the cut and subsequent processing).

Fasteners are easy. Need:

  • confirmations (Euroscrews) 12 pieces, size 5x120mm;
  • self-tapping screws 140 pieces, size 4x45.

In fact, the initial part of the work is already over, but you still have to work hard to get desired result. In the process of this work, you will need drying oil, wood varnish, putty, antiseptic, which also need to be bought in advance.

Stage #4 - pre-processing parts

We proceed to sanding all the details and removing small chamfers. If your grinder is powerful enough and you know how to handle it, this procedure will not take you much time. Given that the rocking chair will be located outside, special attention must be paid to the ends of all elements in order to protect them as much as possible from dampness, to which they will undoubtedly be exposed.

Pre-treatment of parts does not only consist of sanding and chamfering. All measures must be taken to protect the end parts of the elements from decay.

The ends of the parts must be soaked with hot drying oil, and the wood fibers on them should be slightly flattened with a hammer. So moisture will be less absorbed. For the ends, the processing-varnishing-processing procedure must be carried out twice before the general assembly of the structure.

Stage # 5 - assembly of the structure

No specific standards in the manufacture of this item garden furniture not provided. The holes for the sides are marked as logic requires: the headboard, the middle part of the outer arc of the sidewall and the footboard. The tsargs will be drawn to the sidewalls with the help of confirmations. To do this, a preliminary marking is made on the sidewalls, after which the two sidewalls are combined, and a through hole is drilled in their planes with an 8 mm drill. A 5 mm drill is used for the hole in the end of the tsarg. Now you can tighten the frame of the chair with euro screws.

Holes for drawers must first be marked, after which both sidewalls are folded together and neat through holes are drilled

Now let's talk about how to drill the bars that form the seat and back of the chair. We have exactly 35 of them. It is necessary to drill 4 holes in each bar (two on each side). And these are 140 symmetrical holes.

To simplify the task, we use a “conductor” - a device for marking a large number of homogeneous parts. We make it very simply: we take a piece of the same timber, no shorter than 250 mm, we drill holes in it for the template, the diameter of which should be the same as that of a marking pencil. From the end and one of the side parts of the "conductor" we nail plywood scraps, which will serve as a limiter that does not allow you to miss during the marking process. "Conductor" is ready.

Assembly is the longest and most time-consuming part of creating a rocking chair. However, the "jig" will help you facilitate the procedure for drilling symmetrical holes.

This is what the chair looks like at the final stage of work. Of course, in this form it can not be exploited yet. Measures must be taken to protect it from the weather

The "conductor" will be used to mark holes, it is impossible to drill through it, because you can break the template holes with a drill and the parts will have to be countersinked separately. If you take a 3.5x30 drill with a countersink, it will be possible to make a hole according to the finished marking as needed.

According to the drawing, there should be a gap of 15 mm between the bars. In order to avoid distortions, it is necessary to mark on the side of the chair the distance that will correspond to six bars together with intermediate intervals, and check the matching of the template inserts in thickness. If they match, you can continue to mount. Otherwise, an adjustment should be made. A four-millimeter wood screw holds perfectly in euro plywood. But given that the fastening frequency is high, it is better to use a 3mm drill bit.

Stage # 6 - finishing the finished product

Holes above the screws must be carefully puttied. The next in line will be antiseptic treatment and a three-time coating of the product with waterproof varnish. You have to work very hard. Remember how much your work has already been invested in this chair. After all, you want it to last as long as possible? Then try!

If you have small children, you can involve them in the work of filling holes over the screws, but you will have to carefully inspect the model for damage to fix them yourself

Sliding chair without skids

You probably noticed that all the models presented above have general principle work. The trick is that these rocking chairs use curved skids as the base. How to make a rocking chair without skids? It turns out that this is also possible. Watch this video and you'll get an idea of exactly how it's done.

The personal plot is best place for rest and work. In order to have a good rest in nature, mankind has come up with many types of different devices, for example, a swing or a hammock. The best comfortable piece of furniture can be considered a chair. But one addition can be made to its design that will make it more convenient. Such a model helps to relax all the muscles of the body, and slow and monotonous rocking encourages long reflections.

The design of the rocking chair has gained immense popularity in the world. That is why, since its invention, many rocking chair options. Masters say that making a chair with your own hands is quite simple.

What rocking chairs exist for giving

To make a universal model of a rocking chair for a summer residence, a willow vine will be needed. Unique and simple design It will look great against the backdrop of a variety of greenery and go well with the decor of a gazebo or country house. The main disadvantage of such a durable and lightweight piece of furniture can be considered the fear of a large amount of moisture.

Rattan is a very flexible liana. which grows in Asian countries. This plant is also used to weave unique and beautiful rocking chairs. Their beauty is not inferior to willow products, but the strength is much worse. Fastening materials made of metal are not used in the manufacture of rattan furniture. It is customary to make connections only with the help of high-quality knitting and glue for wood.

When it comes to the service life and great strength of the rocking chair, then best example are models made from metal parts. A unique lace armchair can decorate absolutely any country cottage area. Rocking chairs should be used not only as furniture for a country house. The main advantage of the product for office work is considered to be its solidity and representativeness. Now there are models of rocking chairs from famous designers, which are made in various modern styles.

Many modern designs of these pieces of furniture have special uniqueness. Together with conventional models of rocking chairs, they can guarantee their owner great comfort and independence from conventional energy sources. A similar piece of furniture, which is equipped with small solar panels, makes it possible to spend free time with benefit and comfort.

How to make a rocking chair with your own hands

The armchair in its design has much in common with the sofa. When a lot of pillows are placed on such a piece of furniture or a blanket is thrown over it, it is impossible to find anything better for relaxing in country house. Next, the process of assembling a rocking chair from plywood with your own hands will be described in detail.

DIY rocking chair tools

Making a unique rocking chair is quite simple. By purchasing good materials and having the right tools, you can assemble this piece of furniture yourself in a small amount of time. To assemble a rocking chair you will need the following tools:

A good organization of the assembly process assumes that absolutely all the necessary tools will be located near the workplace.

DIY rocking chair: drawings

Every responsible work must begin with detailed drawing, which is needed in order not to make a mistake in the required amount building materials. And also a high-quality drawing can be easily found on the net. On a special metric grid with a step of no more than 10 centimeters, there is a template for the side parts of the rocking chair. The best option would be to transfer the drawing to a large sheet of paper and make a pattern, with which it will be convenient to transfer the outline of the product to plywood.

In this work, small inaccuracies can be tolerated. But all sidewalls must necessarily be the same. There should be no protruding corners on the lower rolling side of the rocking chair.

Making blanks for a rocking chair made of wood

To make special tsargovy screeds and sidewalls, plywood of the highest class with a thickness of at least 3 centimeters will be needed. The side elements should be cut with an electric jigsaw according to the pattern made. Three tsars should have a size of 810 by 125 millimeters.

Next, it is worth cutting blanks from wooden bars, which in the future will make up the surface of the back and seat of a unique chair. For this purpose, a wooden beam with dimensions of 50 by 25 millimeters is well suited. From it you need to cut 36 blanks of 1250 millimeters. Before buying the material you need for work, you should find out what is the standard length wooden beam at your nearest hardware store.

The total length of the beam, which is needed for the manufacture of the product, is quite simply calculated on the calculator. It is necessary to observe the multiplicity so that when cutting the workpieces, a small amount of the remaining material remains. In this case, the best solution would be to reduce the size of the rocking chair. For example, if the standard length of a wooden beam is 2.5 meters, then one workpiece will be 1240 millimeters, because it is necessary to subtract the thickness of the cut and further processing.

With fasteners, everything is much easier. To make a wooden rocking chair you will need:

  • 14 special confirmations measuring 5 by 125 millimeters;
  • 150 wood screws 4 x 50 mm.

Thus, preparatory stage can be considered completed. However, it will still be necessary to work hard to make a unique rocking chair. Additionally, you may need the following materials:

  • high-quality drying oil;
  • varnish for wood;
  • liquid putty;
  • antiseptic against a variety of pests.

Processing the details of the future rocking chair

Next, you can start sanding the manufactured elements of the chair and removing small chamfers from them. When the grinder has great power and there is experience with it, then such a process does not take much time. Considering that the furniture will often be in the open air, it is worth pay great attention to the ends of the parts to ensure their protection from moisture, which will constantly affect them.

All ends of the blanks must be well saturated with hot drying oil, and the longitudinal fibers of the wood on them should be slightly flattened with a hammer. Thus, moisture will not cause much harm to the rocking chair. This procedure for the ends of the product must be carried out several times.

Assembling a homemade chair

This type of country furniture does not have certain standards and assembly rules. Special holes for the drawers should be marked so that it is convenient to assemble the rocking chair. Essential elements comfortable chair such:

  • headboard;
  • outer arc;
  • sidewalls;
  • foot.

Special drawers fastened to the sidewalls with euro screws. To do this job, you need to make high-quality markings on the sidewalls, and then combine the two sidewalls. Further, in their planes it is worth drilling a through hole with a wood drill with a diameter of 8 millimeters. To make holes in the end of the tsarg, it is necessary to use a wood drill with a diameter of 6 millimeters. Now you need to pull the frame of the product with the help of confirmations.

Next, you need to make holes in the wooden blocks that will form the back and seat of the rocking chair. There should be 35 blanks. It is necessary to make 4 through holes in each bar. As a result, it should get 140 identical holes. To simplify this work, it is worth using a special conductor. This is the name of a device for marking a large number of identical products.

Making it is pretty easy. A small piece of wooden beam is taken, but not less than 300 millimeters long. It is necessary to drill through holes for the template in it, the diameter of which must correspond to the size of the construction pencil for marking. From the end and side of such a device, you need to nail small pieces of plywood, which will act as a limiter. This will prevent you from making mistakes when marking holes.

Such a conductor can be used to mark through holes, but it is absolutely impossible to drill through it, since the template holes will be broken with a drill and the workpieces will have to be re-marked. However, you can use a 4 x 35 mm wood drill with a countersink. In this case, it is possible to make a through hole of the size you need in the marked part.

There must be a gap between the wooden blocks at least 17 millimeters. To avoid distortions, it is necessary to mark on the sidewalls of the product a distance corresponding to 6 bars together with the necessary intervals, and additionally check the matching of the templates in size. When they completely match, then you can continue to assemble the rocking chair. If the sizes do not match, it is worth making adjustments to the blanks. A modern self-tapping screw for wood fixes euro plywood well. However, if we take into account the fact that the fastening frequency is very large, then it is necessary to use a wood drill with a diameter of 3 mm.

Rocking chair finishing

It is necessary to carefully putty holes from self-tapping screws. Further, it is necessary to treat the product with a special antiseptic and cover it several times with waterproof varnish. This work should be done very carefully and carefully. After thorough drying of the rocking chair, you can begin to use it.

How to make a metal rocking chair yourself: drawings

Metal is pretty difficult to process material. When there is no experience in forging or specific equipment for the production of bent products, then for self assembly will only be available simple armchairs rocking chairs. However, their design can be quite interesting. First, a product frame is assembled from a metal corner or profile.

Further, all blanks must be treated with an anti-corrosion compound. Hammer paints are very popular now. The decoration decor depends on the preferences of the master. For example, the seat can be made of wooden planks or covered with a soft cloth. To decorate a rocking chair, it is worth making small pillows for the back and seat, and on top cover everything with a large removable cover. Sometimes a metal frame is braided with a large amount of willow vines. For this work, theoretical skills in wicker weaving will be required, which are worth learning from the numerous videos on the net.

The rocking chair is rightfully one of the most popular pieces of furniture. She gains even more popularity when there is country house. It can be different models made from different materials. But preference is given wooden products. You can buy ready-made, or you can make it yourself. How to make a rocking chair with your own hands and what materials to give preference to, read further in the article.

Advantages and disadvantages of wooden structures

Wood is the most common material for making furniture. The wooden rocking chair is no exception, thanks to its many benefits:

  • Environmentally friendly material that emits a pleasant forest smell.
  • Significant strength.
  • Long period of operation.
  • The possibility of implementing design solutions.
  • Ease of processing, including manual.
  • A wide choice of wood of any brand and in any place.
  • Large color spectrum of the material.

The finished rocking chair fits well into any architectural ensemble of the building. It can be installed at any time in a convenient place: in a clearing, by the pool, by the fireplace, near the barbecue, etc. Rocking in a chair is relaxing, comfortable for the body, and beneficial to the body. It is a comfortable and safe swing for children.

Along with numerous advantages, there are a number of disadvantages, the main of which is the significant cost of any rocking chair. In addition, structures are characterized by the loss of their qualities and characteristics if it is affected by rain, fog, and other precipitation. Undesirable will be a long stay of a rocking chair under the influence of the sun.

Material and its characteristics

For the manufacture of rocking chairs from solid wood, softwoods are preferably selected. It can be pine, spruce, alder or larch. These rocks are characterized by low mass and low density. Homemade designs with a significant mass will be inconvenient to move. The high density of the material will create difficulties in work.

Coniferous trees have a light gray structure. Easily processed. A significant disadvantage of such wood is that with an increase in the level of humidity, it increases in size. Despite this, conifers are budget option, are widely distributed in the trading network and have a low cost.

The chair can be made from more expensive types of wood. It can be oak, ash or beech. These types of wood have almost no pores, resulting in high level strength. Finished structures reliable and durable, but have a high cost. tree species are light or light yellow in color.

For the manufacture of a chair that sways, high-quality wooden blanks of the first grade are used. The humidity of these blanks by the beginning of work should not exceed 10%. If this figure is higher, then wood is not recommended. It is better to let it dry, as a structure made of wet wood will subsequently dry out and undergo deformation. The consequence will be its nondescript appearance or complete destruction.

Blueprints

For the manufacture of a wooden swinging structure, it is necessary to draw up a drawing of the chair. It is better to do it on graph paper, drawing all the structural elements with dimensions. To make a simple rocking chair with your own hands from wood, it is recommended to take an ordinary chair as a basis.

Drawing of a rocking chair made of wood

The simplicity of the design lies in the fact that all elements are attached at right angles and there is no need to cut additional details. The basis for the whole structure is the size of the seat and the height of the legs. Under these dimensions, connecting elements will be cut. The next step in the manufacture of rocking chairs, according to the drawing and the required dimensions, we cut wood parts.

A square seat with a side length of 53-56 cm can be made of plywood or a solid piece of wood. The thickness of the seat should be 1.0-1.5 cm. For the rear and front legs, a bar with a section of 4.5x4.5 cm is used. The rear legs are cut with a height of 105-110 cm, the front ones - 55-60 cm. length, height and thickness 57x4x1.5 cm, respectively.

This design and dimensions are not a dogma. Based on preferences, the shape and size of parts may vary.

Tool

Making a chair requires a tool. To complete the work you will need:

  • fine-toothed wood saw or electric jigsaw for cutting blanks;
  • simple or electric planer for processing construction details;
  • grinding or belt machine for grinding parts;
  • manual milling machine for grooving and processing connecting rails;
  • right angle or building plumb;
  • screwdriver;
  • hammer;
  • tape measure and pencil;
  • clamp or rubber band;
  • brush or spatula to fill the mounting holes.

Given that the structural elements will not be attached to nails, a hammer will be needed to fit the parts to each other.

Connection of parts

To attach the seat and legs to each other, you can use two options:

  1. spike fastening;
  2. connection with glue.

When fastened to a spike on wooden elements rocking chairs are marked. According to it, grooves are cut out in the legs, 2.0x1.5 cm in size, 2 cm deep. The shape of the connecting rails is prepared for the grooves. Before fastening the parts, the groove and ends of the rails are treated with building glue.

Users often search:

In the second version, the attachment points are treated with glue and interconnected. For reliability, epoxy glue is often used. The joints are reinforced with self-tapping screws. The seat is mounted on transverse rails and is also fixed with self-tapping screws.

In both versions, a clamp and gaskets are used to finally fasten all elements of a rocking chair made of wood. The gasket material is installed between the clamp and the rocking chair. After installation, the clamp is tightened and the swinging chair is left for 24 hours for the glue to completely harden. In the absence of a clamp, the screed is carried out using a hard rubber band.

Mounting skids

The manufacture and installation of skids can be done in two ways.

First way

Differs in simplicity and speed of execution. It is as follows:

  • For the manufacture of skids, a sheet of plywood, 1.5 cm thick, is used.
  • According to the template, two blanks of the same curvature are cut out of plywood, about 1 m long.
  • Slots are made in the legs of the chair, 1.5 cm wide under the thickness of the plywood skids. The depth of the slots can be 7-10 cm.
  • The runners are ground along the edge and installed in the slot. During installation, it is necessary to achieve the most uniform level of their installation.
  • At the landing sites of the skids, a through hole is made, with a diameter of 2 cm.
  • The hole is treated with glue and a wooden spike is inserted into it.

Second way

More labor intensive. A block of wood is used as a ski. To equip a rocking chair with skis, you must:

  1. In a wooden bar, with a section of 4.5x4.5 cm and a length of about 1 meter, cut grooves.
  2. Process the ends of the legs of the chairs for landing in the grooves of the runners.
  3. Place the skid bars in boiling water or hot water until the wood becomes pliable.
  4. Using a tool, bend the skis to a certain radius and leave in this state until completely dry.
  5. Install the dried runners on the legs, pre-treating the grooves with glue.

In order for the runners to serve for a long time, it is necessary to use wood with high wear resistance.

Balance check

Rocking chair made of wood, can cause inconvenience when landing or getting up. This arises as a result of the difference in the weight of the structural elements that are in its front and rear parts. To avoid discomfort, it is necessary to balance the swinging structure.

With a significant inclination of the structure forward, cross bars can be mounted on the skids behind the back. If necessary, the weight on the slats can be increased by installing decorative elements.

Balanced Rocking Chair

When tilting back, the same counterweight must be equipped in front of the rocking chair. It could be additional shelf for legs. If this weight is not enough, then you can equip a niche under the shelf for an additional counterweight.

Treatment

The finished structure will be used in different places at different temperatures. Operation in winter and summer, under the sun and in the cold, indoors and outdoors can lead to rapid aging of the tree and various diseases. This will save the processing of the material.

Before assembling the structure, the tree can be stained. Due to its concentration, the rocking chair can take on any shade.

Armchair varnished in 3 layers

To prevent diseases, the tree must be covered with a special antifungal liquid, as well as an agent against wood insects and pests.

To protect the wood from getting wet, it is recommended to treat it with a special water-repellent liquid.

Users often search:

At the end, the entire structure must be coated with two layers of varnish.

Conclusion

The presented version of the manufacture of a rocking chair is the simplest and fastest. If you follow the rules and technology of work, you can make a chair of any complexity and design.

The finished chair will serve not only as a piece of furniture, but also as a separate design element that will always attract everyone's attention.
